Cells with solid oxide electrolyte can be applied for a hydrogen generator, namely Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells SOECs (SOECs) In this study, we carried out the cycle analysis foi SOEC systems following two steps Firstly, SOEC system models with H2 production capacity of 300 Nm3/h were constructed Secondly, system efficiency was calculated based on heat and mass balance from a viewpoint of "exergy" We treated two cases of SOEC systems which have different operating temperatures, 850°C and 650℃ As a result, several factors which decide property of exergy efficiency were obtained. At load rate with endothermic reaction, the balance of temperature of heat source and stack performance is primary factor for exergy efficiency On the other side, the heat loss is more important factor at load rate with exothermic reaction Therefore it is important to select the suitable system considering the operating conditions such as load range of SOEC systems

In order to understand water behavior inside polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC), we measured temperature distribution in the cell because the water behavior is impacted largely local temperature. We developed Au-Ni thin film thermocouples fabricated on parylene (poly-para-xylene) layer for measuring the internal temperature distribution of PEFC. This thermocouple was fabricated using micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS) technology. Sputtering technique was employed to deposit a 1pm thick layer of Au-Ni thin film thermocouples on 2p.m thick parylene. Parylene was deposited on 4-inch silicon wafer. Then, the Au-Ni thin film thermocouples were covered with a 2pm parylene layer using deposition apparatus to protect them from environmental degradation. Fabricated thin film thermocouples embedded between the MEA (Membrane Electrode Assembly) and the GDL (Gas Diffusion Layer). The measurement result showed that temperature at cathode catalyst layer was higher than that anode catalyst layer. Insulation of thin film thermocouples has done well. It is necessary to optimize the thermocouples for precise measurement. In order to accurately measure the temperature, it is necessary to optimize the device.

Polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) are comparatively efficient, environmental friendly, and scalable energy converts suitable to a wide range of applications. Heat transport in PEFCs is the important factor to improve PEFCs performance. Especially, heat transport characteristics of gas diffusion layers (GDLs) have strong influence on PEFCs performance. In PEFCs, GDL is contacted separator that has gas channels, which causes a pressure distribution in GDL. Therefore, inner structure of GDL and condition of contact between GDL and separator might be changed. So, teat transport characteristics of GDL will change. Even when liquid water is in GDL, its heat transport characteristics will be change. However, they haven't investigated clearly, yet. In this study, we measured thermal conductivities and thermal resistances of GDLs in the through-plane direction using steady state method, and effects of gas channel geometry and inside water distribution are discussed. We found that contact condition between GDL and separator didn't change GDL-separator thermal contact resistance per unit contact area. And when there is water retention in GDL, we found that water distribution and degree of water content inside GDL influences the thermal conductivity of GDL and GDL-separator thermal contact resistance.

Polymer Electrolyte Fuel cell (PEFC) gained wider interest as a clean and efficient energy conversion device. Proper water management is needed, because vapor and liquid transport effects strongly on PEFC power generation characteristics and efficiency. However, water transport factors have not been well understood especially during unsteady operation, which is often observed in uses of vehicles or distributed stationary power generators. In this paper, to grasp and generalized effects of the local water transport on the PEFC performance, we have developed unsteady numerical model considering water transports and compared its calculated results with experimental responses to verify the model adequacy and discuss water transport factors. In the numerical model, mass conservation equations and charge conservation equations in gas channel, GDL and MEA were solved. As necessary parameters for developing them, we measured membrane resistivity, activation over-voltage etc by ourselves. The membrane resistivity increases extremely as relative humidity decrease, and activation over-voltage is also affected by relative humidity, not only by current density and oxygen activity. The measured and calculated transient responses were agreed well in most operating conditions, then adequacy of our measurement methods of water transport properties and numerical model have been confirmed. Then, we have discussed the effects of transport resistance at MEA surfaces on PEFC transient power generation.

Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) is expected to be used in many fields as future power sources. Polymer electrolyte membrane, which is inserted in PEFC as a electrolyte, has proton conductivity that depends on its water content. It is important for improving the cell performance to keep suitable wet condition within the cell and grasp water concentration, diistribution, and its effect. It is said that the voltage response of PEFC is effected by condensed water, so in this study, we predicted the voltage response at the conditions with/without condensed water, and compared the results with experimental data. Both numerical and experimental results had relatively good agreement, and appropriateness of analytical model might be comfirmed.

In this study, we measured thermal conductivity of GDL by steady state method and discussed about diffusive characteristics of GDL. Cathode Catalyst Layer (CCL) is very important part that has strong effect on the performance of Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC). In this study, we have developed one-dimensional, steady state, isothermal model of a fuel cell consisting of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM), CCL and Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL). In addition, we have considered agglomerates in CCL and we divided CCL into three regions, which have different porosity respectively, to discuss effects of oxygen diffusion and ionic conductivity on electrical generating performance. It was found that the distribution of CCL porosity may have big influence on the PEFC power generating characteristics.

Proton conductivity of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM), which is used as electrolyte of the PEFC, depends on water content of PEM. It is very difficult to measure local water transport phenomena, so we use numerical analysis to grasp this effect. In this study, the effect of water in a PEFC was discussed by comparing experimental results with analytical results, which were conducted by unsteady two-dimensional model. Analytical results showed good agreement with experimental results of voltage response after sudden supplied gas humidity change for the conditions without flooding. In addition to these study, by calculating humidity distributions in a PEFC, we illustrated the relationship between water content of PEM and cell voltage.
