It is important to promote learners' noticing when improving their pronunciation, but it does no seem to be effective to have learners listen to their pronunciation and let them self-correct. In this research, first, learners read aloud a passage and record it. Next, they were asked to listen to the recording and to write anything they noticed on their pronunciation. Then, the learners listened to another recording that was recorded by the same L1 learner and received explanations on the pronunciation problems. Lastly, the learners read aloud the same passage again. After the entire process, the number of pronunciation mistake decreased. The results indicate the importance of the instructor's intervention to enhance learners' self-monitoring ability.

In general, accent teaching materials incorporate activities such as answering the drop of 4-beat nouns or the difference of accent in 2-beat words (e.g. "ame" (HL-LH)) during the beginning lessons. These types of activities are sometimes too difficult for learners, and also may give learners wrong impression that they have to memorize the accent of every single word. In this presentation, the author introduces accent teaching activity which utilizes Japanese surnames as a first lesson. After listening to the stimulation sounds, learners answered whether the accent dropped or not, and then two accent types of (0) and (-2) were introduced to them. Following the lesson, learners were asked to answer the accent type of other surnames. It was indicated that learners improved their ability to guess and make corrections in the accent types.

As a part of the project that improves training system for Multicultural Teachers, the survey was conducted to analyze how the participating teachers' beliefs change before and after the training. The results show that there seems to be little change in their beliefs after a short and lecture-centered training. To further explore how the teachers' beliefs are formed, interviews were conducted to in-service teachers. The results revealed that some beliefs are affected by the teachers' real experience; while others such as relationship between BICS and CALP are affected by the teachers' knowledge.
