A lithium-sulfur cell was developed, consisting of a Si nanoflake negative electrode, a Li2S/graphene positive electrode, and a non-flammable solvate ionic liquid electrolyte. This cell configuration allows us to avoid the use of Li metal electrode and the concomitant dendritic deposition of Li metal at the negative electrode during charging, thereby rendering the cell operation highly safe and stable. The solvate ionic liquid electrolyte solution was composed of tetraglyme, lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide, and a hydrofluoroether. The solubility of lithium polysulfide (reaction intermediate of the positive electrode) is very low, resulting in high Coulombic efficiency of discharge/charge and long cycle life of the Si/Li2S cell. Control of interfacial properties between the electrode and electrolyte is important for obtaining long lifecycle lithium-ion secondary batteries. To control interfacial degradation, we investigated the effect of changing the composition ratio of lithium salt (LiN(SO2CF3)(2)) and low-molecular-weight ether (CH3-O-(C2H4O)(3)-CH3) in the system. A highly electrochemically stable lithium salt glyme solvated ionic liquid electrolyte was realized, with long-lived, robust lithium solvation complexes by increasing the lithium salt composition ratio. Lithium secondary batteries using the electrolyte show notable suppression of the degradation of interfacial resistance at the interface of the electrolyte and the positive electrode (high oxidation state), which leads to a longer life-cycle of the batteries.

Electrochemical reactions in Li-S cells with a solvate ionic liquid (SIL) electrolyte composed of tetraglyme (G4) and Li[TFSA] (TFSA: bis(trifiuoromethanesulfonyl)amide) are studied. The sulfur cathode (S cathode) comprises sulfur, carbon powder, and a polymer binder. Polyethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA-x) with different degrees of saponification (x%) are used as binders to prepare the composite cathodes. For the Li-S cell containing PEO binder, lithium polysulfides (Li2Sm, 2 <= m <= 8), reaction intermediates of the S cathode, dissolve into the electrolyte, and Li2Sm acts as a redox shuttle in the Li-S cell. In contrast, in the Li-S cell with PVA-x binder, the dissolution of Li2Sm is suppressed, leading to high columbic efficiencies during charge-discharge cycles. The compatibility of the PVA-x binder with the SIL electrolyte changes depending on the degree of saponification. Decreasing the degree of saponification leads to increased electrolyte uptake by the PVA-x binder, increasing the charge and discharge capacities of Li-S cell. The rate capability of Li-S cell is also enhanced by the partial swelling of the PVA-x binder. The enhanced performance of Li-S cell containing PVA-x is attributed to the lowering of resistance of Li+ ion transport in the composite cathode. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electrochemical properties of a mechanochemically synthesized Li22Sn5 electrode in a solvate ionic liquid-based electrolyte were investigated. The electrolyte was composed of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (Li[TFSA]), tetraglyme (G4), and a hydrofluoroether solvent (HFE) in a molar ratio of 1:1:6.2, in which Li+ and G4 formed a 1:1 complex cation of {Li(G4)(+). The Li22Sn5 electrode exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 500 mAhg(-1) in this electrolyte; however, the capacity decreased with increased numbers of charge-discharge cycles. This was attributed to the Li-Sn alloy's volume change in the electrode during the electrochemical reaction. To examine the behavior of the electrode material in a lithium-sulfur battery, a full cell consisting of a Li22Sn5 anode, S cathode, and [Li(G4)][TFSA]/HFE electrolyte was fabricated. The cell was discharged and charged stably without severe side reactions. The dissolution of lithium polysulfides, reaction intermediates with the sulfur cathode, was effectively suppressed in the electrolyte, leading to efficient charge-discharge cycling of the Li22Sn5-S cell. Lithium sulfide (Li2S) as a cathodic material in Li-S batteries can not only deliver a high theoretical specific capacity of 1166 mA h g(-1), but also is essential for batteries using Li-free anode materials such as silicon and graphite. Various efforts have been made to synthesize a highly efficient Li2S-carbon composite; however, the electronically and ionically insulating nature and high melting point of Li2S strongly complicate the synthetic procedures, making it difficult to realize the expected capacity. Herein, a very simple method is proposed to prepare Li2S/graphene composites by one-pot pyrolysis of a mixture of graphene nanoplatelet aggregates (GNAs) and low-cost lithium sulfate (Li2SO4). For the first time, the entire pyrolysis process is clarified by thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry, wherein GNAs were found to partly serve as a carbon source to reduce Li2SO4 to Li2S, while the remaining GNAs formed thin graphene sheets as a result of this in situ etching, as a highly conductive host can immobilize the generated Li2S by intimate contact. Consequently, the obtained Li2S/graphene composite, combined with a Li2Sx-insoluble (x = 4-8) electrolyte developed by our group, exhibits excellent electrochemical behavior for Li-S batteries.

Traditional methods for preparing highly porous, nitrogen/sulfur-codoped carbons require either template-based tedious, time-consuming procedures or harsh chemical/physical activation processes. In this paper, we report a very facile method to prepare such carbons via the direct carbonization of a single protic salt, prop-2-en-1-aminium hydrogensulfate, in the absence of any hard/soft template or activation agent. Depending on the carbonization temperatures, the obtained carbons exhibited tunable structures and properties, in terms of their morphologies, surface areas, pore structures, and chemical compositions. Particularly, the carbon material obtained at 1000 degrees C had a very large surface area (1149 m(2) g(-1)), even comparable to that of traditionally activated carbon. Among all the samples, the carbon obtained at 900 degrees C, exclusively having a narrowly distributed microporous structure, exhibited a significant CO2 uptake of 2.58 mmol g(-1) at 298 K and 1 atm. This carbon could also be easily regenerated and reused without any evident loss of CO2-adsorption capacity.

The rapidly increasing demand for electrical and hybrid vehicles and stationary energy storage requires the development of "beyond Li-ion batteries" with high energy densities that exceed those of state-of-the-art Li-ion batteries. Li-S batteries, which have very high theoretical capacities and energy densities, are believed to be one of the most promising candidates. The sulfur-based electrochemical reaction requires novel electrolytes to replace the classical carbonate-based electrolyte systems inherited from Li-ion batteries because carbonates are incompatible with the intermediate polysulfides in Li-S batteries. In addition, the theoretical specific capacities and projected energy densities of Li-S batteries are difficult to achieve experimentally, mainly because of the electronically insulating nature of sulfur and lithium sulfide cathodes, and the shuttle effect; this is a serious issue associated with the dissolution and diffusion of soluble polysulfides in most potential electrolytes and causes rapid capacity fading. It is therefore highly desirable to explore, modify, and/or optimize electrolytes for Li-S batteries to address these issues and improve their capacities, cycling stabilities, rate performances, and energy densities. An overview of recent developments in electrolytes for Li-S batteries is provided with a focus on the chemistry of polysulfides in different electrolyte media, including polysulfide solubility and its relevance to battery performance.

Three-dimensionally macroporous nitrogen-doped carbon materials are fabricated via carbonization of an ionic-liquid-based small molecule precursor, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide, using opal silica colloidal crystals as a hard template. As compared to traditional polymerizable monomer-based precursors such as furfuryl alcohol, the entire process involving ionic liquid does not require any acid catalyst and prepolymerization step. More importantly, nitrogen heteroatoms can be incorporated into the carbon skeleton insitu. The obtained inverse opal carbons possess large surface areas and pore volumes, and high nitrogen content. When acting as metal-free electrocatalysts, the inverse opal carbons exhibit high catalytic activity and selectivity towards the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline electrolyte, much better than that of the furfuryl-alcohol-derived inverse opal carbon and close to that of commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Solidification of fluidic ionic liquids into porous materials yields porous ionic networks that combine the unique characteristics of ionic liquids with the common features of polymers and porous materials. This minireview reports the most recent advances in the design of porous ionic liquids. A summary of the synthesis of ordered and disordered porous ionic liquid-based nanoparticles or membranes with or without templates is provided, together with the new concept of room temperature porous ionic liquids. As a versatile platform for functional materials, porous ionic liquids have shown widespread applications in catalysis, adsorption, sensing, actuation, etc. This new research direction towards ionic liquids chemistry is still in its early stages but has great potential.

Nitrogen-doped carbon materials (NDCs) play an important role in various fields. A great deal of effort has been devoted to obtaining carbon materials with a high nitrogen content; however, much is still unknown about the structure of the nitrogen-doped materials and the maximum nitrogen content possible for such compounds. Here, we demonstrate an interesting relationship between the N/C molar ratio and the N content of NDCs. The upper limit for the nitrogen content of NDCs that might be achieved was estimated and found to strongly depend on the carbonization temperature (14.32wt% at 1000 degrees C and 21.66wt% at 900 degrees C), irrespective of the precursor or preparation conditions. Simulations suggest that, especially in the carbon architectures obtained at high temperatures, nitrogen atoms are always located on separate hexagon moieties in a graphitic configuration, thereby yielding a critical N/C molar ratio very close to the value estimated from the experimental results.

Molecular dynamics simulations of equimolar mixtures of glymes (triglyme and tetraglyme) and Li[TFSA] (lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) amide) show that the glyme chain length affects the coordination geometries of Li+, which induces the changes in interactions between the [Li(glyme)](+) complex and [TFSA](-) anions and diffusion of ions in the equimolar mixtures.
