In recent years, public information has been disseminated using Yasashii Nihongo in various situations. On the other hand, changes in the norms and values of the Japanese language due to this movement have caused tensions and conflicts among native Japanese speakers. This paper focuses on such tensions and conflicts, clarifying how the values of “yasashisa (thoughtfulness)” are negotiated. Specifically, the paper analyzes narratives extracted from interviews conducted with Japanese students who engaged in collaborative workshops with international students in beginner-level Japanese. Based on the theory of situational boundary work and employing the concept of distantiation, the analysis elucidates two key aspects: 1) the definition of a boundary and 2) the relationship between boundaries and “yasashisa (thoughtfulness).” The analysis reveals that Yasashii Nihongo causes some sense of discomfort to native Japanese speakers. However, the interviewees’ subjective experience of discomfort varies, showing different types of boundaries elicited by various distantiation forms. Consequently, the meaning of “yasashisa (thoughtfulness)” assumes an entirely different form and, in certain instances, occupies a position of direct opposition. We can conclude from these results that the nature of “yasashisa (thoughtfulness)” in Yasashii Nihongo can significantly vary depending on the distancing practices that establish the boundaries, notwithstanding the uniformity of the language boundaries.

The author’s research team has been conducting “Libardry” a game-type library guidance program to learn how to use university libraries. However, in the fiscal year 2020, university libraries had to be closed due to the influence of preventing the spread of the new coronavirus. Under these circumstances, many university libraries attempted to provide library guidance online. In the same way, the author’s research team tried to create a library guidance “Libardry Form” which does not rely on any paid tools or special skills. Based on the research team’s prior experiences with game-type library guidance, we conducted an exploratory study to understand the game’s impact on library learning. Concretely, for a trial survey of the features of the “Libardry Form” we recruited eleven university students during classes taught by the first author and thirty-one participants from the general public via SNS. After playing the game, we asked the participants to fill out a questionnaire. Thirty-three respondents (78.6%) preferred our game-type library guidance to the more common video-type guidance. We also asked the eleven university students who experienced the game to cooperate with us for additional pre- and post-surveys and analyzed the results of the eight valid responses we received. We found that it was difficult to recognize the influence of the “Libardry Form” on sophomore and junior students who had used university libraries before. Contrastingly, although it is not possible to generalize the results due to the small number of valid responses, the results indicate that the “Libardry Form” may improve the understanding of freshmen who have little experience using university libraries.

In recent years, libraries all over the world have faced a radical transition from analog to digital data. This papershows how librarians in Japan have accepted and reacted to this change; we focused on their "networks" and"creativity". First, we analyzed grassroots activities, such as a project called "Anthropomorphizing the NipponDecimal Classification System" in a public library and the "Toshoket", which is an exhibition for librarians andlibrary fans. Next, we focused on librarians' creativity in a gameplay setting. We used a card game as a researchtool and asked librarians to play this game. We analyzed their conversations and found that their creativity emergedas a response to resources or situations in the library. The creativity that emerged in gameplay and in grassrootsnetworks shared a common feature: both constituted a response to the existing environment and resources. Basedon Engeström's concept of "mycorrhizae", we concluded that librarians' creativity and networks are enabled by thesymbiotic relationships found in libraries.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a joint workshop between international students and
Japanese students who participated in the teacher training course. The first half of the workshop
consisted of ice-breaking activities which emphasized communication using simple Japanese,
facial expressions, and pictures. During the latter half of the workshop, participants created a “4-
frame picture story" as a team. The results of the survey and interview revealed that the
brainstorming activity for the “4-frame picture story" was most difficult for the participants due
to the lack of shared mutual language. The photo-taking activity, on the other hand, was the most enjoyable and it successfully promoted communication between international students and Japanese students, enabling participants to project their thoughts more clearly.Other Link: http://doi.org/10.18880/00013979

In recent years, we have witnessed cases of "gamification" in various social fields, such as education, social welfare, and even ecological problem solving. Within the background of such cases, there seems to be a need for change in the reality of our daily lives. In fact, we can see some cases of gamification occurring in our actual lives. According to Suits (2005), to play game is to engage in "the voluntary attempt to overcome unnecessary obstacles." In daily life, obstacles exist as things to avoid, but in a game context, such obstacles are necessary for our pleasure. Thus, using the method of gamification and introducing the game context, we can change the meaning of various obstacles, and construct alternative meaning to our reality. In this article, we focus on the process in which our reality is reconstructed through the conversation after playing a game-based educational program. Describing how they design their interactions and construct their realities, we aim at finding how games affect our realities. This field of research is RPG-based, and focuses on a user-education program implemented in an academic library, called "Libardry," which is a combination of the word "library" and the title of a popular game, "Wizardry." The program consists of two parts: an RPG-based education program and a group discussion (Flick, 2002). The participants were six university students, two females and four males. We focused on conversations in a group discussion and analyzed them to determine how the participants, staff members, and students, elicit meaning from difficulties when accessing library resources as artifacts. As a result, we determined how participants change their meaning collaboratively. In their conversations, they stated that difficulties are "unnecessary obstacles to overcome" for pleasure. Game context not only visualizes the existence of artifacts from the viewpoint of "pleasure," it also opens up the field of meaning negotiation for people in various fields.

Recently, academic libraries in japan have been devoted to educational activities, especially for information literacies. In this paper, we consider what the new information literacies are, and how we should design the learning environment for them. At first, we begin from reviewing the "new literacies", and clarifying the notion of "information literacies" in them. Next, we introduce the new learning theory "Connected Learning", and consider about the effectiveness of game-based learning. Finally, from the case study of a Role-Playing-Game (RPG)-based learning program, we conclude that:

(1)"Connected Learning" theory support us to see the information literacies not for individual students but for everyone.

(2)The game-based learning is a one way to offer students the connected learning environment.

Recently, the community activities implemented by universities have been brought to public attention. While various public sectors encourage the regional activities of universities, little attention has been given to the learning that occurs during them.
In this study, we focus on the learning that occurs in regional activities, designing the project around the students' learning environment. We begin with a discussion about the meaningful aspects of the regional activities of students. From the sociological viewpoint, we found a problem with the hometown-loving attitude of youths: while they say they love their hometown, they are really expressing love for only their family and friends, ignoring their neighbors. Therefore, we need to offer these youths the opportunity to encounter the local residents of their communities without feeling fearful.
In order to create these opportunities, we designed a workshop, the TOKIWA Machinaka Lab (TOKIWA street lab). The objective of the project is to provide an environment in which students can bring their ideas from the workshops into their regional communities, sharing specific and practical work with local residents. As a result of sharing in their activities, students and locals are better able to communicate with each other.Other Link: http://www.tokiwa.ac.jp/tokiwa/publication/human02/pdf/ningen31_2.pdf

Recently, the media environment has transformed considerably; instead of "mass media," formation of public opinion is now influenced by "social media." Thus, we must consider instituting new media literacy education to correspond with the new media environment. From our perspective, the most important feature of any media literacy education should be its ethical aspects. First, we considered how ethical aspects are positioned in the discussion of media literacy and found the term "practical moral knowledge" to be worth our attention. Next, to apply practical moral knowledge to new media literacy, we investigated Our Space, finding it necessary to focus on the ethical strategies we use in our everyday lives-both online and offline. From the results, we concluded that introducing new media literacy is important for shifting the existing paradigm within Japanese language education.

As audience to a piece of media text, the individual reader can sometimes create their own story from the text, shifting to the position of producer. How does the shift from audience to producer take place? This article reports on fieldwork conducted at a cafe space created for youth activities. Specifically, this study focuses on the interactive behavioral process that occurred when a girl and the researcher collaborated together to draw a picture in the `Rakugaki-Keijiban' exchange notebook.
The research location was the Contemporary Art Gallery at the Art Tower Mito. Every year for a period of one month, the Contemporary Art Gallery establishes a cafe space as an artistic program for youth educational activities. The `Rakugaki-Keijiban' exchange notebook was one of the activities to promote youth exchanges.
The participant was a grade six elementary school girl who is an enthusiastic reader of the `Ribbon' and `Ciao' Japanese comics for girls. Together with the researcher, who is also an avid reader of Japanese girl comics, the girl drew pictures of a girl and a boy resembling comic characters. During the interaction with the girl, the researcher had no educational objectives and exerted absolutely no control over the interaction. The researcher took field notes during the interactive behavioral process for later analysis.
The field notes were analyzed according to the reflexive ethnography approach in order to elucidate events emerging within the interactive behavioral process and events accompanying shifts in the girl's position. The results indicate three important aspects in the shift from audience to producer.
(1) Creating one's own story, using an existing genre through, for example, parody and pastiche.
(2) Existence of a community that shares the genre.
(3) Protection of one's own domain.
By drawing on an existing genre and sharing one's own story with another person, we can create a story with the other person. (1) In this way, a community sharing the genre is constructed. (2) However, that alone does not lead to the shift from audience to producer. In order to realize such a shift, it is necessary to protect one's own domain from other people. (3) Thus, the shift from audience to producer is achieved. This study suggests that creativity and passivity are inseparable aspects of the audience. -

Avid readers of a particular genre of writing may find themselves stigmatized for their reading habits. Terms such as `maniac' or `mania' may be used to describe such people and their behavior. How do the stigmatized readers respond? How do they feel about the genre and about themselves as people considered fanatical by others? This article reports the results of an analysis of a conversation in which members of a particular community of practitioners discussed the meanings of terms associated with their reading habits and with them as readers. Specifically, this study looks at members of the media fanzine community?a community of people who read, write, and share information on a specific topic?and their stigmatization.
Subjects were two female Japanese university graduates who could be described as members of the media fanzine community. Together with the researcher, who was also a self-described member of the same community and with whom the subjects were previously acquainted, they met informally for a discussion. During the course of conversation, the researcher guided discussion toward the meanings of the terms associated with their reading habits. Other than encouraging discussion of these terms, the conversation was not controlled in any way; the three women spoke openly about their favorite books and fanzines. The 90-minute conversation was tape-recorded for later analysis. The researcher also took notes.
Drawing on ethnomethodology, conversation analysis was performed in order to determine the women's general stance toward being media fanzine community members. Analysis focused on the meaning and sociological implications of the women's use of the term `mania.' It was suggested that when a person is considered to be `maniac,' he or she is stigmatized, creating a negative connotation. However, by embracing the term, the negative connotation is neutralized in the minds of the stigmatized individuals. By identifying themselves with the term, they create a self-enforced category.
The term `mania' or `maniac' was used by the subjects when they felt a conflict between their own reading habits and the general public's attitudes. For instance, suppose they were still fans of comics when they entered university. When they realized the gap between conventional thinking (i.e. college students should read material of higher literary merit) and their own reading habits at that time (i.e. avid reading of comics), they used the term `mania,' and they can conceptualize this gap in daily activities like conversations. The findings of this study suggest that the meaning of reading is created and maintained in our daily activities. Traditional reading studies typically proceed on the notion that meaning derives from society and culture. This study suggests that daily activity may also play a role and is thus a legitimate focus for further reading research. -
