The unique features of Typhoon Rai (2021): an observational study

This study evaluated the potential for reducing storm surges in experiments designed to artificially increase the surface drag coefficient (Cd) at the entrance of Tokyo Bay. Using atmospheric and storm surge models, we varied Cd within the range 0.005-0.025 and the area of increased friction. The results showed that increased friction at the entrance to Tokyo Bay led to decreased wind speeds, significantly reducing storm surge height, particularly at Tokyo. Under the maximum friction increase, the storm surge height at Tokyo decreased by up to 24%. The storm surge reduction was most effective when Cd was increased to 0.010, with further increases in Cd or the area of friction yielding diminishing wind speed and storm surge. The findings suggest a novel approach, similar to traditional coastal windbreak forests, for mitigating meteorological and oceanographic disasters, with potential applications for protecting urban areas within bays from storm surges.

Shallow Coastal Water Responses During the Near Landfall Intensification of Tropical Cyclones in the South China Sea

This study reproduced the meteorological conditions, including typhoon movements near Japan and wind changes over Tokyo, during the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, using a numerical simulation model (Weather Research and Forecasting v4.3) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) atmospheric reanalysis of the 20th century (ERA-20C). The reproduced meteorological conditions coincided in many respects with weather analysis maps and observations produced by the Central Meteorological Observatory. Strong southerly winds around noon on the day of the earthquake were associated with a typhoon on the coast of the Sea of Japan and appear to have had a significant impact on the spread of fires immediately after the earthquake. However, the strong evening and nighttime winds observed at the Tokyo station are likely to have been local phenomena associated with the fire spread, which caused severe damage in Tokyo after the earthquake.

SolaCam: A Deep Learning Model for Solar Radiation Estimation Using Consumer Cameras

Shallow coastal seawater response during the passage of near-landfall intensification (NLI) tropical cyclones (TCs) and non-NLI TCs was examined using oceanic and atmospheric reanalysis data and observations. The sea surface temperature ahead of the NLI-TC track is maintained or even increases when NLI-TC is approaching the land. The magnitude of the wind stress, which plays an important role in the NLI process, is related to the zonal surface wind on the right side of the tracks. Coastal mixed layer warming can be explained by Ekman transport under sustained wind stress due to surface wind forcing. The successive deepening of the coastal ocean boundary layer and the increase in warming in the subsurface seawater temperature by an average of 0.3°C, could maintain thermal capacity in a certain degree. This shallow coastal water response could partly explain the NLI progress in the northern South China Sea, indicating the importance of coastal ocean dynamics and air-sea interactions.

This study proposes a deep learning approach called SolaCam to accurately estimate solar radiation from the images captured by cameras. The proposed SolaCam performs deep learning by utilizing both image features and theoretical maximum solar radiation that vary with time and location. The trained model is capable of accurately estimating solar radiation on the ground surface from sky images captured by smartphones, fixed-point cameras, and other devices. The developed SolaCam can use a remote sensing function, which estimates solar radiation, on inexpensive camera-equipped devices.

Investigation of Characteristics of Maximum Storm Surges in Japanese Coastal Regions Caused by Typhoon Jebi (2018) Based on Typhoon Track Ensemble Simulations

This study investigated the atmospheric and oceanic contributions to the genesis of Typhoon Faxai in 2019. Our statistical analysis using the tropical cyclone genesis score (TGS) attributed the tropical disturbance that developed into Faxai (Pre-Faxai) to easterly waves (EWs). The EW score evaluated by a grid version of the TGS (Grid-EW) averaged around the occurrence of Pre-Faxai was approximately twice as large as the climatological mean, and it was the second largest value in the past 38 years. The Pre-Faxai area with high Grid-EW scores could be traced back to the eastern North Pacific (ENP) around August 25, 2019. The lower-troposphere environment characterized by high Grid-EW scores was favorable for vortex formation because it provided a containment area for moisture entrained by the developing circulation or lofted by the deep convection therein. The Pre-Faxai area with high Grid-EW scores moved westward due to the background easterly flow over the ENP and then entered the western North Pacific (WNP). The Typhoon Intensity Forecast Scheme (TIFS) showed that the important environments for its genesis were ocean conditions and the vertical wind shear. The oceanic conditions contributed to the development of Pre-Faxai as it traveled over the WNP. The enhancement of vertical wind shear and subsequent suppression of the development of Pre-Faxai were caused by the lower-troposphere easterly winds associated with high EW scores. They were also caused by upper-troposphere westerly winds associated with an upper cold low northwest of Pre-Faxai. When the vertical shear decreased with weakening of the upper cold low, Pre-Faxai reached tropical storm intensity on September 4. Therefore, TGS and TIFS detected Pre-Faxai 10 days before the typhoon arose, which indicates that monitoring environmental factors such as EW and vertical wind shear are important for disaster prevention.

Although a number of studies have been conducted of the lightning activity in hurricanes and typhoons, little information has been obtained on the three-dimensional (3-D) structure of the lightning, or how it is related to the precipitation structures within the storms. Here, we utilize observational data from the 3-D Tokyo Lightning Mapping Array (Tokyo LMA), a Japan Meteorological Agency C-band Doppler radar, and the Japanese Lightning Detection Network (JLDN) to conduct a study of the lightning activity during Typhoon Faxai (2019) in comparison with the storm's precipitation structure. This is done for the dissipating stage of the typhoon, when the eyewall was well within the range of the instruments and undergoing a surge in lightning activity. Of particular interest in the surge was the occurrence of numerous positive cloud-to-ground (+CG) lightning flashes. Detailed study of the Tokyo LMA and JLDN data shows that, out of 52 flashes during the surge, 29 flashes or 56 % produced positive strokes to ground, an unheard of number considering that, from the lightning and 3-D radar structures, the storm appeared to be normally electrified, and under such circumstances would produce negative rather than positive strokes to ground. It also focuses attention on the question of how +CGs are produced in tropical cyclones in the first place. Based on a lack of −CG strokes and the LMA observations showing that the +CG strokes are produced mid-way or toward the end of normal polarity intracloud (IC) flashes, it appears that the dissipating storm cells have a depleted or horizontally sheared mid-level negative charge, such that an IC flash propagating into and through upper positive storm charge effectively funnels a steadily increasing amount of positive charge into the mid-level initiation region, eventually causing the positive breakdown of the IC flash to turn downward toward ground, producing a +CG stroke.

The maximum storm surges caused by Typhoon Jebi (2018) were examined using a storm surge model and using track ensemble simulations based on a meteorological model and a parametric tropical cyclone (TC) model. The storm surge at Osaka Port was estimated more accurately by the meteorological model than the parametric TC model. The differences between both models were due to a “wind setup effect”, where the topography enhanced surface winds over Osaka Bay. The typhoon-track ensemble simulations demonstrated that the maximum storm surge was dependent on the perturbation of the track of Typhoon Jebi along the entire coast of the Japanese Islands, including the main island, Kyushu, and Shikoku. Open shallow bays had maximum storm surges exceeding 2.50 m. In coastal areas where larger maximum storm surges were estimated, the longitudinally perturbed “worst-case course” appeared 0.4–0.8° west or east of the “hit course”, indicating that the wind setup effect was an important factor in the maximum storm surge. The distance of the worst-case course from the hit course was almost the same as the radius of the maximum wind of Typhoon Jebi. Although the models had similar worstcase courses for each coastal area, the meteorological model estimated a slightly higher simulated maximum storm surge than the parametric TC model. For the main island, Kyushu, and Shikoku, approximately 6 % of the maximum storm surges exceeded 2.00 m. Although these values may differ for other typhoons and sampling points, it is important to estimate the maximum storm surges and worst-case courses at all coastal areas, including regions where storm surges by typhoons are unknown yet they occurred, because this will provide important information enabling effective disaster prevention and risk management.

Intensity and Structural Changes of Numerically Simulated Typhoon Faxai (1915) before Landfall

Increasing sea surface temperatures (SST) caused by global warming might affect the recurrence wind speed by typhoon. Because the future spatial distribution of SST is uncertain, we proposed a method for uniformly increasing SST for use as the boundary condition of typhoon model. The output of statistical typhoon simulation with uniform increase of SST yielded the typhoon intensity, as did the model based on physical processes. Furthermore, estimation of the relation between the amount of SST increase and recurrence wind speed of typhoons was conducted using statistical typhoon simulation with uniformly increasing SST. Results show that 400-year recurrence wind speed will be less than the 100-year recurrence value in areas except Okinawa and northern Japan by the end of the 21st century.

Future Changes in Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Genesis Environment in High-Resolution Large-Ensemble Simulations

A numerical simulation of Typhoon Faxai (1915), which made landfall with a central pressure of 960 hPa in the Kanto region of Japan, was conducted using a nonhydrostatic numerical model with a 1-km grid spacing. Faxai sustained a symmetric structure until the landfall and caused severe damage due to strong winds. The simulation successfully simulated the realistic track and intensity of Faxai for 48 h around landfall. The simulated intensity was strong until the time of landfall, and the spatial size of the vortex was small. The structure of the simulated Faxai, identified as having an axisymmetric flow field and eyewall, was similar to that of a welldeveloped tropical cyclone (TC) in the tropics. Around the TC center, the surface latent heat flux was over 300 W m−2 until landfall, and the vertical wind shear was less than 9 m s−1 between the 1.5- and 12.0-km altitudes, which is relatively weak at midlatitudes. The maximum potential intensity (MPI) was calculated using environmental parameters around the simulated TC. The simulated and best track TC intensities exceeded the MPI for approximately 12 h before landfall, that is, the TC was in a superintense state. The superintensity was mainly caused by the presence of supergradient wind, which, in turn, resulted from the strong intensity and axisymmetric structure of the typhoon. The simulated TC satisfies the assumptions for the formulation of the MPI during the quasi-steady state, except for the gradient wind balance, implying that the structure of a TC is similar to that of a developed TC in the tropics. The present analyses suggest that the strong intensity of Faxai results from favorable environmental conditions and vortex structure.

How Significant are Low-Level Flow Patterns in Tropical Cyclone Genesis over the Western North Pacific?

This study examined the diurnal cycles of brightness temperature (TB) and upper-level horizontal winds associated with tropical cyclones (TCs) over the western North Pacific basin, making use of data retrieved from geostationary-satellite (Himawari-8) observations that exhibited unprecedented temporal and spatial resolutions. The results of a spectral analysis revealed that diurnal cycles prevail in TB variations over the outer regions of TCs (300-500 km from the storm center). The dominance of the diurnal cycle was also found in variations in the radial wind (Vr) in intensive TCs, although there was no dominant cycle in tangential wind variation. In addition, coherence spectra demonstrated that the diurnal cycles of TB and Vr are significantly coupled in intensive TCs. The migration speed of TB and Vr anomalies exceeded the time-mean Vr, and it was speculated that diurnal cycle signals propagate (i.e., are not advected) toward the outer regions of TCs.

Development Conditions for Tropical Storms over the Western North Pacific Stratified by Large-Scale Flow Patterns

Improvement of Central Pressure Difference Reproducibility in Typhoon Tracking Simulation Model considering Sea-Surface Temperature Properties

This study investigated the characteristics and environmental conditions of tropical cyclones (TCs) over the western North Pacific from 2009 to 2017 that dissipated before reaching tropical storm strength (TDs) under unfavorable environmental conditions; we compared these with TCs that reached tropical storm strength (TSs) in terms of modulations of relevant large-scale flow patterns. The flow patterns were categorized based on five factors: shear line, confluence region, monsoon gyre, easterly waves, and Rossby wave energy dispersion from a preexisting cyclone. Among 476 cases, 263 TDs were detected using best-track data and early stage Dvorak analysis. The TCs in the environments associated with the confluence region or Rossby wave energy dispersion (easterly waves) tended to reach tropical storm strength (remain weak) compared with the other factors. The average locations of TDs at the time of cyclogenesis in the confluence region, monsoon gyre, and easterly waves (Rossby wave energy dispersion) in the summer and autumn were farther to the west (east and north) than those of TSs that exhibited the same factors. The environments around TDs were less favorable for development than those of TSs, as there were significant differences in atmospheric (oceanic) environmental parameters between TDs and TSs in the factors of confluence region, easterly waves, and Rossby wave energy dispersion (shear line, monsoon gyre, and Rossby wave energy dispersion). The environmental conditions for reaching tropical storm strength over their developing stage, using five factors, can be summarized as follows: higher tropical cyclone heat potential in the shear line and monsoon gyre, weak vertical shear in the confluence region, wet conditions in the easterly waves, and higher sea surface temperatures and an intense preexisting cyclone in Rossby wave energy dispersion from a preexisting cyclone.

Sea surface temperature change due to the global warming may affect the development of typhoons. In order to estimate extreme wind speed, a tracking model of typhoon simulation considering the sea surface temperature was developed before, but there were some discrepancies between estimation and observation. In this study, from the viewpoint of characteristics of a linear model in the updating calculation, data period for the modeling was restricted to summer based on the number of typhoons approaching to Japan. Focusing on the latitude of 31.5 degrees north where almost all typhoons start to weaken, the termination condition of the typhoons was clarified. In addition, if the value calculated by updating calculation in the model exceeds the threshold, it was recalculated from the time of occurrence of a typhoon. As a result, the typhoon central pressure difference approached the observed value by applying these improvements to the tracking model.

Global warming influences sea surface temperature which intensifies typhoons and may change extreme value distribution of wind speed. In order to simulate typhoons affected by sea surface temperature, full-track type typhoon simulation is very effective measures. The effect of sea surface temperature on the extreme value distribution was evaluated by a past typhoon simulation. However, errors tend to accumulate because the typhoon paths simulated is long. In this study, a new model of the central pressure difference was proposed. The result showed that central pressure calculated by the new model is close to observed values.

We conducted dynamical downscaling simulations for 20 years over the Asian CORDEX domain to validate uncertainty of RSM-ROMS, a regional atmosphere and ocean coupled climate model. We compared some surface quantities simulated by RSM-ROMS with observation data sets or simulated result by RSM, a regional atmosphere climate model. The results are summarized as follows.  1) The coupled model had some systematic negative bias for observed sea surface temperature (SST), but the correlation coefficient was over 0.99 and the model reasonably captured the interannual and seasonal variations. In addition, power spectrum suggested a detailed SST structure.  2) The ocean coupling increased a tendency to overestimate precipitation over the mountainous area. On the other hand, the coupled model more accurately reproduced precipitation over the oceans.  3) Although there was cool bias of sea water temperature (SWT) more than 4 degrees Celsius at 100m depth, the coupled model captured interannual validations of SWT as similar as those of SST. This SWT bias is larger than seasonal variations, and it indicates there is uncertainty in the coupled model.  4) Net heat flux was improved in the coupled model, especially in subtropical and tropical areas but got worse in middle latitude areas.
