<p>In surface soil contamination by lead, the soil excavation and removal is often used as a main remediation method, and there is concern about the adverse effects on the environment, economy, and society of excessive treatment. In this study, the sustainable remediation methods were examined by calculating parameters to evaluate the residual health risks and the environmental, economic, and social impacts of each remediation method at different excavation depths of the soil to be remediated, using actual measurements of the vertical distribution of lead content in the soil. It was found that with sufficient soil fill or pavement, 50 cm of the soil excavation and removal would reduce the health risk and halve other environmental impacts and costs of countermeasures. Measuring detailed depth profiles were found to reduce environmental, economic, and social impacts as well as health risks.</p>

<p> This study was conducted to explore the effectiveness of thermally enhanced <i>in situ</i> bioremediation of the groundwater contaminated with chlorinated ethenes in reducing the treatment time. First, the soilcolumn experiments were used to evaluate the effects of elevated temperatures on the dechlorination of tetrachloroethene under semi-static flow conditions. Then, a field test of thermally enhanced <i>in situ</i> bioremediation of the groundwater contaminated with chlorinated ethenes in Japan was conducted using groundwater circulation. The abundance of <i>Dehalococcoides</i>, the bacteria responsible for the dechlorination of <i>cis</i>-1, 2-dichloroethene and vinyl chloride to ethene, increased rapidly at 30°C than at 15°C in the column experiments. This increase greatly improved dechlorination performance of <i>cis</i>-1, 2-dichloroethene and vinyl chloride. In the field test, the temperature and nutrient concentrations (as total carbon) in the contaminated aquifer were controlled at 23°C–30°C and above 100 mg/L, respectively, through repeated injection and pumping during the demonstration period. The chlorinated ethenes in the groundwater decreased to below the groundwater standards after 378 days. The total chlorinated ethene removal rate obtained in the field test was higher than those obtained in previous studies of <i>in situ</i> bioremediation without thermal treatment. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of thermally enhanced <i>in situ</i> bioremediation of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated ethenes in Japan.</p>

Effect of Water Hardness on Acute Aquatic Toxicity of Fatty Acid Salts

<p>The acute aquatic toxicity of anionic surfactants, including fatty acid salts, changes depending on water hardness. Generally, the acute aquatic toxicity of <i>Daphnia magna</i> is caused by the adsorption of surfactants and other substances. Despite the low environmental risk, the effect of water hardness on the acute aquatic toxicity of soap should be discussed to improve the assessment accuracy. Previously, we evaluated the effects of water hardness and the presence of an adsorbent on the acute aquatic toxicity of soap by performing an immobility test using <i>D. magna</i> in accordance with Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) K 0229. Immobility was low at 50 ppm and a higher water hardness was indicated owing to the loss of interfacial activities caused by the formation of insoluble fatty acid calcium or magnesium complexes (soap scum). In the current study, we evaluate the effects of water hardness on the acute aquatic toxicity of C10, C12, C14, C16, and C18 saturated and C18:1 unsaturated fatty acid sodium salts. The EC<sub>50</sub> is measured via an immobility test in accordance with JIS K 0229 using <i>D. magna</i>, and the surface tension is measured as an indicator of surface activity. Results show that the EC<sub>50</sub> and surface tension curves change with water hardness in single and mixed solutions. C18:1 indicates the least change and the highest surface activity. Moreover, immobility change is not observed when C18:1 is filtered, whereas the immobility of other solutions decreased significantly. This implies the effect of soap scum on immobility, such as the clogging of gills by soap scum. Based on quantitative analysis, the percentage of C18:1 that transformed soap scum to its initial concentration exceeds 80%. This implies that calcium deficiency under 5 and 25 ppm water hardness affects the immobility of larval <i>D. magna</i>. The effects of soap scum clogging and calcium deficiency on <i>D. magna</i> should be considered before assessing the soap.</p>

<p>In 2017 chloroethylene was added to the Soil Contamination Countermeasures Act as a specified hazardous substance. In this study we focused on VC, and measured and evaluated the behavior of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOC) in unsaturated soil. The adsorption/absorption characteristics of each CVOC on four soils were measured and the distribution ratios to each phase in unsaturated soils were calculated. The ratio to each phase varied greatly depending on the type of CVOC and the type of soil. It was found that VC are easily affected by environmental changes such as rainfall and caution is required during surveys and evaluations.</p>

<p>Four indexes related to quantification accuracy and three indexes related to identification accuracy were investigated to clarify the reasons of their accuracy decrease in the simultaneous measuring using the GC-MS AIQS-DB method. Seven items concerning (1) the variation of quantification value in repeated measurement, (2) the lower limit of quantification value, (3) the change of quantification value effected by coexisting substance, (4) the recovery ratio in solid phase extraction, (5) the change of retention time, (6) the decrease of peak similarity and (7) the decrease of S/N ratio were ranked and scored based on the measurement results for 280 chemicals registered in the Japanese PRTR Law. As the result, it was found that 134 chemicals have the accuracy level enough for a screening evaluation, and that 105 chemicals were required detailed examinations to clarify the reasons of decrease in quantification accuracy and the identification accuracy. The comprehensive assessment matrix consisting of quantification accuracy and identification accuracy presented in this study shows the level and the cause of accuracy decrease. Therefore, it makes possible to assess the analysis accuracy as well as the detection of the large amount of monitoring data of simultaneous measuring using GC-MS AIQS-DB.</p>
