<p>This paper experimentally investigates the effects of wind barrier parameters including porosity, hole scheme, installation method, height and vortex-induced vibration (VIV) countermeasures on the aerodynamic responses of bluff-box girders with different side ratios and the wind flow characteristics above them. The results show that wind barriers effectively reduce the mean wind speed above the girders but intensify vertical VIV and decrease the critical wind velocity for flutter. However, the proposed countermeasures completely suppress the VIV in a certain side-ratio girder. Generally, porosity is the most crucial parameter in both the aerodynamic performance of the bridge and wind-speed reduction above the bridge while other parameters show limited effects.</p>

<p>The objective of this research is to investigate the aerodynamic performance of the edge girder of a cable-stayed bridge as part of the structural system. Through wind tunnel tests on the full elastic bridge model, the vertical and torsional aerodynamic response of the girder was measured. The wind was set to attack the model perpendicularly, at the positive angle of attack of 2.1°, at the yawing angle of 10° and 20°. For these different conditions, the bridge showed the vertical vortex-induced vibration of different modes, while it showed the torsional vortexinduced vibration of the 1st symmetric mode. The amplitude of these vortex-induced vibrations was smaller than the allowable value. Meanwhile, no galloping and no torsional flutter occurred until their checking wind velocity. Additionally, in the boundary layer turbulent flow, the bridge showed the gust response, the amplitude of which was small.</p>

<p>This paper experimentally investigates the effects of side-surface openings on the torsional flutter instability of a rectangular cylinder with a side ratio of <i>B/D</i> = 5, where <i>B</i> is the width and <i>D</i> is the height. The torsional one-degree-of-freedom (1DOF) free vibration tests and flow visualization tests were carried out on the rectangular cylinder with different-sized openings. The opening size is non-dimensionalized as the Opening-area Ratio (<i>OR</i>), which is the ratio of the total-openings area to the sidesurface area. Increasing <i>OR</i> stabilized the rectangular cylinder against the vortexinduced vibration and the torsional flutter and promoted the separated shear layer to reattach more upstream side of the cylinder surface. This research contributes to providing a method to stabilize the box girder against torsional flutter.</p>

Magnitude and loading patterns of wind loads must be set properly to secure horizontal stability of a bridge structure. Details of wind loads and its loading patterns are stipulated in the Design Specification of Highway Bridges and the Design Manual of Steel Highway Bridges where a upper and lower chord of sway bracings share the wind load equally. Since background of wind loading pattern in the specification is not known, rationalization of bridge structures encounters difficulties. In this study, aiming at obtaining fundamental data of wind load distribution on a plate-girder bridge structure for structural rationalization, wind loads on bridge parts are investigated by a wind-tunnel test. The study revealed quantitative results which are almost identical to the current design specification.

Understanding the characteristics of strong crosswinds on bridges is important for taking more effective countermeasures against vehicle running safety. The crosswinds on the bridge have been partly evaluated through wind tunnel test or CFD, while little study has been conducted on along-bridge evaluation by field measurement. Therefore, we investigated the characteristics of the crosswind on the Trans-Tokyo Bay Highway Bridge which has variable-depth box girder based on the field measurement by using a vehicle crossing the bridge. On the measurement day, the inflow wind speed was as high as about 13m/s, and the wind direction was perpendicular to the bridge axis. The measurement results on the most windward lane showed that the effects of the larger bridge girder height were significant in decreasing the wind speed. Still, some intermittent high wind speed was observed, too. The cause was the difference in the height of shear flow separated from the leading edge of the bridge girder. In the measurement result on the most leeward lane, the effects of girder height were less observed due to entrainment.

<p>The objective of this research is to experimentally investigate the effects of the wind barrier, regarding the aerodynamic response of the bridge and the aerodynamic forces of the vehicle on the bridge. A box girder model with a width-to-height ratio of 9 is applied. The wind barrier is with a constant height and with a section of Straight-line Type (ST) and Curved-line Type (CT). The opening of the wind barrier was non-dimensionalized as Opening area Ratio (OR), the ratio of its opening area to its windward-surface area. Based on the results of the torsional 1DOF free vibration tests on the girder, the wind barrier of OR = 0% resulted in the aerodynamic instabilities of the girder, i.e., the vortex-induced vibration and torsional flutter, while increasing OR stabilized these aerodynamic instabilities. Based on the measurement of the aerodynamic forces on a simplified vehicle on the girder, enlarging OR increased the drag force coefficient (<i>Cs</i>) of the vehicle, whereas the wind barrier of OR = 50% still reduced <i>Cs</i> by about 50% compared with that without wind barrier.</p>

<p> When an ultra-high-speed train passes through a turnout hall in a tunnel, where a cross-sectional area abruptly changes, a compression wave is generated and becomes a micro-pressure wave at the tunnel exit. Since conventional measures such as a perforated device cannot be applied in a tunnel, we develop a new measure that utilizes a bypass tunnel across the turnout hall. When a train passes in front of the bypass tunnel, positive pulse waves followed by negative pulse waves are generated. By superposing these waves on the wavefront of the compression wave, we can reduce its pressure gradient which determines the strength of the micro-pressure wave. The dimensions of the bypass tunnel are calculated with a simple wave propagation model to obtain the optimum waveform to superpose. The pressure waves generated by a train passing through a turnout hall with and without the bypass tunnel are measured by experiment. The result shows that the maximum pressure gradient of the compression wave is reduced by about 40% with the bypass tunnel.</p>

<p>Analysis on bridge health inspection results and maintenance work cost records were conducted targeting road bridges in Kanagawa prefecture, which may provide a helpful perspective for estimation of future maintenance cost of bridges. The inspection results of 336 bridges were analyzed by type of structural members and implied tendency so that corrosion in steel girders and cracking in concrete girders and slabs progress relatively slowly but some types of concrete member deteriorations are found after escalation. The maintenance work cost record showed that total cost accumulation for repairing work of concrete bridges occurs rarely but drastically at one time. Besides, in steel bridges total cost accumulation for repairing increases slowly but steadily due to paint deterioration or corrosion.</p>

<p> This paper describes an investigation on vehicle stability when crossing a bridge under strong wind by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and vehicle dynamics stability model. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) was implemented in the CFD to compute time-histories of vehicle's aerodynamic force coefficients when moving on the bridge at different traffic lanes. The aerodynamic force coefficients were later utilized to compute wind loads on the vehicle, based on which vibration and stability of vehicle were evaluated using vehicle dynamics model. Simulation results show that the flow fields around vehicle vary for each traffic lane and they were strongly influenced by the shear layer separated from leading edge of the bridge girder. As a result, the aerodynamic characteristics acting on the vehicle and the normal force on each wheel vary according to the traffic lane. Critical conditions of vehicle instability are defined as overturning and sideslip or yawing. The critical wind speed associated with each condition is defined as the wind speed that causes the normal force on one of the wheels becomes zero. Analyses demonstrate that the lowest critical wind speed occurs when the vehicle moves on the windward lane and it increases toward the leeward lanes. It is also observed that at any lanes, the critical condition for yawing instability occurs at a lower wind speed than the critical condition for overturning instability.</p>

Sea surface temperature change due to the global warming may affect the development of typhoons. In order to estimate extreme wind speed, a tracking model of typhoon simulation considering the sea surface temperature was developed before, but there were some discrepancies between estimation and observation. In this study, from the viewpoint of characteristics of a linear model in the updating calculation, data period for the modeling was restricted to summer based on the number of typhoons approaching to Japan. Focusing on the latitude of 31.5 degrees north where almost all typhoons start to weaken, the termination condition of the typhoons was clarified. In addition, if the value calculated by updating calculation in the model exceeds the threshold, it was recalculated from the time of occurrence of a typhoon. As a result, the typhoon central pressure difference approached the observed value by applying these improvements to the tracking model.

<p>Rain-wind induced vibration occurred for stay cables of a cable-stayed bridge with a high damping rubber damper. We focused on this incident and compared the damping assumed at designing the high damping rubber damper and that obtained by a field vibration test of the cable in order to investigate the cause of the vibration. The calculation of the damping of the high damping rubber damper is performed by a simple estimation formula which is an approximate expression. The damping obtained by the field vibration test was smaller than the simple estimation formula, and it was the same for the damping obtained by a complex eigenvalue analysis. Therefore, we considered the influence of the shear elastic spring constant of the high damping rubber damper and cable tension on damping. As a result, we found that the reduction of the damping becomes remarkable when the shear spring constant becomes small and that the shear spring constant becomes smaller due to the influence of the rigidity of the mounting part of the high damping rubber damper. </p>

<p>Self-excited force of a bridge deck is often expressed with flutter derivatives which are obtained experimentally and functions of reduced frequency. On the other hand, rational function approximation of self-excited force, which is converted from experimental result, is used to analyze time-history response. Recently, a direct approximation method of self-excited force was developed. This study verified the applicability of direct approximation of time-history self-excited force to a rational function. In addition, effects of wind speed level and wind-speed steps on the approximation result were examined.</p>

<p>In this paper, the wind flow mechanism of steel plate girder bridges is discussed based on computational fluid analysis. The analyis of steel plate girder bridges were carried out for the model which has four 3m height girders and its interval is 3m. As a result of analyis, the correspondance between experiment and analysis is confirmed, and it was observed that the distribution of drag coefficient is affected by the ratio of parapet and girder height, and it is found that the design method of lateral member is not necessarily safe side. The trial calculation of sway bracing based on the analysis were conducted. As a result of calculation the section of sway bracing needs to be changed from the one designed by the current design method.</p>

<p>This paper deals with a parametric study on safety of stay cables of cable-stayed bridges considering the factors affecting their ultimate and fatigue strengths. Currently, safety factor of 2.5 is used for the design of cable-stayed bridges in Japan but this safety factor has not been verified for various loading effects and unexpected damage conditions. The aim of the study is to clarify the safety and reliability of stay cables of cable-stayed bridges at various loading and structural conditions. For that, a finite element model of cable-stayed bridge is developed and static analysis is performed to explain how live load intensity, cable loss and corrosion affect the ultimate and fatigue demand to capacity ratios of stay cables. A probabilistic based reliability analysis is also performed to validate the deterministic finite element analysis results which indicates that the structural reliability solutions are rational and reasonable.</p>

This paper investigates the physical mechanism of corner-cut on aerodynamic stability in a rectangular bluff body by using Large Eddy Simulations. In corner-cut case, the flow attaches at 1<sup>st</sup> and 2<sup>nd</sup> leading edges and high frequency components of velocity fluctuation are more active at the trailing edge area, therefore they enhance or stimulate the reattachment tendency of shear flow on side surface and keep the Karman vortex form further from the rear side of the bluff body. As a result, the size of wake structures is much smaller, the recirculation length is longer, therefore, the value of drag coefficient and Strouhal number changes significantly.

Since the aerodynamic stability is one of the most important issues to realize the long-span bridges, various studies were carried out and the latest findings were applied to the construction of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridges. However, the all countermeasure for aerodynamic stability may not be necessary at the maintenance stage. Therefore, it was required to confirm the aerodynamic stability of maintenance stage. In order to consider three dimensional effects, 3D flutter analysis which was developed for the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge was carried out using the aerodynamic forces measured by the 2D wind tunnel test. As a result of this study, it was found that the aerodynamic stability is kept at maintenance work.

This paper presents the results from a state space stochastic system identification to extract flutter derivatives (FDs) under different turbulent flows. The aim of the study is to clarify the effects of oncoming turbulence on the self-excited force of a suspended long span bridge deck by using a section model. In the study reported herein, the more challenging is the application of a system identification method to identify FDs from gust responses for the section model. The gust response is obtained by an experimental wind tunnel test and simulation for a trussed deck section. The output only time domain analysis stochastic system identification is proposed to extract simultaneously all FDs from two degrees of freedom system. The results are also compared with those fromsmooth flow and free decay response.
