<p>This study introduces a novel low-temperature electrochemical flow reactor for the efficient trichloromethylation of benzaldehyde using electrogenerated bases (EGBs). The setup achieved precise temperature control by leveraging a Peltier-cooled system and a divided flow reactor with carbon-felt electrodes without requiring external cooling baths. Optimization of reaction parameters, including flow rate, temperature, and charge passed, resulted in a maximum yield of 67 % for 2,2,2-trichloro-1-phenylethanol, demonstrating significantly enhanced stability and reactivity of EGBs. This system exhibits a productivity of 1.01 mmol h−1, which is 6.7 times higher than that of a prior microflow reactor approach, and successfully scales up to reactions involving 5 mmol of substrate. Cooling was identified as a critical factor in stabilizing the reactive intermediates, while further experiments confirmed the inefficacy of external cooling components alone. This robust and scalable reactor design highlights the potential for advancing low-temperature electrochemical synthesis and unlocking new reaction pathways.</p>

To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, there is an urgent need to transition from major power sources to renewable energy and electrify various manufacturing technologies. This is also inevitable in the production of basic organic chemicals, which are used as raw materials in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, entailing organic chemical production processes that significantly reduce heat consumption. Therefore, the electrosynthesis of organic chemical products, as an enabling technology for electrification in the chemical industry, has received considerable attention. This study outlines the history, features, and challenges involved in organic electrosynthesis and introduces organic electrosynthetic processes using solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) reactors, which have the potential to realize carbon neutrality.

<p>Photocatalytic single-electron transfer (SET) reactions involving perfluoroalkyl halides play a crucial role in synthetic organic chemistry. However, the electrochemical data for these compounds, which are essential in the discussion of the SET process, are missing. In this study, the electrochemical reduction potentials of perfluoroalkyl halides, alkyl halides, and other analogous compounds were investigated in 0.1 M Bu4NPF6/CH3CN using Ag, Pt, and glassy carbon electrodes. The Ag electrode showed remarkable catalytic properties and a positive reduction peak shift during the reduction reaction; this indicates that the Ag electrode is suitable for estimating the electrochemical potential of the SET process. This study provides a comprehensive dataset for the electrochemical measurements of perfluoroalkyl and alkyl halides, which will help synthetic organic chemists select appropriate reaction systems for these compounds.</p>

<p>Organic electrosynthesis enables clean, sustainable, and unique molecular transformations; however, its application to polymeric materials is restricted by their sterically demanding nature, which hinders quantitative electron transfer at the electrode surface. Herein, we report, for the first time, a hole-catalytic reaction triggered via anodic oxidation as a key strategy for achieving a high degree of electrochemical transformation in polymeric materials. Careful molecular and reaction design enabled hole-catalytic benzylic substitution, with an 88% degree of substitution, in a sterically hindered polymer, via an electrolytically generated radical cation. Mechanistic studies revealed that through-space delocalization of holes between neighboring aromatic systems contributes significantly to the stabilization of the radical cation species and intra-chain hole transfer. Thus, this study establishes hole catalysis as an effective strategy for the electrochemical transformation of polymers, which may aid the design of sustainable electrosynthetic strategies for functional macromolecules.</p>

<p>β-Scission from alkoxy radical enables selective Csp3-Csp3 bond cleavage under ambient conditions, offering a useful method for organic synthesis. Various photocatalytic systems for β-scission have been reported, where proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism plays a key role in the generation of alkoxy radical and thus β-scission. Electrochemical β-scission has been mainly pioneered in the presence of mediator, and a direct electrochemical system has rarely been investigated. Here, we investigated the β-scission via direct electrochemical oxidation using a model compound with β-O-4 linkage. Synthetic experiments suggested smooth progress of β-scission in the presence of collidine as a base. Cyclic voltammetry measurement, voltammetric simulation, and quantum simulation suggested the PCET mechanism is responsible for the electrochemical reaction, which is followed by β-scission process. This report provides fundamental insights into the electrochemical β-scission via direct electron transfer on the electrode, which contribute to future applications such as biomass valorization.</p>

<p>Redox behavior is a fundamental and fascinating feature of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements are commonly performed to estimate the electronic structure of PAHs and to determine the stability of their oxidation and reduction states. However, the influences of electrolytes on electrochemically oxidized/reduced PAHs have rarely been discussed. In this note, we report voltammetric analyses of five PAHs (anthracene, 9,10-dimethylanthracene, phenanthrene, pyrene, and perylene) in Bu4NB(C6F5)4/CH2Cl2 and Bu4NTfO/CH2Cl2, respectively, to highlight how the electrolyte-coordination affects the oxidative voltammetric behavior of PAHs. In most cases, reversible voltammetric responses were obtained with Bu4NB(C6F5)4/CH2Cl2, suggesting that this electrolyte is enough weakly coordinating to investigate its intrinsic oxidation behavior. On the other hand, irreversible voltammetric responses were obtained with Bu4NTfO/CH2Cl2, indicating that the presence of a relatively coordinating anion, TfO−, destabilizes the radical cation species and induces further chemical and electrochemical processes. This study provides hints for rational electrolyte design to properly understand the redox behavior of molecules and maximize the potential of functional molecules for applications related to redox chemistry.</p>

Electrocatalytic oxidation of cyclohexene was performed in proton-exchange membrane (PEM) and anion-exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers. For the efficient electrocatalytic oxidation, the an -ode catalyst material, applied potential, and solvent used were opti-mized. In addition, the differences in reactivity between the PEM and AEM electrolyzers were clarified and a mechanism for the oxidation of cyclohexene in each electrolyzer was proposed.

Flow microreactors are well-suited for organic electrosynthesis because they provide a large surface area for reactions and enable precise control of the residence time. Here, we developed three novel electrochemical flow microreactors for organic electrosynthesis: undivided, divided, and electrophotochemical reactors. These flow reactors were easily assembled using modules made of solvent-resistant plastics and feature high interchangeability of each component and the applicability of a reference electrode. We evaluated our reactors on the basis of the redox response of ferrocene and ferrocenemethanol. The results suggested that the reactors maintain laminar flow with both aqueous and nonaqueous electrolytes. We applied these reactors to paired electrosynthesis and electrophotocatalysis, demonstrating the utility of these systems for electrosynthesis in a laminar flow.

In this work, we developed a continuous flow emulsion electrosynthetic system. This new flow system involves 20 kHz ultrasonication for acoustic emulsification of water-insoluble organic amines in an aqueous electrolyte without the use of a surfactant, followed by emulsion electrolysis in the flow microreactor and separation of the emulsion into aqueous and oil product (organic nitriles) phases using a liquid-liquid separator. The 20 kHz ultrasonication provided a stable emulsified solution containing organic amine droplets with a relatively narrow size distribution in the micrometer range. The subsequent emulsion electrolysis in the microreactor yielded the desired nitrile product very effectively. In addition, in a continuous flow operation, the emulsion after the electrolysis was efficiently separated into an aqueous electrolyte and oil product using a liquid-liquid separator. The proposed system is robust, and the desired product was successfully synthesized at the gram scale.

<p>In this study, we report one step electrochemical trimerization of catechol to 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP) for the first time. Electrochemical trimerization was demonstrated in a flow microreactor, which offers advantages for reaction screening owing to short reaction time and small reaction scale, as well as avoiding the further oxidation of HHTP. The use of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) as a solvent was essential for the efficient production of HHTP. Computational simulation, p<i>K</i>a calculation, and electrochemical measurements gave some important insights into the mechanism of the electrochemical oxidation of catechol in HFIP.</p>

In order to change the energy release properties of energetic materials by altering the electronic state, the electrolytic oxidation of azoles with sodium perchlorate was carried out at conditions determined by linear sweep voltammetry. The change in electronic state due to the electrolytic oxidation was verified using ultraviolet spectroscopy. The thermal stability of products was investigated using sealed cell differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetricdifferential thermal analysis. The electrolytic oxidation provided products whose onset temperatures of peaks differed from those of reactant azoles. The electrolytic oxidation destabilized 1,2,4-triazole (TA) and 4-amino-1,2,4-triazole (4ATA), but increased the stability of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (3ATA). However, distinct exothermic peaks were observed and <i>QDSC</i> significantly increased for all triazole products. The gasification rates increased by more than 50 % due to electrolytic oxidation. In particular, electrolytic oxidized TA with perchlorate reached 99.5 % of gasification rate. These results confirmed that electrolytic oxidation is a promising method for developing new energetic materials with favorable energy release properties.

<p>A porous polypyrrole (PPy) material having a three-dimensionally developed, continuous porous structure was fabricated by using a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) monolith as a template. The PAN monolith was easily produced through a thermally induced phase separation approach. Electroconductive Au/PAN monolith was prepared by electroless Ni plating and substitution plating for Au in order to use a PAN monolith as a template electrode for the electrodeposition of PPy. Then a PPy/Au/PAN monolith was prepared by the template electrodeposition of PPy on the Au/PAN monolith template electrode. PPy was found to be uniformly deposited on the entire template electrode, including its inside. Cyclic voltammetry experiments revealed that the PPy/Au/PAN monolith exhibited much higher electrochemical capacitance due to its porous structure. This new material could potentially be used in energy device applications such as capacitors and batteries.</p>

The electrochemical flow microreactor allowed effective synthesis of a soluble PP without its deposition. The molecular weight of PP could be controlled by selecting reaction conditions for the electrochemical polymerization in the microreactor. In addition, the role of trimethylsilyl (TMS) group in this reaction process was clarified by the comparison to the polymerization of unsubstituted benzene.</p>
