Despite recent advances in the development of mechanochromic luminescent organic molecules, the mechano-responsive properties of intramolecularly stacked fluorophores are not well documented. Herein, the synthesis and emission properties of three N,N'-bis-Boc-3,3'-diaryl-2,2'-biindole (Boc= tert-butoxycarbonyl) derivatives as a new class of solid-state emissive fluorophores are described. For a 3,3'-dipyrenyl derivative in the crystalline state, partial intramolecular stacking of the dipyrenyl groups was observed, which results in a two-step mechanochromic luminescence from blue (lambda(em)=462 nm) to green (lambda(em)=516 nm) and yellow (lambda(em)=535 nm).

Selective inclusion of each of bicyclic and tricyclic aromatic guest molecules was realized utilizing the self-assembly of a crystalline benzothiadiazole-type macrocyclic boronic ester. The complete switching of the guest selectivity was achieved simply by changing the cosolvent used in the formation of the crystalline host-guest complexes. Both the association free energy of host-guest complexes and the stability of packing structure were found to play important roles for the determination of the guest selectivity in this system, and the critical role of solvent molecules in the crystalline state for the switching phenomena was clarified.

Herein, the solid-state emission with good fluorescence quantum yields of N-Boc-indolylbenzothiadiazoles as a new class of fluorophores is described. Their solid-state emission covers the wide range of the visible spectrum and the emission color can be tuned easily by changing the substituents on the two heteroaromatic rings. Among these, 3-methylindolyl derivatives exhibit moreover autonomously self-recovering mechanochromic luminescence, whereby the original solid-state emission could be recovered spontaneously at room temperature after exposure to a mechanical stimulus. The emission color, as well as the recovery time for the color change could be tuned via the introduction of different substituents on the benzothiadiazole ring. We propose that the mechanism of the autonomously self-recovering mechanochromic luminescence of 3-methylindolylbenzothiadiazoles is based on a partial amorphization of the crystals upon exposure to the mechanical stimulus, followed by autonomous recovering in the form of recrystallization.

A series of o-xylylene-type chiral 1,4-amino alcohols with an aminal structure was synthesized starting from (S)-2-(arylaminomethyl)pyrrolidine, o-bromobenzaldehyde, and a diaryl ketone. The enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes was examined by using the 1,4-amino alcohols, and the corresponding chiral secondary alcohols were obtained with high enantioselectivities (up to 98% ee). The Pummerer reaction of acetic anhydride with both alkyl aryl sulfoxides and dialkyl sulfoxides was efficiently promoted by a mesoporous aluminosilicate Al-MCM-41 to afford the corresponding alpha-acetoxy sulfides in high yields. The catalyst was easily recovered by filtration and could be reused three times without a significant loss of catalytic activity.

A series of o-xylylene-type 1,4-amino alcohols, synthesized from (R)-1-phenylethylamine, were used as chiral ligands for the enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to benzaldehyde. (S)-1-Phenyl-1-propanol was obtained with high enantioselectivity in all cases since the stereochemical outcome of the reaction was controlled by the chiral benzylic carbon bearing amino group. Highest catalytic activity was obtained by using (R)-1-{2-[1-(pyrrolidin-1-yl]ethyl]phenyl}cyclohexan-1-ol (1n) derived from (R)-1-(1-phenylethyl)pyrrolidine and cyclohexanone. Various chiral secondary alcohols were obtained by the reaction of diethylzinc and aldehydes in the presence of in within 2 h with good to high enantioselectivities. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Two diastereomeric 1,4-amino alcohols with o-xylylene structure (S,R)-2 and (S,S)-3, synthesized from chiral 1,4-diol (S,S)-1, were utilized as chiral ligands for the enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes. The stereochemical outcome of the reactions was controlled solely by the absolute configuration of the benzylic carbon bearing amino group, and both enantiomers of 1-substituted propanol were obtained with up to 98% (S) and 96% (R) enantiomeric excesses.
