To investigate the combustion characteristics of an energetic ionic liquid (i.e., a mixture of ADN and HEHN), we measured its temperature variation using fine thermocouples. The results of the temperature compensation with the time constant of the thermocouple revealed that the ignition and flame temperature were approximately 140°C and slightly lower than 1700°C. This approach for temperature measure can be helpful in investigating the reaction mechanism of an ionic liquid.

<p>A spacecraft liquid propulsion system, which is the primary actuator for guidance, navigation, and control, is critical to mission success and safety. However, this system has potential of several undesirable phenomena and component faults that lead to compromised performance or even failure. This study focused on using analytical and physical models to assess and treat risk in the system. To clarify our model-based approach, this paper proposes a framework that covers the modeling strategy and methodology based on the objective and scope of each risk management process. The framework also updates and integrates the model step by step manner through the life cycle of the system. This feature emphasizes the advantages of the model-based approach, such as inheritance and reusability, comparing conventional approaches that use different models for each domain and phase.</p>

As hydrogen refueling stations become increasingly common, it is clear that a high level of economic efficiency and safety is crucial to promoting their use. One way to reduce costs is to use a simple orifice instead of an excess flow valve, which Japanese safety regulations have identified as a safety device. However, there is concern about its effect on refueling time and on risk due to hydrogen leakage. To clarify the effect, we did a study of model -based refueling time evaluation and quantitative risk assessment for a typical refueling station. This study showed that an orifice is an effective alternative safety device. The increase in refueling time was less than 10%, based on simulations using a dynamic physical model of the station. Neither was there a significant difference in the risk between a configuration with excess flow valves and one with an orifice. (c) 2022 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Electrolytic ignition systems are expected to be compatible with ammonium dinitramide (ADN)-based propellants, but it is necessary to understand the associated electrolysis mechanisms when developing such systems. The present study analyzed the electrolysis of molten ADN, employing a specially designed apparatus, while examining the various products using in situ microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, ion chromatography, gas detector tubes and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. During electrolysis, the formation of numerous bubbles was observed, and the color of molten ADN changed from yellow to pale yellow with the progress of electrolysis. Raman spectra and ion chromatogram confirmed the presence of nitrate ion in the resulting residue, while a gas detector tube indicated that gaseous nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ammonia were generated. FT-IR spectra demonstrated that N2O and water present in the gaseous products. Using these results, a new mechanism for the processes occurring during the electrolysis of molten ADN was devised. The findings reported herein provide an improved understanding of the electrolysis mechanism of ADN-based
propellants. -

Numerous accidents in HRSs have been reported worldwide in accident databases; therefore, many researchers have performed quantitative risk assessments (QRAs) of HRSs to enable risk-informed decision making in determining the safety distances or risk mitigation measures. The HRSs, located in urban areas such as Tokyo in Japan, are situated in congested areas with tall buildings and high population density; thus, they have relatively narrow station areas. However, the QRAs are generally suitable for large plants such as nuclear power plants or chemical plants; therefore, relatively small plants or installations, such as HRSs, have not yet been considered as QRA objects. Hence, it is necessary to conduct detailed QRAs with risk analyses and reduce the applied uncertainties for relatively small plants or installations. We applied a model-based approach of risk assessment to model the HRS process using multi-physics system-level modeling and simulated a target system using Modelica-an equation-based, object-oriented modeling language that allows acausal modeling of complex cyber-physical systems The primary aim of this study was to conduct a QRA of an HRS based on multi-physics system-level modeling. First, we modeled the HRS components and physical relationships between the components using basic physical equations. Then, we elucidate a QRA based on the constructed model. The difference in the leakage rates due to the leak positions and dynamic behavior of the model parameters were calculated using the constructed model. Finally, we estimated the individual risks of all the scenarios and compared the resulting risk contours based on the constructed model that includes the hydrogen-fuel dynamic behavior with those based on the traditional model. These results indicate that it is possible to assess whether the risks around the station boundary are acceptable based on the scenario information obtained by evaluating the risks near the station. The pyrolysis of guanylurea dinitramide (GUDN), often referred to as FOX-12, was assessed using differential scanning calorimetry together with in situ microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, in order to determine the pyrolysis mechanism for this compound. The experimental results showed that the thermal behavior of GUDN depended on the heating rate, and by the presence of a condensed phase prior to a sharp exotherm at the highest heating rate. During the pyrolysis of GUDN, guanidium nitrate (GN) and cyanuric acid were generated by solid-phase reactions that were associated with this exotherm, and molten GN formation promoted the exothermic reaction.

Acrylic acid is a monomer that has been responsible for a number of severe explosions worldwide as a result of thermal runaway. The present work was intended to lead to an improved understanding of the kinetics of the thermal polymerization and Michael addition reaction (MAR) of acrylic acid. Sealed cell differential scanning calorimetry was carried out, and the kinetics of the thermal polymerization of acrylic acid were assessed on the basis of the model-free Friedman method. In addition, microcalorimetry using a Thermal Activity Monitor IV apparatus was conducted to determine the kinetic parameters for the MAR. The rate constant for the MAR was found to be k (s(-1)) = 3.45 x 10(5) x exp (- 9.48 x 10(3)/T (K)), while the activation energy was 78.8 kJ mol(-1). The progress of the MAR was fitted with an n-order reaction model, and the reaction order as well as the rate constant was determined to be linearly proportional to temperature. By employing a modified n-order reaction model in which the reaction order was a linear function of temperature, we obtained a reaction rate equation for the MAR that closely reproduced the experimental results over a wide temperature range.

This work assessed the pyrolysis of a well-established gas generating agent consisting of a mixture of guanidine nitrate (GN) with basic copper nitrate (BCN), using thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry in conjunction with high resolution mass spectrometry (TG/DSC/HRMS). This instrumentation simultaneously determined mass changes and heat flow, and also permitted evaluation of evolved gases on an accurate mass basis. Fragmentation ratio correction was used to analyze the MS data acquired via electron ionization. GN/BCN mixtures were found to undergo pyrolysis to evolve H_2O, N_2, NOradical dot, CO_2 and N_2O. Using HRMS, species having similar masses, such as CO2 and N2O, CO and N2, and NH3 and OHradical dot, were successfully distinguished. The thermal analysis data and the gas evolution results allowed a pyrolysis mechanism to be proposed. In this mechanism, a copper(II) complex obtained from the BCN catalytically decomposes NH_3 generated from the GN to produce N_2 and H_2O. The pyrolysis of a mixture of GN and BCN thus provides a synergistic effect that increases the heat and gas output.
