<p>This research examined the effects of the family-centered positive behavior support (PBS) approach and parent monitoring on the behaviors of young children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and their parents. The family-centered PBS approach involved collaboratively selecting target behaviors and routines, parental monitoring of children’s target behaviors, planning behavior intervention strategies for each routine based on ABC analysis results, coaching parents on the strategies, and providing feedback on the outcomes of the parents’ implementation of the strategies. The results confirmed that the family-centered PBS approach was associated with enhancements in the children’s target behaviors. Additionally, the findings validated that the parents may apply the behavior intervention strategies to nontrained routines. Possible factors that influenced this outcome were that the parent monitoring may have functioned as a self-monitoring of the parents’ behaviors that the checklist in the parent monitoring may have served as a discriminative stimulus for the implementation of the intervention plan, that feedback promoted parents’ attention to the situation where the target behaviors occurred, and that the parents were relatively positive about their parenting.</p>

<p>This study evaluated the effectiveness of a parent training implemented by a child development support staff for parents of child with developmental disabilities. The staff was provided a lecture on the implementation of the parent training before implementation and discussed fidelity of the parent training and results of works by the parents with the researchers after each session on the phone. The staff implemented the parent training for 4 parents of young child with autism spectrum disabilities. The parent training was composed of selecting target behaviors and routines, developing parenting procedures that used antecedent and consequent controls, monitoring their children’s target behaviors at target routines, and modifying the parenting procedures based on results of parent monitoring. We evaluated whether the children’s target behaviors increased and categorized the staff’s feedback on the reports by parents as listening, labeled praise, unlabeled praise, statement about children, statement about parents, direct instruction, suggestion, relating statement, corrective criticism, or other. The results suggested that three children’s target behaviors increased as a result of parent monitoring. The analysis of the staff’s feedback suggests that future research should develop and evaluated the implementation training which promotes staffs to use labeled praises and statements about children.</p>

<p>The purposes of the present study were to analyze relations between the participation of specialists and people in the supporting environment in studies of the functional assessment of behavioral problems that reported large effects, and to discuss future directions for this research area. Research articles (N=36) published in Japan from 2000 to 2013 were reviewed and the profile of the participants and concerned people analyzed from the time of assessment to the design of an intervention plan, based on the criteria for functional assessment and the method of calculation of effect size of Ogasahara, Asakura, and Suenaga (2004, in Japanese). When the studies were categorized by effect size, using the criteria of Ogasahara et al. (2004), it was found that 23 studies reported a large effect, whereas 13 studies reported a small effect. Features of studies reporting a large effect included having a practitioner trained in behavioral assessment (e.g., the researcher) and having the involvement of people from the supporting environment in all steps from assessment to decisions on the target behaviors. The results indicated that practitioners collaborated on all steps of the functional assessment or the assessment and selection of target behaviors with people from the supporting environment in many of the studies reporting a large effect. The discussion suggests that future researchers focus on consultation methods in the steps of selection of the target behaviors and concrete methods of collaborating with people from the supporting environment and evaluation of the frequency of performance by people from the supporting environment.</p>

The purpose of the present study was to examine effectiveness of implementing parent training in a special elementary school for students with intellectual disabilities. Participants, 3 mothers of 6- to 7-year-old children (2 boys, 1 girl) with intellectual disabilities and/or autism spectrum disorders, were given five 1.5-hour training sessions, in which the topics were selecting target behaviors and developing parenting procedures that used antecedent and consequent controls. The training included lectures, implementation of the parenting procedures at home, recording of the children's target behaviors by the parents, and delivering reciprocal video feedback. Inspection of each parent's recording revealed that 1 child acquired the target behavior. Utterance analyses of the reciprocal video feedback sessions suggested that the use of reciprocal video feedback may have promoted the monitoring of the children's behavior and also reinforced participation in reciprocal training. The discussion presents possible future directions for further study on this topic.

<p>This study reviewed School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) effectiveness studies and investigative studies on SWPBIS sustainability factors published between 2010 and 2016 in the United States. Among the 20 effectiveness studies, some were conducted in high schools or alternative schools, some involved many participants and most studies used specific methods to evaluate the integrity and effectiveness of SWPBIS implementation. School team actions and administrators supports were analyzed in some of the sustainability factors investigative studies. These analyses suggest that there is a need to conduct SWPBIS effectiveness studies in various schools, develop methods to measure the integrity and effectiveness of SWPBIS implementation, and create an environment that promotes SWPBIS implementation in Japan.</p>

The present report reviewed articles about single-case experimental treatment designs for children with disabilities that were published through December 2016 in Japanese journals. The studies (<i>N</i>=287) that were selected were categorized in terms of the number of participants, the age of the participants, the participants' diagnoses, and the dependent variables. Criteria for designs that met the evidence standards of the What Works Clearinghouse were used to evaluate the studies. All of the studies reviewed reported that the independent variables had been manipulated systematically, and that the researchers had determined when and how the independent variable conditions were to be changed. Many studies reported inter-observer agreement of more than 80% on the average. All phases of the studies had a minimum of 3 data points. However, few studies reported inter-observer agreement for all phases or for at least 20% of the data points in each condition. Also, few studies included attempts to demonstrate effects of the intervention in at least 3 points of time or with at least 3 repetitions of the phases.

Barriers to participation in parent training include lack of child care, geographic isolation, and extensive commitment of time to other activities. An innovative and promising area of research is the use of teleconferencing through the Internet for teaching intervention techniques to parents of children with autism spectrum disorders. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the acquisition of target behaviors by young children with autism spectrum disorders, and the improvement of self-evaluation of their parents' parenting behavior by after the parents had participated in a parent-training program via telephone conferencing in which the training site and the parents' home were connected through the Internet. Participants in the study were 7 parents of young children with autism spectrum disorders. The program included training on selecting target behaviors, developing parenting procedures consisting of antecedent and consequent control, implementing those procedures at home, and recording target behaviors. As part of the program, feedback was delivered by the instructors. The parents' self-reports indicated that all 7 children acquired the target behaviors, and that self-evaluation of parenting behavior by the parents increased significantly. Anecdotally, the parents reported that parent training via telephone conferencing was acceptable, usable, and effective. The present results suggest that parent training via the Internet may have potential for increasing access to services.

Study objective: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of parent training for teaching toilet skills to 2 young children with autism. Design: Baseline, intervention, and modification of intervention procedures. Setting: The parents implemented the intervention procedures in their home. Participants: 2 children (5 years old) with autism and their parents. Intervention: Functional assessment was used to identify intervention procedures. The procedures were modified so that the parents could use them easily. The parents were trained to implement the procedures with their children. The procedures were changed on the basis of the results from their implementation. Measure: Frequency of correct and incorrect toileting behavior and the percentage of correct toileting behavior. The data were collected by the parents. Results: Both children's correct toileting behavior increased, and their incorrect toileting behavior decreased. One child spontaneously acquired the communication skill expressing the need to use the toilet. Conclusion: The results suggest that training parents to use procedures based on functional assessment and discussions with parents and modifying the procedures on the basis of parents' records were effective in increasing the children's appropriate toilet skills.

The present paper provides a descriptive analysis of empirical research published between 2005 and 2011 on parent education, parent training, and parent-implemented interventions for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or learning disorders (LD). With the use of specified criteria, 64 publications were selected. The descriptive analysis compared the target behavior of the children by diagnosis and chronological age, and examined the parents' burden in relation to parenting interventions and the assessment that was used. The results were as follows: (a) most of the children had been taught behavior related to their disabilities, (b) few publications evaluated maintenance of the parents' implementation of the intervention procedures, (c) most of the parents received 11 hours or more of training on the intervention procedures, and (d) few articles reported assessment of the parents or building intervention strategies. The present review suggests that further research is necessary on methods of selection of target behavior in the context of children's quality of life, and on procedures to assess parents' burden in their daily life. Intervention strategies should be developed that parents can implement easily with their children.

The present study assessed the effects of training the parents of 2 children with intellectual disabilities. The intervention procedures with the children, which were based on information from an assessment of their behavior, included the use of physical prompts and recording the children's behavior. The parents were trained to use the intervention procedures in their homes. The results indicated that both children exhibited an increase in the target behavior. The parents maintained their recording of their children's target behavior in the settings where the parents were taught to implement the intervention procedures. Additionally, the parent of one of the children recorded other target behavior of her child and spontaneously used physical prompts for that behavior. Social validity ratings by the parents indicated that they viewed the intervention as acceptable and effective.

In the present study, a child and a youth with developmental disabilities were given training in social and living skills, including shopping and cooking. At the start of the study, the child was 8 years 6 months old, and the youth, 17 years 9 months old. In order to promote the use and generalization of the trained skills in daily settings, their parents were requested to record their children's target behavior. The parents were also told about the usage of supporting instruments from the training. After receiving this instruction, the parents gave their children opportunities to emit the target behavior in daily settings. The shopping skill that had been trained was spontaneously used and generalized. The records of the cooking skill that had been trained revealed that an additional supporting procedure was needed. These results suggest the usefulness for promoting spontaneous use and generalization of social and living skills of supporting parents by requesting them to record their children's behavior. Assessment of the social validity of the present procedure indicated that the parents valued positively the selection of the target behavior and the procedure of recording the behavior in daily settings. Future studies should modify the supporting procedure so as to make it easier for the parents to learn the procedure.
