<p>Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are widely used in a variety of applications. The static eccentricity of the rotor is a common fault in the fabrication process. These faults cause imbalanced electromagnetic force and exert unexpected vibration and acoustic noise during the design process. In the worst case, it causes bearing or motor failure. This research investigates the impact of this fault on the temporal and spatial harmonic distribution of gap flux density and electromagnetic force. Moreover, a compensation method has been proposed to suppress imbalanced force due to static eccentricity by using a triple three-phase winding motor. By controlling the three inverters independently, the winding current of each group can be controlled. Therefore, the gap flux density and electromagnetic force in each group can be brought into a desired state. Therefore, the imbalanced electromagnetic force can be restored using this system. In this paper, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and experiment.</p>

<p>In recent years, progress in power semiconductor switching devices has created more additional advantages that can be realized using multi-phase inverter-fed motors. The authors propose a MATRIX motor to realize electric motors with higher functionalities than conventional electric motors. Since the MATRIX motor is driven by H-bride inverters connected with each phase winding, it has a high degree of freedom in control. Moreover, these inverters can change their connections to different phase coils to realize a wide operating range. The voltage equation of each mode can be expressed using the transformation matrix when the winding connection is changed. Therefore, we call the proposed motor MATRIX motor. In addition, since motors are being applied to various applications that operate within proximity of people, further quietness of the motor is required. In this paper, we propose a method to suppress vibration caused by a specific harmonic order radial direction electromagnetic force via teeth flux density control using the MATRIX motor. The specific order radial force and vibration are suppressed by utilizing two features of the MATRIX motor. One is a high degree of freedom of current control owing to multi-phase drive and the other is local flux density observation. The effectiveness of the proposed method was clarified using experimental results.</p>

<p>In this study, an effective combination of methods to estimate the magnet operating points in a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is proposed. First, the magnet temperature estimation is compensated with the initial temperature and magnet loss based on the error between the estimated temperature obtained using the thermal equivalent circuit and the estimated temperature obtained using the flux observer. In addition, stator loss is compensated based on the error between the measured temperature and estimated temperature obtained using the thermal equivalent circuit. Then, the flux linkage observer is compensated with the d/q inductance value using the magnetic equivalent circuit. A method of estimating the magnetic flux density of a permanent magnet is designed to estimate the magnetic flux density of the motor using a magnetic equivalent circuit reflecting the value of the measured magnet temperature and magnetic flux density in the permanent magnet's B-H curve. Unlike the rotor temperature, the stator temperature can be easily measured, and the magnet operating point estimation can be designed as a more accurate and error-resistant estimation method. Furthermore, simulation and experimental verification demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.</p>

<jats:p>This paper presents some techniques for driving novel 5 phase dual winding PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) for the in-wheel motor. The motor realizes winding change over characteristics that can expand driving area from high-torque mode to high-speed mode due to the dual winding construction. However, the dual winding structure makes a high-current ripple due to high coupling between windings. The paper proposes some control methods to reduce the current ripple, including inverter career ripple. The paper also presents harmonics current injection, such as the 3rd harmonics current injection method, to reduce the torque ripple and generate higher torque.</jats:p>

In recent years, multi-phase inverter-fed motors that realize additional advantages have been actively studied because of developments of power semiconductor switching devices. The authors also have proposed a MATRIX motor driven by H-bride inverters connected with each phase winding individually for the purpose of realizing electric motors with high functionalities. In addition, since motors are being applied to various applications that is close to people, further quietness of motor is required. In this paper, a method is proposed that 2(nd) order radial direction electromagnetic force can be suppressed by teeth flux density control in the MATRIX motor. By utilizing high degree of freedom of current control owe to multi-phase drive and local flux density observation capability of the MATRIX motor, the 2(nd) order radial force on each tooth and vibration are suppressed. The effectiveness of the proposed method was clarified by simulation results.

It is believed that further popularization of highly efficient PMSM in recent years can contribute to energy consumption reduction. Therefore, further development of electric motor technology is required. The control method that can deal with nonlinear elements is proposed by performing control using RT-simulation. However, the conventional RT-simulation based control can not cope with changes in motor parameters. To solve this problem, We propose to make the motor model which can respond with the change of motor parameters by using machine learning algorithm.

<p>Rotor position and speed in sensorless control based on back-electromotive force (back-EMF) estimation can be estimated from back-EMF estimator and rotor position estimator in an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). Even if the rotor position and speed are correctly estimated by these estimators in the steady state, the performance of estimators in the transient state may be degraded by the gain design of estimators. This paper describes the design method of estimators and current controller to ensure stable sensorless control of IPMSM not only in the steady state but also in the transient state such as for torque or speed variation. The performance of our proposed method is verified through a simulation and experimental results.</p>

<p>This paper discusses a magnetization state (MS) manipulation method at high speeds with low vehicle vibration for variable flux permanent magnet synchronous machines (VF-PMSMs). VF-PMSMs can achieve lower driving cycle losses compared to conventional PMSMs by changing the MS in the medium speed and medium torque range. To maximize this advantage for reducing driving cycle losses, the MS manipulation capability in this range, which requires higher voltage to change MS than that required in the low speed range, is critical. However, the capability has not been researched very well. In this paper, a MS manipulating method using a straight line stationary flux linkage trajectory (SLλ<sup>s</sup>T) is investigated and evaluated. This method uses a straight line flux linkage trajectory in the stationary frame so that the DC bus voltage utilization is maximized while the flux linkage achieves the desired magnetizing point without demagnetization. This method was experimentally evaluated with EV-scale VF-PMSMs, and it was found to achieve full magnetization at a speed almost two times higher than the base speed. The effect of this method on vehicle vibration was studied via simulation using the experimental result and a simple vehicle model that emulates a vehicle powertrain for traction applications.</p>

<p>This paper describes the high efficiency capability of multi-phase inverter-fed permanent magnet synchronous motors. In this type of motor, each armature winding is connected with an independent H-bridge inverter. The type of construction achieves a wide range of operation and high efficiency driving. Firstly, it is confirmed that the motor can expand the operating range by using winding reconfiguration. The inverter configurations are capable of changing their connections to different coil groups in the armature winding. To achieve high efficiency driving, a large torque production method and iron loss suppression method are proposed. With the proposed method of construction of the motor drive, the flux waveform in each stator tooth can observe and control in spite of the full-pitch distributed winding. The combination of controllable flux and arbitrary current excitation can generate a large output torque and reduce the iron loss. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method can significantly reduce the total loss.</p>

<p>This paper proposes the harmonic current control of a permanent magnet synchronous machine using complex vector form PI controllers. The complex vector form PI controllers are designed based on voltage equations written in complex vector notation in multiple reference frames that synchronize with the harmonic current. Thus, a decoupling control in each reference frame can be achieved that has been difficult to realize in the past. The proposed method improves the transient response of the harmonic current control by realizing the decoupling control in each reference frame. Moreover, the proposed harmonic current control method can be designed and implemented easily because the PI gain design method for all harmonic orders is the traditional pole-zero cancellation method, which is well known. This paper presents the transient response and parameter sensitivity of the proposed harmonic current control that were obtained from the results of the simulation and experiment conducted, which reveal the effectiveness of the proposed method.</p>

<p>This study describes a Variable Leakage Flux type Interior Permanent Magnet synchronous motor (VLF-IPM) for an automobile traction motor. The proposed VLF-IPM can control the leakage flux in the rotor core depending on the armature reaction. As the motor can suppress <i>d</i>-axis current to reduce the back-EMF, the motor improves not only the motor efficiency but also the inverter efficiency in the high speed area. It is experimentally confirmed that the VLF-IPM can achieve the high efficiency driving in the wide speed range.</p>

<p>This study proposes advanced torque control of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) using a finite element analysis (FEA) based motor model with a real-time simulator. This model can simulate the behavior of an actual motor including nonlinear characteristics such as spatial harmonics and magnet saturations. Therefore, model-based control with an FEA based motor model is advantageous for motor control. This study aims to achieve advanced motor control and drive techniques. In this study, high performance torque control techniques for PMSMs are proposed. The proposed torque control is developed based on direct torque control with torque prediction. This method can achieve fast response and smooth torque production. Its effectiveness is verified through simulations and experiments.</p>

This paper presents advanced torque and current control techniques for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) with a real-time simulator which has a nonlinear motor model. This model is called "Behavior motor model", and it is developed based on finite element analysis results considering non-linear characteristics that include spatial harmonics and magnetic saturation. The real-time simulator is implemented within a circuit simulator that couples the behavior motor model with switching circuits in real-time, and it can be applied to torque and current control as an advanced controller. In this paper, the torque and current control of a PMSM with the proposed system is presented. Effectiveness of this technique is verified by performing simulations and experiments.

<p>In this paper, a design of an axial type switched reluctance motor (SRM) is presented that considers the magnetic characteristics of soft magnetic composite (SMC) material. These characteristics are changed by the press and cutting processes for producing the motor core. It is shown that the magnetic characteristics of the vertical and the parallel flux direction differ according to the direction of the press, and are degraded by the cutting process. The proposed design method can be accurately simulated by using the magnetic characteristics in both the vertical and the parallel flux direction in an axial SRM motor.</p>

Interior type permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) have been widely used for various applications because of their high efficiency and high power density. It is well known that the flux weakening control of an IPMSM can extend the operating range by reducing the back-EMF and producing reluctance torque. An IPMSM, however, experiences a large harmonic iron loss in the stator teeth caused by the distorted flux density. In particular, the harmonic eddy current loss significantly increases in the high speed region under flux weakening control. This paper describes a novel motor-drive system that includes an individual multi-phase drive in order to control the current and voltage in each armature winding. The proposed system can be expected to achieve high efficiency driving, a wide operating range, fail-safety and so on. Furthermore, the proposed method gives the distorted flux density distribution a sinusoidal waveform, because the individual control can observe and regulate the instantaneous flux linkage in each stator tooth, although the motor consists of a full-pitch distributed winding. Therefore, the proposed drive can suppress the harmonic iron loss under the flux weakening operation. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve an extensive reduction in the total iron loss in particular in the high speed region.

However, vehicles with the internal combustion engine will continue to retain a large market share in the near future. This report presents recent technology trends in fuel economy for electrical and conventional vehicles.

This paper describes variable magnetization machines, which are capable of varying the magnetization state of permanent magnets during operation. A pulse current on the stator windings creates a magnetic field on the rotor; this can be used to manipulate the magnetization state of the rotor magnets. Regulating the magnetization state according to the machine operating condition can reduce machine losses. A proof-of-principle machine was designed and fabricated. A series of experiments was conducted to evaluate the torque-speed envelope and efficiency contours of the fabricated machine. A full-scale machine was then designed with a modified magnetic circuit for application to an electric vehicle and evaluated using finite element analysis. A control strategy for the magnetization state during machine operation is proposed, and the losses during a driving cycle with the strategy were evaluated.

This paper presents the analysis and PCB design of a class D inverter for wireless power transfer systems operating at 13.56MHz. The effects of parasitic inductance on the switching performance of MOSFETs, transfer efficiency of WPT systems, and power loss are analyzed. At high frequencies, the print circuit board (PCB) design is very critical because it control the parasitic elements on the circuit. This study proposes an improved PCB design that can provide a 23.4% decrease in parasitic inductance over the conventional PCB design.

This paper presents a novel single-phase switched reluctance motor (SRM) that can be directly driven by a commercial AC power supply without any switching circuit and sensor. This proposed SRM is optimized based on a simple design technique. The optimized machine has higher motor efficiency compared with conventional induction motors. In addition, the novel SRM can start-up with direct commercial AC power supply. In this paper, the performance of the prototype single-phase SRM is verified through simulations and experiments.

This paper proposes controlled voltage source (CVS) vector control for switched reluctance motors (SRMs) using the PWM method. This proposed technique can achieve high controllability for variable speed drives, low current ripple and low noise operation, and high motor efficiency at high speed. Moreover, its implementation is easy because the controller design does not require complicated offline data such as the magnetization characteristics. To verify the effectiveness, an experiment was conducted to compare the performances of the proposed technique and a conventional unipolar drive using the hysteresis comparator method.

This paper proposes vector control specialized for a switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive. Because it is a unipolar drive, a sinusoidal current with a DC offset is applied to each circuit instead of the conventional trapezoidal current. The current consists of DC and AC components which can be identified by their generation of a (virtual) rotor flux and rotating stator magnetic field, respectively. Thus, the vector control system can be developed in the same way as conventional AC machines. The proposed technique provides new mathematical models of SRMs on a rotating reference frame and achieves precise and fast torque response and advanced operations such as linear torque-current control and maximum torque per ampere control. The vector control theory was verified through simulations and experiments.

This paper describes some characteristics of a compound magnetomotive forces (CMMF) motor employing a dual winding (DW) method. The CMMF motor can utilize three kinds of characteristics because of a special magnet arrangement. A 4-12 pole CMMF motor with changeable electric and magnetic characteristics had already been proposed in the previous study. The CMMF motor, however, has a problem in its driving range because of voltage interference. In this study, the DW method is proposed to solve this problem by utilizing magnet pole combinations and the winding distribution. This paper shows that the proposed motor can achieve multiple high-efficiency points by utilizing the parameter distribution for two kinds of magnet characteristics.

This paper describes permanent magnet synchronous motors by having the characteristics of a bonded magnet. In general, most PMSMs use a Nd-Fe-B sintered magnet. Because the Nd-Fe-B sintered magnet has a high magnetic energy, it is possible to obtain high torque and high output power. On the other hand, the magnetic energy of the bonded magnet is lower than that of the Nd-Fe-B sintered magnet. However, this magnet has a higher permeability than the Nd-Fe-B sintered magnet and the eddy current is negligible. It is found that flux weakening control is useful because of the high permeability. This paper presents experimental results that verify the usability of the bonded magnet machines.

This paper describes an approach to achieve a high efficiency drive such a brushless AC (BLAC) drive by a Brushless DC (BLDC) drive. BLDC motors with an excited rectangular voltage for 120 electrical degrees per cycle are commonly used for low-cost applications of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). This drive method yields low-order harmonic components in the current waveform. These harmonic components cause mechanical vibration and electrical losses. Therefore, a BLDC drive is not applicable to a sinusoidal back-EMF machine. However, with regard to the high-frequency loss caused by a pulse width modulation (PWM) carrier and a switching loss, the BLDC drive has the potential to achieve higher efficiency than the BLAC drive. This paper compares the overall efficiency, which includes the PWM carrier frequency loss, by using a coupling analysis between a finite element analysis (FEA) and a circuit simulator. Two surface-mounted PMSMs (SPMSMs) are tested. One has a sinusoidal back-EMF waveform (BLAC machine), and the other has a trapezoidal back-EMF waveform (BLDC machine). Both the driving methods of the BLDC drive and the BLAC drive are adapted to each machine and their efficiencies are compared by both simulations and experiments. The results show that the BLDC machine with a BLDC drive has higher efficiency than the BLAC machine with a BLAC drive.

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) have been used in high-performance applications owing to their high efficiency and high power density. In particular, an integrated system of a PMSM and power electronics equipment is attractive for high power density applications because the integrated system is lighter and smaller than the conventional separated system.<br>In this paper, the concept of a new integrated machine named the MATRIX motor is proposed. This motor consists of not only an integrated inverter but also, multi-layer windings and additional switches. These winding connections can be changed arbitrarily on the basis of a matrix. Through winding configurations, variable parameters such as turn number and winding factor can be determined, and the connection method can be changed between series and parallel arrangements. These variable parameters can change motor characteristics such as the maximum output torque, base speed, and operating region.<br>This paper describes the characteristics of a prototype model of the MATRIX motor. The characteristics of the winding rearrangement and its variable machine parameters are analyzed and verified through experiments. In addition, the online winding reconfiguration method is proposed and experimentally verified.

The high-flux permanent magnet and flux-barrier structure of permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) has strong magnetic saturation and harmonics components. When control algorithms for such machines are examined by performing control simulation, the use of the conventional motor model based on the voltage equation can cause problems. To avoid these problems, we introduce the technique of coupled analysis of the magnetic-field-control/circuit simulation. Further, iron losses generated in PMSM can be estimated by the coupled analysis system. The iron losses at various driving conditions are calculated by the coupled analysis system and are compared with measured losses. The comparison results show that the coupled analysis system is suitable for accurately estimating the iron losses of PMSM.

This study presents a new method for torque ripple control in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). The proposed method is based on instantaneous torque estimation with a mathematical model. The model provides a new expression for the torque and requires a small amount of off-line data and the values of some machine parameters. With the new mathematical model, torque ripple control is possible at low cost with existing platforms. In the proposed method, the torque ripple is suppressed by feedforward (FF) control and feedback (FB) control. The FF control can compensate for drawbacks in the FB control based on the new model. Therefore, the proposed method for torque ripple control is effective under various conditions. In this paper, the proposed method is evaluated by performing both simulations and experiments.

The permanent magnet synchronous motor offers the possibility of obtaining higher efficiency in a smaller motor size. However, it is difficult to vary the range of high motor efficiency because of its constant magnetomotive force (MMF) level. This paper proposes a variable characteristic motor that embodies a new concept of the compound magnetomotive forces (CMMF) motor. The motor uses a special magnet arrangement that has the MMF of components with different number of pole pairs. The application of compound current control to this motor makes it possible to vary the motor speed and torque (N-T) characteristics. This paper describes the derivation of the theoretical equations for this CMMF motor. It also presents the results of FEA and experiments conducted with the prototype motor to demonstrate the validity of the CMMF concept.

We propose the control/circuit simulation system using motor model with magnetid saturation characterisitcs and harmonics created by electromagnetic filed simulator. That motor model has the inductance, magnetic flux and torque information of each motor which include the spatial harmonic components and effect by magnetic saturation. And we made the Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) for estimation of that motor model and compared current, voltage, iron loss results given by the simulation with the experimented values.

In the speed sensorless control of the induction motor, the machine parameters (especially the rotor resistance <i>R</i><sub>2</sub>) have a strong influence to the speed estimation. In addition, the output voltage error due to the dead time and the voltage drop of the inverter influence on the rotor flux estimation, but the simultaneous compensation of the output voltage and the stator resistance <i>R</i><sub>1</sub> is very difficult. In this paper the new algorithm of <i>R</i><sub>2</sub> estimation with utilizing only stator current is proposed. In the high frequency range, the <i>R</i><sub>2</sub> is estimated in the transient state, and in the very low frequency range, <i>R</i><sub>2</sub> is estimated in proportion to the estimated <i>R</i><sub>1</sub> when the ideal voltage source by the power op-amp is used instead of the voltage source inverter to avoid the output voltage error. In use of these algorithms, the low speed estimation was possible and the zero speed control was achieved under the 5_??_40% load condition in two motors. This paper clarified that the zero speed estimation is possible with the stator and rotor resistance estimations when the output voltage is ideal.

In the speed sensorless control of the induction motor, the machine parameters (especially the secondary resistance <i>R</i><sub>2</sub>) have a strong influence to the speed estimation. It is known that the simultaneous estimation of the speed and <i>R</i><sub>2</sub> is impossible in the slip frequency type vector control, because the secondary flux is constant. But the secondary flux is not always constant in the speed transient state. In this paper the <i>R</i><sub>2</sub> estimation in the transient state without adding any additional signal to the stator current is proposed. This algorithm uses the least mean square algorithm and the adaptive algorithm, and it is possible to estimate the <i>R</i><sub>2</sub> exactly. This algorithm is verified by the digital simulations and the experiments.
