Brine-induced microtexture formation in upper amphibolite to granulite facies lower crust is investigated using a garnet–hornblende (Grt-Hbl) selvage developed along a planar crack discordantly cutting the gneissic structure of an orthopyroxene-bearing gneiss (central Sør Rondane Mountains, East Antarctica). The Cl contents of hornblende and biotite, K contents of hornblende and the thickness of relatively Na-rich rims of plagioclase decrease with distance from the center of the Grt–Hbl selvage (inferred position of the crack). Biotite and hornblende arrangement defining the gneissic structure can be traced into the selvage, suggesting that the wall-rock was overprinted by the selvage formation. Addition and loss of elements to the wall-rock was examined using Zr as an immobile element. Trace elements that tend to be mobile in brines rather than in melts are added to the wall-rock, indicating that the Grt–Hbl selvage was formed by the advection of NaCl–KCl brine into a thin crack. Plagioclase in the wall-rock shows a discontinuous drop of anorthite content at the rim, indicating that coupled dissolution–reprecipitation took place and the grain boundaries were once wet. Trace element concentrations in the wall-rock minerals decrease with distance from the crack, and, in most cases show exponentially decreasing/increasing profiles depending on the elements. These profiles are best modelled by a diffusion equation, suggesting that the wet grain–boundary diffusion in the wall-rock minerals controlled the observed mass transfer and resulted in dissolution–reprecipitation of mineral rims.

Plagioclase is a major constituent mineral in the Earth's crust. We prepared the samples of polycrystalline labradorite and measured compressional wave velocities (Vp) and shear (Vs) wave velocities. Ultrasonic measurements on these samples were conducted up to 1.0 GPa in a temperature range of 25-800°C in a piston cylinder apparatus.

P-wave velocities (Vp) in ultra-high temperature granulites (UHT) were measured up to 1.0 Gpa from 25°C to 400°C with a piston-cylinder-type high-pressure apparatus. Rocks measured are meta-igneous UHT rocks collected from Mount Riiser-Larsen, Amundsen Bay, Napier Complex. Core rock samples 14 mm in diameter and 12 mm long were subjected to high-pressure experiments. All rocks show a rapid increase of Vp at low pressure up to 0.5 Gpa and nearly constant Vp at higher pressures. The Vp values measured at 1.0 Gpa and 400°C are 7.17 km/s for a metapyroxenite, 6.93 km/s, 6.88 km/s for mafic granulites and 6.17 km/s for an orthopyroxene felsic gneiss. A well-defined correlation exists between Vp and the SiO_2 content of the rocks, which is expressed as Vp (km/s)=-0.051SiO_2+9.85 at 1.0 Gpa and 25℃. The Vp values measured for the Napier mafic granulites are comparable to those of the Mizuho lower crustal layer (6.95 km/s of Vp at depth from 33 to 40 km; A. Ikami et al, Mem. Natl Inst. Polar Res., Ser. C, 15, 69, 1984). The present results suggest that the lower crust in the Mizuho Plateau is probably composed of mafic granulites (garnet-free) rather than garnet-bearing rocks. The higher pressure in Liitzow-Holm Complex overlie the lower pressure rocks (Napier Complex). The double-thickened crustal model in which peak metamorphic pressure increases with depth can't explain the inversion of metamorphic pressure across the crust. We suggest that the Liitzow-Holm Complex was exhumed tectonically upon the Napier Complex after the Pan-African continental collision between the Napier Complex and Dronning Maud Land.

The Mt. Riiser-Larsen area of the Napier Complex, East Antarctica, is underlain by various kinds of ultrahigh-temperature (UHT) metamorphic rocks such as orthopyroxene felsic gneiss, garnet felsic gneiss, garnet-sillimanite gneiss, mafic gneiss and meta-ultramafic rocks. On the basis of the mode of occurrence and petrography, the garnet felsic gneisses are further divided into garnet felsic gneiss I (garnet-poor type) and II (garnet-rich type), the mafic gneisses into quartz-free and -bearing types, and the metaultramafic rocks into phlogopite-free and -bearing types. Bulk rock chemical analyses for the major, minor and rare earth elements (REEs) demonstrate that (1) both the garnetsillimanite gneiss and garnet felsic gneiss II are of sedimentary origin such as mudstone and sandstone, respectively, and (2) other rocks are of igneous origin, as follows: i) the orthopyroxene felsic gneiss and garnet felsic gneiss I are chemically comparable with CIPW normative tonalite to granodiorite and granite, respectively, of which the former also exhibits a calc-alkaline compositional variation with a REE signature comparable to the Archaean TTG (tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite); ii) the quartz-free and quartz-bearing mafic gneisses have been derived from flat or slightly LREE-depleted and LREE-enriched tholeiitic basalts, respectively; iii) phlogopite-free and phlogopite-bearing meta-ultramafic rocks have been derived from depleted mantle peridotites and komatiitic rocks, respectively, of which the latter shows a magmatic compositional variation controlled by addition or subtraction of only olivine. These chemical features reveal that the various kinds of original rocks are intermingled in the Riiser-Larsen area, which is important for understanding the site of development of original rocks in the Napier Complex.

The summer party of the 38th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (1996-97) performed field work in the Mt. Riiser-Larsen area of the Archaean Napier Complex, Enderby Land, East Antarctica. The area is underlain by various kinds of metamorphic rocks and unmetamorphosed intrusive rocks. Of these, the metamorphic rocks are tentatively divided into the layered gneiss series, massive gneiss series, and transitional gneiss series. The layered gneiss series, occurring in the central to northwestern part of the area, is characterized by layering structure composed of several types of garnet felsic gneiss with subordinate amounts of orthopyroxene felsic gneiss, pelitic and mafic gneisses, impure quartzite, and metamorphosed banded iron formation. The massive gneiss series is predominant in the southern to southeastern part and consists mainly of massive orthopyroxene felsic gneiss, in which the layering structure is not conspicuous and the lithology is rather monotonous. The transitional gneiss series is developed between the layered and massive gneiss series, in which metamorphosed anorthosite and ultramafic rocks occur characteristically as thin layers or blocks or pods. Metamorphic foliation, which is almost always parallel to the layering structure, strikes NE-SW to E-W and dips at moderate to gentle angles (20-40°) to the south or southeast. The mineral associations indicate that the majority of the metamorphic rocks could belong to the high temperature granulite facies at metamorphic temperature higher than 1000℃. Unmetamorphosed doleritic intrusive rocks, so-called Amundsen Dikes, intrude throughout the area, striking N-S and NE-SW. Furthermore, there are many shear zones, following preexisting structures such as dike margins, in which the gneisses and dikes have been sheared to mylonites or pseudotachylite-like rocks.

Rock Velocities at Atmospheric Pressure and Room Temperature in Tanzawa Plutonic Rocks from Central Japan

The Tanzawa plutonic complex, which is composed mainly of tonalite with minor quartz gabbro and gabbro, is exposed at the northern end of the Izu-Bonin island-arc. It is interpreted as exposed middle crust of the Izu-Bonin arc which was uplifted during the collision of Izu-Bonin arc with the Honshu arc in Japan. Determination of elastic wave velocity in these rocks is crucial to interpret the seismic velocity structure of the Izu-Bonin arc. Compressional-wave (Vp) and shear-wave (Vs) velocities from Tanzawa plutonic rocks were measured at 1 atm and room temperature. The P-wave and S-wave velocities are strongly dependent upon the lithology : gabbro (Vp=4.89-5.44km/s, Vs=2.49-2.86km/s), quartz gabbro (Vp=4.90-4.97km/s, Vs=2.39-2.50km/s), tonalite (Vp=4.25-4.71km/s, Vs=2.40-2.48km/s), granitic aplite (Vp=3.82km/s, Vs=2.11km/s). The Tanzawa plutonic rocks show a positive correlation between elastic-wave velocity and density, and a rough positive correlation between Vp and Vs. Theoretical Voigt-Reuss-Hill average Vp values were also calculated for tonalites, quartz gabbro and gabbros at 1.0 GPa pressure. Theoretical Vp is about 2km/s faster than measured Vp at atmospheric pressure. The measured Vp of plutonic rocks (4.25-5.44km/s) is faster than the refraction-determined P-wave velocity in 2km-thick uppermost crust (2.5-4.0km/s) of the Izu-Bonin island arc, implying that plutonic rocks are not present at 0-2km depth. Theoretical Vp values of tonalite and quartz gabbro are consistent with the velocity structure of middle crust (6.0-6.7km/s velocity). The theoretical Vp of hornblende gabbro (7.0-7.2km/s) can explain the lower crustal P-wave velocity structure (7.1-7.2km/s). The high P-wave velocity (7.2-7.3km/s) in the lowermost crust implies a high content of orthopyroxene (more than 20%).

Sapphirine-bearing silica-undersaturated granulites from Forefinger Point, Enderby Land, East Antarctica: Evidence for a clockwise P-T path?

Sapphirine-bearing silica-undersaturated granulites from Forefinger Point in Enderby Land, East Antarctica, preserve a variety of reaction textures suggestive of the prograde segment of the P-T evolution followed by nearly isothermal decompression. The granulites are composed of sapphirine, orthopyroxene, cordierite, garnet, spinel, corundum, K-feldspar, biotite and accessory zircon. Petrographical characteristics are i) spinel and corundum occur only as inclusions in sapphirine, ii) relict cordierite and biotite are included in the corundum, and iii) the sapphirine is locally in direct contact with porphyroblastic garnet, and the garnet is occasionally replaced by symplectitic intergrowth of orthopyroxene+sapphirine+cordierite±biotite. Chemographic relations in the FeO-MgO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2 system (FMAS), textural relations and chemical data indicate a clockwise P-T trajectory with marked decompression following peak conditions.

Aluminous granulites from Forefinger Point in Enderby Land, East Antarctica, preserve a variety of reaction textures which demonstrate a part of the P-T evolution. On the basis of the petrographical evidence, the following reactions are inferred : orthopyroxene+sillimanite+quartz=cordierite, orthopyroxene+sillimanite=cordierite+sapphirine, garnet+quartz=orthopyroxene+cordierite, garnet=orthopyroxene+cordierite+sapphirine. These reactions are visualized on a simplified (Fe, Mg) O-Al_2O_3-SiO_2 diagram, and are interpreted on P-T and P-_<μFeO> diagrams, respectively. The reactions imply nearly isothermal decompression after the peak metamorphic conditions. The prograde segment of the P-T path is inferred by relict spinel and corundum inclusions invariably rimmed by sapphirine in silica-undersaturated granulites. A possible reaction is spinel+corundum+cordierite=sapphirine. The petrogenetic grid for a model FMAS system indicates that the decompressional P-T path passed between two invariant points; [Spl] 11±1 kbar at 1040±15℃, and [Qtz] 8-9 kbar at 950℃. Assuming a constant temperature, a P-_<μFeO> diagram is used to demonstrate that the variety of reactions depends on bulk chemical compositions. Several geothermobarometers, including garnet-orthopyroxene, garnet-orthopyroxene-plagioclase-quartz, garnet-plagioclase-sillimanite-quartz, GRAIL, GRIPS and sapphirine-spinel are applied. The garnet-orthopyroxene and sapphirine-spinel geothermometers yield around 700-850℃, and these values are considerably lower than those inferred from the petrogenetic grid mentioned above. On the basis of the petrographical interpretation and preliminary results of SHRIMP dating (SHIRAISHI, pers. commun.), it is concluded that the Forefinger Point granulites probably do not represent a reworked portion of the Archaean Napier Complex, but rather, they may be the result of Cambrian events in the East Antarctic Shield.

Granulite-facies metamorphic rocks of Forefinger Point, which lie on the Casey Bay coastline in Enderby Land, have been affected by three stages of folding, shear zone formation, and intrusion of pegmatite. The peak metamorphic structural evolution was characterized by the development of Fn isoclinal to close buckling folds. This deformation was associated with the coexistence of orthopyroxene+sillimanite±quartz, and was followed by the formation of cordierite and symplectites of cordierite+sapphirine, orthopyroxene+cordierite+sapphirine in response to subsequent isothermal decompression. These symplectic intergrowths are generally unstrained except in some cordierite domains where cordierite exhibits a weak mineral lineation, implying that intense ductile deformation had ceased before the decompressional reactions : orthopyroxene+sillimanite+quartz=cordierite, orthopyroxene+sillimanite=cordierite+sapphirine, garnet+quartz=orthopyroxene+cordierite. Although the Forefinger Point granulites have undergone high strain deformation under peak metamorphic conditions, they experienced only low and local strain deformation after peak metamorphism. The post-peak-metamorphic structural evolution was characterized by the development of Fn+1> open to gentle buckling folds, narrow shear zones and emplacement of pegmatite.

阿武隈変成帯東部に分布する御斎所変成岩類に関する構造地質学的研究をおこなった.野外地質調査,褶曲構造解析,岩石の変形組織観察,岩石の歪解析を行い,御斎所変成岩類は全体として中生代の左横ずれ塑性剪断帯であることを明らかにした.
