This study proposes a novel method for managing surplus soil in urban construction projects by investigating the use of banana leaf powder (BLP) as an eco-friendly and efficient mud-soil stabilizer. This study is pioneering in its focus on the use of an agricultural waste product, BLP, as an alternative to conventional methods that frequently rely on cement or lime, which pose environmental concerns owing to their high alkalinity and carbon emissions. BLP, derived from dried and pulverized banana leaves, traditionally used in various industries, was evaluated for its suitability as a stabilizer against orange peel biopolymer (OBP) and fly ash (FA). The findings of this study are groundbreaking. BLP's water absorption capacity, Wab, although lower than that of OBP, was significantly higher than that of FA, demonstrating its potential as a mud soil stabilizer. BLP increased the compaction and strength of the treated clay, whereas OBP made it more challenging to compact the clay owing to gelatinization. The ease of compaction with BLP is attributed to the absorption of free water into the pores of the particles. These results suggest that differences in the stabilizer's water absorption mechanism affect the effectiveness of the post-treatment compaction process on the treated soil. An analysis of the impact of water absorption capacity on the cone index, qc, revealed a material-independent relationship between the parameter β (=Wab × A, where A denotes stabilizer addition content) and qc for BLP and FA. This is because, in contrast to OBP, BLP and FA did not gelatinize the free water that was not absorbed by the stabilizer and remained in the same form within the treated clay. This indicates that understanding the water absorption capacity and mechanism of organic- or inorganic-based stabilizers is important for predicting the strength of treated soil. The same relationship between β and qc holds true for the hybrid-treated clay using both BLP and FA, with β considered to be the sum of β for both BLP and FA. Furthermore, this study innovatively addresses the concern of BLP decay in treated soil by creating a hybrid stabilizer with FA and conducting experiments to accelerate BLP decay using fungal mycelia. These experiments revealed that the hybrid-treated clay exhibited a more gradual decrease in carbon content and stabilized pH levels, implying that FA could inhibit decay by fungal mycelia, improving the BLP-treated soil's long-term durability. These findings suggest that agricultural wastes with high organic content can be effectively used for soil stabilization and ground improvement in civil engineering construction and maintenance projects by combining inorganic materials and taking advantage of their properties, such as high water absorbency. This can address the issues (such as high alkalinity and high carbon dioxide emissions) associated with cement- and lime-based stabilizers, which were previously widely used.

The buckling potential of continuously welded rails poses a significant risk for traffic accidents. This risk has become more pronounced owing to global warming. In ballasted tracks, lateral ballast resistance plays a pivotal role in counteracting rail buckling forces. Traditionally, this resistance has been assessed through single -sleeper pullout or push tests (SSPTs). However, the efficacy of SSPTs is limited due to their labor-intensive nature, necessitating individual sleeper evaluations. Moreover, earthquakes can reduce lateral ballast resistance across a wide area, highlighting the need for a methodology that enables more rapid and extensive surveys for the early restoration of train operations after an earthquake. To address these problems, this study introduced a dynamic method that can rapidly and continuously measure the lateral ballast resistance on a laboratory scale. First, 1/9scale track models were introduced in the laboratory using scaled ballast, sleepers, rails, and fasteners. The reliability of the track model response in an unusual situation in which the sleeper was loaded sideways without unfastening the sleepers and rails was confirmed through comparison with the results of the numerical models. Second, a vibrator that could dynamically load the scaled tracks sideways while moving on rails was developed. The vibrator contains a pair of unbalanced flywheels that rotate in different directions at the same speed. The system can produce a simple harmonic dynamic excitation only in the lateral direction and transmit it to the rails. The excitation force generated by the vibrator can be modulated by altering the rotational frequency f. Finally, using a vibrator, the differences in the dynamic responses of several track models with different lateral stabilities were examined. Different lateral stabilities were achieved by setting different ballast densities and ballastretaining wall positions in the track model. The test results demonstrated that cyclic loads were successfully applied to the track models in a dynamic manner using a vibrator while the sleepers and rails were fastened. The maximum unidirectional displacement, or single amplitude (ds), of the examined sleeper was determined from the accelerogram of the recorded accelerations. The dynamic responses of the track models were proposed to remain within reversible limits. Therefore, the proposed dynamic method can be used for non-destructive investigations. Moreover, the ds value of the sleeper resonated at an f value of approximately 60 Hz. This observation can be related to the natural frequencies of the combined systems of the track models and vibrators. Finally, the ratio of ds to the maximum one-sided displacement (single amplitude of the displacement) of the vibrator, dv, with respect to the same f (R) was calculated. The results demonstrate that the peak value of R decreases with increasing lateral stability. This indicates that variations in lateral stability can be determined based on the evaluation of R.

<p> In this study, a series of laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the drainage properties of the polymer mixed soils. The results showed that, although the drainage tendency differs depending on the type of soil and polymer used in the experiments, short-term drainage performance improves under certain conditions. It was also found that this short-term drainage performance can be evaluated by using the activity of the original soil. Furthermore, consolidation test results showed that coefficient of consolidation and coefficient of permeability of the polymer mixed soils were lower than those of the subject soil. This was inconsistent with the short-term drainage performance improves observed in the simple drainage test. The short-term drainage considered to be the discharge of excess water that was not taken up during floc formation.</p>

Recently, a technology was developed in Japan to accelerate the carbonation of alkaline construction sludge and reduce its alkalinity. Alkaline construction sludge is treated in advance using a paper sludge ash-based stabilizer (PSAS) so that it becomes granular and well aerated. Subsequently, CO2 gas is injected from the bottom to the top of the treated sludge layer in the underground pit. This technology can reduce the pH of alkaline sludge within short periods; however, the completion period of pH neutralization has often been predicted empirically. This may be due to the combined effects of density, water content, particle size, PSAS amount in the sludge, and CO2 concentration in the accelerated carbonation on the pH neutralization process. However, there have been few studies on how these factors affect the pH neutralization and CO2 capture of PSAS-treated alkaline sludges subjected to accelerated carbonation. Therefore, in this study, the effects of several accelerated carbonation factors on neutralization and CO2 capture from alkaline sludge were experimentally investigated. PSAS-treated alkaline sludges with different densities, water contents, particle sizes, and amounts of PSAS were cured in incubators with controlled CO2 concentrations. Based on the pH measurements, the pH neutralization completion period (tN) was evaluated for each alkaline sludge sample. The test results revealed that tN increased with increasing dry density and particle size and decreasing CO2 concentration. The results also suggest that tN increases with increasing amounts of PSAS. However, the water content had a more significant effect on tN than the PSAS amount. There may be an optimum water content for pH neutralization if conditions other than the water content are the same. From the results of the carbonate content evaluation, the amounts of CO2 captured in each specimen (mCO2) and mCO2 at tN were determined for each alkaline sludge sample. The results revealed that the density, water content, particle size of the alkaline sludge, and CO2 concentration in the incubators did not significantly affect the amount of CO2 captured by the sludge (mCO2) upon the completion of pH neutralization. However, the amount of PSAS significantly affects the captured CO2 content. A higher amount of PSAS caused mCO2 to increase at tN.

<p>Construction sludge is often modified in the process of generation or intermediate treatment, and the modified sludge often shows high alkalinity. Recently, as one of the methods to reduce the pH of such alkali construction sludge, the modified construction sludge is placed in a pool and aerated with CO<sub>2</sub> gas from the bottom to the top. However, it is difficult to monitor the progress of neutralization of the modified sludge and to predict the completion time.</p><p>In this study, we conducted a column-type neutralization test in which CO<sub>2</sub> gas was aired into a cylindrical specimen and simulated the test results to investigate efficient neutralization conditions by predicting the progress of neutralization and completion time. The results showed that the amount of CO<sub>2</sub> input that does not contribute to neutralization could be suppressed by changing the flow rate in the middle of the flow rate for a constant flow rate condition, while keeping the completion time of neutralization the same.</p>

The lateral resistance of a ballast bed significantly affects the lateral stability of ballasted railway tracks. Hence, a precise evaluation of the lateral ballast resistance is essential for predicting rail buckling potential. Differential ballast settlement can cause the sleeper bottom to separate from the ballast, thereby causing the sleeper to become an "unsupported sleeper" suspended from the rail. The gap between the ballast and sleeper bottom results in zero frictional force at the bottom, which reduces the lateral ballast resistance. However, sleepers near unsupported sleepers are subjected to the additional weight of the unsupported sleepers and the rail load borne by the unsupported sleepers. Consequently, they become over-supported. Additional loads may change the lateral ballast resistance of the supported sleepers. Previous studies did not consider the combined effects of supported and unsupported sleepers on the lateral ballast resistance. Therefore, in this study, experiments are conducted on 1/5-scale ballasted track models to investigate these combined effects. Analytical methods for evaluating the lateral ballast resistance when panels incorporate both supported and unsupported sleepers are presented. Pullout tests conducted on panels incorporating supported and unsupported sleepers reveal that unsupported sleepers adversely affect the lateral ballast resistance. The lateral ballast resistance decreases as the number of unsupported sleepers increases, irrespective of sleeper type. Moreover, the analytical results reveal that the lateral ballast resistance of the panel is underestimated when only the decrease in the lateral ballast resistance due to unsupported sleepers is considered. Meanwhile, the analyses considering the combined effects of supported, unsupported, and over-supported sleepers provide reasonable estimates of the lateral ballast resistance, similar to the experimental results. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential of using a paper sludge ash-based stabilizer (PSAS) to improve the properties of sand proposed to be used as a backfill material around underground pipes. The swelling potential and strength of the sand treated with PSAS are investigated by conducting a series of laboratory tests. Similar tests are conducted on sand treated with ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Swelling potential tests show that the PSAS-treated sand with a water content of 0% show significant expansion during soaking, similar to the OPC-treated sand. However, the test results reveal that an appropriate moisture content of the PSAS-treated sand reduces its potential for expansion, depending on the duration of its temporary placement at the construction site. Unconfined compression tests show that the compressive strength of the PSAS-treated sand is significantly lower than that of the OPC-treated sand under the same mixing conditions, even though the chemical composition of PSAS is relatively similar to that of OPC. The increase in compressive strength with the curing time is more gradual in the PSAS-treated sand than in the OPC-treated sand, suggesting that the former is easier to reexcavate. X-ray diffraction profiles showed that the formation of calcite is dominant in the PSAS-treated sand, and that berlinite may be an additional contributor to the increase in strength of PSAS-treated sand in the long term.

<p> Development of the seismic design and the seismic countermeasures of the structures supporting railroad ballasted tracks are progressing; development of them for ballasted tracks is also required. In this study, we conducted small-scale model tests to evaluate the mechanism of reduction of the lateral ballast resistance during shaking. The deformation behavior inside the ballast during shaking was photographed and image analysis by PIV was performed; then it was found out that a shear plane was generated in the loading direction from the depth of the bottom of the sleeper. Large shaking table tests were also conducted using a full-scale model to investigate the effect of the seismic countermeasures for ballasted tracks. It was confirmed that both the buckling prevention plates and the ballast retaining wall had high seismic countermeasure effect.</p>

In this study, cyclic loading tests were carried out on model grounds simulating the conditions of track and roadbed in the clayey roadbed section of the Tokaido Shinkansen, in order to verify the mechanism which causes frequent maintenance locations. Effects of the ballast layer thickness and the water intrusion on the track settlement were investigated. The model grounds were set to 1/5 size of the real ones, and based on the field survey results, they were consisted of three layers of ballast, fouled ballast and ballast mixing loam, respectively. The test results show that as the ballast layer thickness (the sum of ballast and fouled layer thickness) decreases, the settlement amount in the initial stage of loading become smaller, but as the saturation degree of the roadbed surface layer increases the settlement rate becomes higher because the earth pressure acting on the roadbed surface become higher and the road surface softens. It was also found that the thicker ballast layer can significantly lower the settlement even though the degree of saturation of the roadbed is increased.
