This study investigated the misuse of consideration expressions in emails by Japanese language learners using data from the development of "SAKURADAYORI." The results of the survey categorized five types of misuse: A) errors in honorific language, B) failure to use mitigating expressions, C) inappropriate greetings, D) expressions unsuitable for the context or recipient, and E) behaviors that are inappropriate in Japanese etiquette. While type-A errors may indicate a lack of Japanese proficiency, type-B and type-E errors could be perceived as personal issues. Therefore, providing feedback that explains the correct expressions and the reasons behind the inappropriate ones is crucial.

Japanese language instructors perform a wide range of administration and management tasks in addition to teaching, but there are very few opportunities to learn about these tasks. It is uncommon for Japanese language teacher training courses or undergraduate and graduate courses in Japanese language education to cover the area of administration and management, and information sharing and discussions across institutions on the topic are rarely held at academic societies. There have been some attempts in recent years to provide a forum for learning about administration and management in Japanese language education. This presentation reports on a case study of a graduate course in Japanese language education that deals with administration and management in Japanese language education.

This study examined the use of "<i>te-shimau</i> " by Japanese native speakers （JNS） and Japanese language learners （JLL） using a narrative task which is Task 12 of the YNU corpus. The results showed that JNS often use [non volitional verb + <i>te-shimau </i> ] to describe unfavorable situations that happened at the climax of the story, while JLL use it less frequently and at different parts of the story. Based on these results, it was suggested that when teaching "<i>te-shimau</i> ", a narrative task helps to practice using [non volitional verb + <i>te-shimau</i> ] in situations where something unfavorable happened.

This study compared the use of "~Nara" in outgoing and reply e-mail. The results showed that there was a difference between native Japanese speakers and non-native Japanese speakers when sending reply e-mail. In the case of outgoing e-mail, non-native Japanese speakers were able to assume the relationship with the other party by themselves, but it is thought that they were not accustomed to sending reply e-mail, and their writing style was different from that of native Japanese speakers. Therefore, it is necessary to provide instruction, not only for sending outgoing e-mail, but also for sending reply e-mail.

This presentation reports on the 2018 YNU Summer Program which was held to promote a "college experience in Japan" for international students. A Total of 25 students from 6 countries and regions participated in the program. This year, no Japanese language class was provided for the summer program, and the students participated in the pre-existing Japanese language and other classes. Furthermore, a graduate college orientation was held to encourage the students to consider YNU as a study abroad option. In the presentation, we will discuss how we made changes in the curriculum based on the survey results from the previous year and talk about future planned improvements.

This presentation reviews the 2017 YNU Japanese Language and Culture Summer Program and discusses considerations for improvements. The program mainly consisted of Japanese language and culture classes, and the 2017 program offered beginning-intermediate and advanced classes to match the online placement test results. Academic counseling was also provided for those interested in applying for graduate school. The program evaluation showed that while the participants were satisfied with the Japanese language and culture classes overall, some felt that the program did not exactly match their individual Japanese language levels and purposes for attending the summer program.

This study analyzes the usage of 'V-yoo to omou' in an e-mail task given to 30 native speakers and 90 learners of Japanese. The e-mail task was to reply to a request to bring something to a picnic. It was found that Japanese language learners never used 'V-yoo to omou' despite having learned it, while it was a common choice of Japanese native speakers. 'V-yoo to omou' was used in this task to let the other person make the final decision, but learners did not understand this nuance. In conclusion, we found that we need to reconsider how 'V-yoo to omou' is taught.

This study analyses emails written by 30 Japanese native speakers (JNS) and 90 Japanese language learners (JLL). Each participant wrote an email for Task A, "Declining a request for a translation" and Task B, "Inquiring about coming to Japan." For Task A, we found that the JNS used circumlocution, saying thingsin a roundabout way such as dekisoo ni nai, whereas JLL commonly used direct phrases such as dekinai. For Task B, JNS inquired without appealing to the senses, but JLL mentioned hardships and lacked consideration. Japanese language education should introduce JLL to methods of responding more politely or indirectly.
