<p> In this study, model tests were conducted on a masonry structure model to investigate the mechanical effects of a shallow tunnel excavation on a neighboring masonry structure. Tunnel excavation was simulated by lowering a trapdoor, and the relative horizontal position of the masonry structure and tunnel, overburden height, and the shape of the masonry wall were varied to observe the deformation of the masonry structure and the reaction of the surrounding ground. The results showed that the effect of tunnel excavation on the masonry structure is governed by the lateral spacing between the masonry and tunnel: a) Excavation in the ground of the front side of the masonry causes deformation in the form of masonry sinking and overturning; b) Excavation directly under the masonry causes deformation so that the masonry sinks vertically down with the ground; and c) Tunnel excavation on the backfill side of the masonry wall causes deformation in the ground, including the masonry, where a circular-slip surface is generated in the ground including the masonry.</p>

<p>Pre-ground improvement is an auxiliary method for shallow overburden tunnels in which the tunnel excavation is performed after improving the ground on top of the tunnel with/without sides by the replacement method and/or the cement mixing method. Although it has been confirmed in previous studies that pre-ground improvement enhances the tunnel face stability and reduces the settlement of the ground surface during the tunnel excavation, the seismic behavior of tunnels with pre-ground improvement has not been fully investigated. In this study, a two-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element analysis is performed on an actual reinforced concrete shallow overburden tunnel with a ground improvement. The damage of the reinforced concrete tunnel during earthquakes is discussed in detail. </p>

The current study examined the impact of incorporating low-density polyethylene (LDPE) on the behavior of sand through consolidated-drained triaxial tests. The tests varied parameters such as percentage addition and inter-particle void ratio. Results showed that the peak strength of LDPE-mixed sand increased by roughly 40% for 1.5% to 2.0% LDPE content compared to unreinforced specimens. However, peak strength decreased with further increases in LDPE content beyond 2.0%. Thus, LDPE content of 1.5% to 2.0% was identified as the optimal mass percentage for increasing sand strength. The shear stiffness of the LDPE mixed sand also decreased by 25-35% compared to unreinforced samples. The study attributed strength variation and stiffness reduction of sand mixed with LDPE to friction characteristics between sand particle-to-sand particle, sand particles-to-LDPE, and LDPE-toLDPE, and microscopic observations of the specimens. Although low-friction LDPE reduced initial stiffness, peak strength increased due to the pullout resistance of LDPE sheets across potential shear bands. However, excessive LDPE addition caused pronounced overlapping of LDPE sheets, leading to a decrease in frictional properties and a reduction in strength.

The effect of particle shape on micro and macroscopic behaviour is investigated experimentally through a series of biaxial compression tests on round and angular rods. Dual-size assemblies of thousands of circular (round) or hexagonal (angular) particles were sheared under three confining pressures. The displacement, rotation and evolution of coordination number of all the particles during the shearing process were identified through image analysis. The macroscopic results show that the angular assemblies exhibit higher strengths and dilations. Angular particles tend to be more dilative and have higher critical state strengths. The microscale features show that the magnitude of particles' rotation is higher in circular assemblies. Particle rotations are normally distributed within both samples. However, rotating clusters are observed in angular samples. Angular particles are more resistant to rotations due to interlocking and clustering, causing higher strength at the macroscale. The absolute mean cumulative rotation for the circular assemblies at the end of shearing was approximately twice that of the angular assemblies. In circular assemblies, small particles rotate almost twice as much as big particles, which initiates a ball-bearing effect that further contributes to strength reduction. Particle rotation further governs the average coordination number, with hexagonal aggregates having higher coordination numbers.

<p> The estimation of tunnel deformation from the change in the profile is expected to improve the efficiency of inspection. This paper considers the applicability of a tunnel deformation estimation from a point cloud adopting elliptic Fourier analysis. Tunnel deformation is estimated from the difference in the Fourier series representations of the outline before and after deformation. The deformation of a Shinkansen tunnel calculated in the numerical analysis is estimated to evaluate the method’s accuracy. The numerical results show that the estimation of the normal displacement is highly reliable, with the estimation error being roughly proportional to the measurement error. The estimated displacement fluctuates around the true value. In contrast, the reliability of the estimation of the tangential displacement tends to be low because this displacement does not contribute to the change in the outline. The estimation error increases rapidly with the measurement error, and the estimated displacement tends to be independent of the true value. The proposed estimation method is applicable even when the outline is not closed.</p>

A theory is proposed to evaluate the loosening earth pressure (vertical earth pressure after excavation) acting on a shallow tunnel in unsaturated ground with an arbitrary groundwater level. The theory is developed based on the limit equilibrium theory, combining soil-water characteristic curves, Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria, and effective stress for unsaturated soils. The proposed theory is applied to predict the vertical distribution of loosening earth pressure in unsaturated ground, which shows a significant difference from that in saturated ground. In unsaturated ground, suction contributes to the increase in effective loosening earth pressure and shear resistance. The remarkable effects of groundwater depth, soil type, and scale of overburden height and trapdoor width on loosening earth pressure are also revealed. Based on the soil-water characteristic curve, the degree of saturation decreases, which causes wet density to decrease and the total and effective loosening earth pressures to have contrary tendencies. Moreover, effective loosening earth pressures vary with soil type as the degree of saturation varies. The total loosening earth pressures are, however, very similar regardless of soil type, because wet density and shear resistance have similar tendencies. The proposed theory provides a valid model for loosening earth pressure in unsaturated ground that will be useful for shallow tunnel excavations.

<p>Due to heavy rain in northern Kyushu in July 2012, failure of the Yabe River levee occurred, caused by local piping in highly permeable foundation ground, and it was a great shock when river engineers and researchers realized that levees can collapse without overflow. Regarding the Koyoshi River levee slope slip and the Kakehashi River levee slope failure that occurred in July 2013, it is also considered that the damage was the result of highly permeable foundation ground. In this paper, to clarify the seepage failure mechanism of river levee with highly permeable foundation ground, numerical simulations of model tests were conducted using a soil-water-air coupled finite deformation analysis code. As a result, the simulation was able to reproduce the difference between the case when the seepage failure occurred and the case when the seepage failure did not occur in the experiment. In addition, using this analysis code, case studies were conducted and the influence of introducing suction effect to elastoplastic constitutive model on seepage failure behavior was also discussed.</p>

<p>A soil-water-air coupled elastoplastic finite deformation simulation of a seepage model test is conducted. In the model test, the foundation ground has a sand layer with relatively higher permeability covered with another sand layer with relatively lower permeability. The simulation can well reproduce time and place of the boiling phenomenon in the ground. In addition, slip failure of the levee body can be simulated better when introducing suction effect into the elastoplastic constitutive equation. The soil element on the slip surface showed softening behavior with plastic volume expansion.</p>

The reinforced earth walls have come into wide use in Japan after 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake in particular. High seismic resistance of the reinforced earth walls has been shown by the large earthquakes occurring in Japan, e.g., the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake and the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. However, a reinforcing mechanism of the seismic resistance regarding to the reinforced earth walls has been clarified insufficiently. The authors have developed the new reinforced earth wall using the reinforcement member incorporating both a friction resistance and a bearing resistance. A prototype reinforced earth wall was constructed in Sendai City after the Tohoku Earthquake, and then, dynamic and long-term static data in the reinforced earth wall had been measured for three years. In the present paper, the observed dynamic behavior of the proposed reinforcing member during the relative large two aftershocks of the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake are shown. Both a bearing resistance and a friction resistance were separately measured in a reinforced member during the aftershocks. The bearing resistance and the friction resistance acted effectively in the reinforced member at shallow and deep positions, respectively.
