This study aimed to investigate the structural behavior of the steel–concrete connection under monotonic loading, utilizing different types of concrete. Both experiment and finite element analysis under the same conditions were performed. First, three specimens with embedded steel anchors were cast using three different concrete materials, which were ordinary Portland cement concrete, geopolymer concrete, and prepacked concrete. The pull-out test was performed to observe the failure modes of each specimen occurring in the form of cracking, crushing, and other forms of concrete failure. The load–displacement relationship of the structures was measured so that the ultimate capacity could be determined. Second, finite element analysis using finite element code, COM3D employed the same experimental conditions and was carried out to observe the nonlinear behavior of structural concrete and verify the pull-out test results. In both the experiment and analysis, the highest ultimate tensile capacity was obtained from ordinary Portland cement concrete, followed by prepacked concrete. The geopolymer concrete showed the lowest ultimate capacity. Load–displacement relationship obtained from the experiment and analysis showed a similar trend. The difference in stiffness attributed to the interface between steel and each concrete type could be observed. In the experiment, the ordinary Portland cement concrete and prepacked concrete exhibited shear failure behavior; however, geopolymer concrete showed splitting tensile failure. On the other hand, the analysis results showed splitting tensile failure in all cases.

Accelerated development of infrastructure has necessitated the use of sustainable binding materials with a low carbon footprint. This study aims to investigate the impact of fly ash content on the mechanical properties of a self-compacting geopolymer mortar (SCGM). The SCGM properties such as dry density, compressive strength, stress-strain relationship, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio are investigated. The results show that an increase in the fly ash to sand ratio (FA/ S) with a decrease in the volume of water to a volume of powder ratio (Vw/Vp) and the superplasticizer to powder ratio (Sp/P) positively affected the compressive strength of SCGM. The maximum 28 d compressive strength of the SCGM mix was 39 MPa with an FA/S of 1.0, Vw/Vp of 0.94, and Sp/P of 2%. The stress-strain relationship shows that the NaOH molarity and FA/S had a strong influence on the stiffness and compressive strength of the SCGM. A conservative mathematical expression is proposed to predict the Young's modulus of the SCGM based on the compressive strength, and it ranged from 5.63 GPa to 10.20 GPa, which is lower than the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concrete proposed by the ACI 318; however, Poisson's ratio is within the range of OPC concrete. The stiffness of the SCGM ranged from 25% to 55% at the ultimate strain compared to the initial stiffness. The increase in the FA/S ratio from 0.5 to 1.0 resulted in an increase in the SCGM strain, indicating an increase in flexibility. A mathematical model to predict the total stress for SCGM is proposed based on the initial stiffness and the corresponding total strain with the formulation of fracture parameters based on the concept of the elastoplastic fracture model of OPC concrete.

The mechanical properties of both ordinary concrete and less binder concrete are examined in terms of uni-axial compression, shear and cyclic compression under tri-axial condition. The uni-axial compressive strength decreased with decrease of mortar volume. Decrease of shear resistance was not proportional to decrease of mortar. However, cohension with assumption of 35degree of internal friction was clearly affected by mortar volume. The strain distribution suggested that fracture of concrete started from upper to lower. Mohr's circles of the materials on the way to segmentation implied that the mechanical properties of both concrete and gravels can be estimated with single method. According to these experimental facts, the mechanism of segmentation of bridge deck was described.

In 2019, the Kanto-Koshin area and the Tohoku area suffered devastating damages from floods and sediment disasters caused by the record-breaking heavy rainfall with Typhoon No. 19 (Hagibis). In the same year, the heavy rainfall caused severe damage in northern part of Kyushu-Island such as Saga Prefecture, as well as the wind and rain disaster caused by Typhoon No. 15 (Faxai) in Chiba Prefecture. These disasters also highlighted the danger of a series of disaster factors that could cause extensive damage in large areas with the combinations. It is one of the missions of JSCE to compile and disseminate lessons from disasters in Japan for solving future challenging issues in managing infrastructures and mitigating disaster damages. This special issue on the storm and flood damage 2019 in Japan includes valuable information of the disasters in 2019 from different disciplinary points of view, aiming to contribute the growth and development of interdisciplinary academic fields of civil and environmental engineering.

This study presents fatigue life prediction of steel-concrete joint system based on the experiments of wind turbine model subjected to uniaxial or bi-axial vibration. The wind turbine model was tied to the biaxial shake table, then was vibrated at most 200,000 cycle to induce fatigue damage of concrete in joint system. The model subjected to bi-axial vibration showed rapid increase of horizontal displacement at tower when the number of vibration was about 2/3 or half of the one subjected to uniaxial vibration. Several particular cracks were observed at the cross section of pedestal and footing after the test. The ultimate capacity of the model was estimated by fatigue strength of concrete estimated by JSCE standard. The number of vibration during the variation of input amplitude was converted to the equivalent number by Miner's low. The S-N diagram for uniaxial vibration obtained in this study showed good agreement of S-N diagram for ordinary concrete.
