<p>The provision of information on energy and environmental problems has conventionally been based on the premise that people process information deliberatively and logically. However, it has been pointed out that the conventional methods have limitations, and it is necessary to turn attention to automatic and intuitive information processing. This paper focuses on three information formats, namely, narrative, vivid, and episodic information that can induce automatic and intuitive information processing and aims to examine their potential for use after a cross-sectional review of communication research related to the three formats. Although knowledge about each information format has been accumulated in different fields, it is important to have a bird’s eye view across the fields because there are many common points. The paper classifies the functions of these unconventional information into four categories: motivating processing, inducing simulated experiences, making topics personal, and evoking some emotions. It appears that these functions do not act independently but are interrelated and have different impacts on the receivers from the conventional information. Based on the cross-sectional review, this paper discusses how the four functions of the unconventional information can be utilized in energy communication.</p>

<p>The present study assesses life cycle CO<sub>2</sub> (LCCO<sub>2</sub>) reduction costs of ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) systems with combined use of deep sea water by area considering the natural and social conditions in different areas of Japan. This study considers sea surface temperature, climate, region scale, type of grid power and location as regional conditions. The assessment reveals that the LCCO<sub>2</sub> reduction cost greatly varies from 860 to 323,000 [JPY/t-CO<sub>2</sub>] depending on the areas. Areas where LCCO<sub>2</sub> reduction costs are less than 30,000 [JPY/t-CO<sub>2</sub>] are the medium and large scale remote islands of Okinawa, the Okinawa main island, the largescale remote islands of Kyushu, and the large-scale remote islands of Shikoku, where the installation of OTEC systems are promising. There are the two main reasons for the small LCCO<sub>2</sub> reduction costs in these areas; first, the amount of power generation is large because of the low latitude. Second, the effect of combined use of deep sea water is large because these areas have large cooling demand due to the low latitude or the large regional scale.</p>

<p>The purpose of this study is to examine whether the introduction of solar drying systems contribute to the development of rural community activities in Thailand. In this study, interviews are conducted with six farmer groups who use solar drying systems for their production activities, and the empirical findings from the interviews are used as data for the analysis. The case analysis reveals that the introduction of solar drying systems has the potential to create the following three values. First, its introduction has the potential to motivate community members and bring out their initiative through the improvement of the working environment. The second is the possibility that its introduction may naturally induce learning to improve members’ competence, triggered by a change in drying methods. Third, its introduction has the potential to enhance the sustainability of local communities by strengthening ties within local communities and ensuring succession. More importantly, the use of renewable solar thermal energy realizes the three values mentioned above without the consumption of fossil fuels. This study suggests that the installation of solar drying systems may not only contribute to global environmental sustainability in terms of climate change mitigation, but also to the sustainable development of rural communities in developing countries.</p>

<p>The purpose of this study is to explore how psychological distance may influence public engagement with climate change. We provide proximal or distal information about impacts of climate change with university students, and measure individuals' behavior intention and policy support using a questionnaire survey. Our results suggest that information framed to distal impacts motivate people to support climate change policy.</p>

<p>The present study analyzes economic effects and CO<sub>2</sub> emissions associated with the production of lead acid, nickel metal hydride and lithium ion batteries using input-output analysis. The input vectors for the three different storage batteries are estimated by dividing the existing battery sector of the Japanese input-output table. The economic effects and CO<sub>2</sub> emissions vary reflecting differences in characteristics of the three types of storage batteries.</p>

<p>The present study analyzes the economic effects of waste power generation systems using the Japanese input-output table. The input vector of waste power generation is estimated based on open information such as the financial data of Clean Authority of Tokyo. The estimated input vector is given as final demand to calculate the direct and indirect output caused by waste power generation. The analysis reveals that the business service sector, which accounts for 40 percent of the direct and indirect output, has the largest economic effects because waste disposal plants outsource many operation and management works.</p>

<p>The present study analyses the life cycle CO<sub>2</sub> reduction costs of woody biomass district heating systems for typical consumers. The results indicate that district heating systems are more cost-effective than individual systems for almost all the consumers. District heating systems could be more cost-effective in the case of consumers with higher building density and higher heat demands, especially hot water demand.</p>

<p>The purpose of this study is to find out natural and social conditions to effectively reduce CO<sub>2</sub> emissions by installing ground source heat pump systems (GSHPs). This study estimates life cycle CO<sub>2</sub> reduction potential of GSHPs for air-conditioning in office buildings under various natural and social conditions. Six hundred and forty possible patterns are generated by combining the following four conditions: climate, air-conditioning systems used at present, scales of office buildings and CO<sub>2</sub> emission factors of grid electricity used. Based on the CO<sub>2</sub> reduction potential of each pattern, this study analyzes patterns under which the GSHPs installation can effectively reduce CO<sub>2</sub> emission. The analysis finds that the installation of GSHPs can reduce CO<sub>2</sub> emission for about 40% (250 patterns) of all the 640 patterns. In particular, the GSHPs installation allows for higher CO<sub>2</sub> reduction in patterns that meet following conditions: (1) when GSHPs substitute absorption chiller-heaters in the area where the CO<sub>2</sub> emission factors of grid electricity are low and (2) when GSHPs substitute air source heat pumps in cold areas. In addition, sensitivity analysis is conducted considering a decrease in CO<sub>2</sub> emission factors of grid electricity and the efficiency improvement of GSHPs in the future.</p>

<p>In Japan, a large share of final energy demand is used for hot water and space heating and cooling in buildings. Therefore, it is important to consider how to meet the heat demand of residential and commercial sectors. Despite the potential benefits of renewable heat technologies, little study has been done to examine the effects of the introduction of them. The objective of the present study is to develop an input-output model for assessing environmental and socio-economic impacts of renewable heat technologies from a life cycle perspective. The developed input-output model covers three renewable heat systems, namely, solar thermal, ground source heat pump and wood boiler systems. Conventional heat systems are also considered for comparison purposes. The new 37 sectors are created and added to the Japanese input-output table for the year 2011. This study employs a mixed-unit input-output model. The output of the operation sectors is expressed in physical terms instead of monetary terms. Building thermal simulation software is used to calculate heat load. We conduct employment impact assessment using the developed input-output model. The results indicate that the introduction of renewable heat technologies induce employment shifts away from the fossil fuel-related sectors towards renewable sectors.</p>

<p>The present study assesses the possibility of spreading renewable power generation using a bottom up linearprogramming model for energy system analysis. The results reveal that an increase in the installed capacity is expected for offshore wind power generation, wave energy conversion, ocean thermal energy conversion and geothermal power generation when considering their co-benefits such as employment creation effects.</p>

<p>Renewable energy generation is zero emission technology. However, CO<sub>2</sub> emission of renewable energy generation plants is emitted from construction stage. We have been conducted analysis of CO<sub>2</sub> emission on construction of renewable energy generation apparatus per generated power. Now, the share of renewable power generation is expected to increase towards CO<sub>2</sub> emission reduction targets. In the near future, renewable power plants will be manufactured using electricity generated from renewable energy sources, so CO<sub>2</sub> emissions per unit of electricity generated will be lower than present levels. In this study, renewable energy power plants calculated the potential for CO<sub>2</sub> emission reduction per generated power using LCA. We used scenarios of 2030 (30% decreased by METI) and 2050 (80% decreased by RITE) in our calculations. Electricity ratio per total CO<sub>2</sub> emission of PV, wind power, wave power, tidal power generation, and ocean thermal energy conversion is calculated as 32%, 21%, 20%, 21% and 14%. CO<sub>2</sub> emissions reductions per electricity generated from renewable energy generation averaged 6% in 2030 and 17% in 2050.</p>

<p>The present study analyses the potential of installing OTEC systems with multi-use deep sea water based on the profitability of the systems. Since the profitability differs depending on the area where the system is installed, it is evaluated considering the natural and socio-economic conditions of the installation site. The results reveal that the systems installed in remote islands of Okinawa is economically viable.</p>

<p>The present study aims to estimate CO<sub>2</sub> emissions from decommissioning of solar and wind power plants. Using a hybrid method that combines process and input-output analyses, the CO<sub>2</sub> emission is calculated based on an average decommissioning cost, which is estimated from the detailed construction cost data for different types of power plants. For a solar photovoltaic power plant, the estimated CO<sub>2</sub> emission at the demolition stage is 2.1 g-CO<sub>2</sub>/kWh (tentative value), which accounts for about 4% of life cycle CO<sub>2</sub> emission including the construction, operation and maintenance stages.</p>

<p>This study focuses on the possibility of promoting pro-environmental behavior by improving psychological proximity to photovoltaic (PV) systems. An intervention experiment is carried out using a digital signage at a nursery school where PV systems are installed, and pre- and post-questionnaire surveys are conducted to evaluate the influences of the intervention. Statistical analysis of questionnaire surveys suggests that the intervention should have effects on improving psychological proximity and promoting pro-environmental behavior.</p>

<p>The objective of the present study is to reveal the influences of domestic communication on energy conservation behavior in daily life. The Ministry of the Environment, Japan implemented the" Uchi-Eco-Shindan"Project in 2011, which provides households with environmental consulting services. In the present study, questionnaire surveys including questions about the situation of domestic communication (e.g. whether they talk about home-appliance replacement for energy conservation with their family members after "Uchi-EcoShindan") are conducted with 613 households that were provided with "Uchi-Eco-Shindan." The available data (254 out of 613 households) is analyzed using statistical methods. The analysis finds the possibility that households'electricity consumption after "Uchi-Eco-Shindan" is influenced by the two types of domestic communication, that is, to talk about replacement of appliances to reduce electricity consumption and to warn each other about energy conservation behavior. The present study suggests that domestic communication promotes energy conservation behavior in daily life, and concludes that more detailed analysis is necessary in the future.</p>

<p>The present study assesses the CO<sub>2</sub> reduction potential of solar water heating systems (natural circulation) for single-family houses considering the natural and social conditions of local areas in Japan. The life cycle CO<sub>2</sub> reduction is estimated by municipality when installing solar water heaters instead of conventional water heaters (i.e. oil, LPG, natural gas and electricity) used at present. The estimation results reveal that the CO<sub>2</sub> reduction potential greatly varies from 156 to 589 [kg-CO<sub>2</sub>/household/yr] depending on the local areas. The CO<sub>2</sub> reduction rate is also in the wide range of 11.1% to 28.7%. The total CO<sub>2</sub> reduction potential in Japan is estimated to be 6.73 million [t-CO<sub>2</sub>/yr]. Local CO<sub>2</sub> reduction potential is mainly affected by the three local factors: fuel-types of conventional water heaters, feed water temperature and air temperature. The local areas where electric water heaters are widely used (e.g. Chugoku region) have high CO<sub>2</sub> reduction potential. Similarly, the local areas with low water temperature have high CO<sub>2</sub> reduction potential (e.g. Hokuriku region). However, when air temperature is extremely low, the CO<sub>2</sub> reduction potential is small because solar water heaters do not operate due to freezing (e.g. Hokkaido region).</p>
