<p>Concern about rainfall increase due to climate change and other factors is growing, inexpensive and easy-to-use rainfall forecasting methods are required. Therefore, this study developed a rainfall forecasting model using a neural network that uses readily available weather information such as cloud images, precipitation, and humidity. The proposed model achieved 89% accuracy for 24-hour-ahead classification, exceeding the 85% accuracy of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). In addition, by focusing on the seasonality of weather and introducing time information into the forecast model, the stability of the forecast was improved. Finally, a rainfall forecast model was developed and simulated by applying AdaBelief to EfficientNetV2+Bi-LSTM. Consequently, the accuracy of both 2-hour and 24-hour-forecasts exceeded the forecast precision of the previous study and the JMA. In particular, the 24-hour-ahead rainfall forecast precision was improved by more than 10% compared to the previous research, indicating a significant improvement in precision.</p>

<p>With the emerging trend in the production of electric vehicles, many components in the car were also modified. Instead of a large, heavy, and complex internal combustion engine, light, compact, highly efficient electric motors are now being used that are superior in terms of torque to the power plant. The main difference between the body of electric-based and internal combustion engine-based cars is the presence of a battery compartment in the electric car (most often located at the bottom of the car). Moreover, in the transmission of electric vehicles, modern electric vehicles use single-stage gearboxes instead of complex multi-stage gearboxes. In this paper, we attempted to design and test a simple single-stage transmission based on planetary gear (PG) with improved efficiency through gear profile-shift modification. Below is a detailed description of the design method of the planetary gearbox and the development process. The first candidate was the 3K planetary gear without second layer ring gear and the second was the 3K planetary without second layer sun gear. Based on the analytical evaluations, the best sample was designed in SolidWorks, its prototype was manufactured, and bench tests were performed.</p>

<p>A method for three-dimensional (3D) point cloud-based object recognition and a method that uses the recognized objects for six-degree-of-freedom simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) with a high accuracy are presented. For object recognition, we use a convolutional neural network to identify the meaning of each point inside an input 3D point cloud. For scan registration, we present a highly accurate hybrid method that combines the iterative closest point with particle swarm optimization (PSO) to match the recognized points to be archived. Using PSO to match the recognized object's points in each neighboring scan can help decrease incorrect correspondences and enhance the robustness of scan matching. Compared to state-of-art methods, the proposed method achieved good performance on the KITTI odometry benchmark and our SLAM experiments.</p>

<p>We present a method for three-dimensional (3D), point cloud-based, six-dimensional (6D) simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) with high accuracy and very low computational cost. The two key points of our high accuracy and real-time SLAM process are feature extraction and scan matching optimization. For the 3D laser-based SLAM using the iterative closest point algorithm, we consider correct corresponding point pair searching for achieving high accuracy. Therefore, we propose extracting feature points from 3D point clouds for correct corresponding point pair searching. To extract features such as edges and corners in real-time, we propose the use of a trained neural network (NN). The NN used in our feature extraction scheme is a simple backpropagation (BP) NN with two hidden layers, which allows building a real-time system for 6D SLAM. To optimize the scan matching, we propose the use of particle swam optimization (PSO) and the extracted feature points. The PSO increases the accuracy of the estimated position by matching the most features with a global map stitched with all features. Compared with the state-of-art methods, the proposed method achieved the best performance for the KITTI Odometry Benchmark.</p>

<p>This paper proposes a cross–coupled two–degree–of–freedom (2–DOF) tubular surface permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM). In the proposed motor, the stator part consists of two bobbins with helical three–phase windings. The mover part is a shaft on which the segment permanent magnets are pasted in the checkered pattern. As a result, two orthogonal Lorentz forces in helical directions can be generated. The thrust force can be controlled as a sum and the rotational torque can be controlled as difference. This implies that the proposed motor has modal decomposition function of common mode and differential mode as a distinctive feature of its structure. This paper establishes the mathematical modeling of the proposed motor to represent the motion principle. The finite element analysis (FEA) results show the adequacy of the established theory. Moreover, the utility of the proposed motor is verified through experimental results obtained from prototype.</p>

The need for optimized reduction gear is crucial for the development of high-performance construction vehicles. Previous research endeavored to optimize gearbox efficiency through the optimization of key parameters, including the number of teeth, profile shift coefficient, and center distance. Nonetheless, a significant portion of efficiency decrement stems from the phenomenon of slip occurring between the engaging teeth during meshing. In the present study, the tooth profile of an involute gear was subject to modification using a newly proposed profile crowning technique. The proposed involute-like profile crowning enhances the performance of the gear in terms of average efficiency, even under heavy loads causing deformation. Through transient finite element analysis, the optimal magnitude of this modification was determined. Initially, the theoretical determination of the reference gear train efficiency yielded a value of 98.37%, a result that was subsequently validated in the analysis assuming a rigid body. However, in practical scenarios, the presence of minor deformations at the tooth interface adversely affects the efficiency, resulting in a reduced value of 98.18% and 97.99% as indicated by the analysis. Assuming a constant coefficient of friction, the tooth modification improved the efficiency to 98.48%, 98.27% and 98.09% for rigid and flexible bodies respectively. Further investigation could be made from the analysis of the loss at the contacting surfaces of the gear teeth.

<p>The zero moment point (ZMP) is a measure for realizing dynamic motion in legged robots. An important concern in ZMP-based motion control is the measurement of the ZMP itself. General humanoid robots use sensors attached to their feet to measure the reaction forces. However, this method is not applicable for wheel-legged mobile robots because it is difficult to attach force sensors inside the wheels. Therefore, this study proposes a method to determine the ZMP based on the relationship between the load and resonant frequency of the tires. The resonant frequency of the tires depends on the tire pressure. First, the relationship between the load and resonant frequency is confirmed by a frequency analysis and experiments on the wheel joints. Second, a method used to estimate the ZMP based on the relationship between the load and resonant frequency is described. Third, an online estimation technique for the ZMP is described. Finally, factors other than the vertical force that affect the frequency characteristics of the wheel are discussed. The average of the root-mean-square errors from the sensor value in the online-ZMP estimation results is 0.0361 m, which is sufficiently smaller than the typical stability margin of the support polygon of the robot.</p>

<p>In this study, how to improve usability and quality of the remote participation experience using remote-controlled robots to support the active social participation of people who have mobility issues were investigated. Specifically, to reduce the prediction error caused when using remote-controlled robots revealed in the previous study and thus the burden of the remote operation, a series of experimental results was discussed. In these experiments, the error between the stop position of the robot that cannot be directly seen on the robotic perspective image and the target position was measured. The results show that (1) the zooming image from the robotic perspective during the execution phase induces a negative prediction error. The error might be caused when the information of the current position of the robot is inconsistent with that of the stop position. This result is an extension of our previous study. (2) The above situation needs to be considered because it is assumed in the application of remote operations using robots, such as the need to observe the target information in detail like face-to-face communication. (3) Depth cognition is important for remote control using images from the robotic perspective, and it was found that the information of the optic flow, which was thought to affect the depth motion perception involuntarily, significantly affected the size cue regarding the target position.</p>

<p> Optimization of robotic bipedal walking widely uses simplified dynamical models to minimize the computational cost and generate fast solutions, but this poses the problem of modeling errors and increased inaccuracy. Moreover, direct methods of optimization are almost always used; however, most are not implemented to satisfy Pontryagin's Principle, which can lead to suboptimal solutions. This study presents the optimization of planar robotic bipedal walking using exact dynamics. We apply pseudospectral optimal control to optimize gait generation using two accuracy requirements: nonlinear multi-degree-of-freedom whole-body dynamics and satisfied conditions of optimality according to Pontryagin's Principle. In order to consistently achieve solvability of optimization in this type of problem, we present a novel methodology consisting of synergic techniques that address well-known numerical difficulties of optimization.</p>

<p>This paper presents the external force estimation for helical motors contain the magnetic levitation system. The helical shape of helical motors induces a wide inductive gap; thus, their thrust density is 1.5 times higher than that of general cylindrical linear motors. Furthermore, by magnetically levitating the mover, the motor can be directly driven. However, owing to the variations in the magnetic attractive force acting on the mover, the accuracy of external force estimation is lower than that of cylindrical motors. To solve this problem, this study proposed the combination of the thrust and torque disturbance observers of this motor for external force estimation irrespective of the magnetic attractive force. Numerical simulations and experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method can achieve the highest precision.</p>

<p>Collaborative robots are expected to be applied in many fields in the near future, while high rigidity and high backdrivability are needed. A low friction gear is a good candidate for hightening backdrivability, but backlash on the gear is an issue for such a gear. In this paper, we therefore propose a two inertia model including nonlinear elements and tortion torque feedback using encoders. We showed that degradation of control accuracy due to internal deadzone, which is a demerit of the reduction gear, can be conpensated.</p>

<p>This article presents a technique for improving the flow rate estimation range in an axial-flow water turbine generator, which is used as a substitute for the flow rate control valve in an air conditioning control system. This article also presents a flow rate estimation technique that uses the characteristic function of the axial-flow water turbine generator based on the angular speed, the torque, and the pitch angle of guide vane. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is validated by experiments.</p>

<p>A typical electric power-assisted bicycle is equipped with an expensive torque sensor to measure a rider's pedaling torque. In this paper, we propose a method to estimate the pedaling torque from Hall effect sensors mounted on the motor, reducing the cost of electric power-assisted bicycles. It is necessary to separate pedaling torque and load torque from disturbance torque, which is estimated by a disturbance observer. We employ the Fourier series expansion to extract the periodic components of disturbance torque associated with the crank angle, which corresponds to the average pedaling torque. A conditional recursive least squares method is then used to estimate the parameters of the load torque model. Finally, the instantaneous pedaling torque is obtained based on the disturbance observer and the estimated load torque. We confirmed the validity of the proposed method by simulations and experiments. Our method can also be applied to a normal bicycle by replacing its front wheel with a motorized wheel.</p>
