<p> In this paper, the applicability of numerical simulation is verified by analyzing the behavior of a centrifuge model of a circular shaft in a dense sandy soil with the upper layer dry and the lower layer saturated. In addition, the numerical model was used to analyze the effect of the width of the sand layer on the seismic response of the circular shaft, taking into account the various conditions of the actual circular shaft (shaft stiffness, relative density of the sand layer, drainage conditions).</p><p> The results showed that it is possible to evaluate the response of the ground and circular shafts by appropriately setting the physical properties of the sand ground and circular shafts. In addition, it was also found that if the width of the sand ground is secured to be at least as wide as the diameter of the circular shaft, it is possible to appropriately evaluate the response of the circular shaft when the stiffness of the circular shaft is large, such as before the concrete cracks. However, when the circular shaft has low stiffness, as in the case of concrete cracking, the response of the circular shaft was overestimated in the model with a narrow sand layer depth.</p>

<p> In order to clarify the fatigue characteristics of the concrete floating of the offshore wind platform, fatigue loading tests were conducted on the small-scale partial specimens under constant compressive stress condition assuming for the service environment. As a result, the fatigue life was about 102 times shorter in water than in air, as in the past researches. In addition, when the stress-intensity ratio of the maximum amplitude was large, the fatigue life tended to be shorter at the joint than at the center. It was found that when the maximum amplitude was 70%, the fatigue life at the joint was one order shorter than that at the center. It is considered that the contact state of the joint surface has a great influence. It was confirmed that the fatigue life of PRC members (<i>fck’</i>= 60 N/mm2) can be roughly evaluated by applying the fatigue strength formula in the JSCE specifications.</p>

<p>In this paper, the applicability of two deformation indices related to displacement of concrete members proposed by the authors has been verified for full-scale RC members with shear or bending failure under bilateral loads. These two indices, namely "thickness increment of RC member" assuming out-of-plane shear failure, and a newly proposed index, "relative displacement on compressive edge in RC member", which assumes in-plane shear failure and out-of-plane bending failure, are mainly discussed in this paper.</p><p>As a result, it was revealed that the deformation indices could estimate the failure mode of RC columns with shear failure or bending failure under horizontal bilateral loads. In addition, it was confirmed that one of the indices reached the limit value at about 90% or more of the maximum load, and that the element size dependence was small. It was also found that this index can reasonably evaluate the load carrying capacity as much as or better than the existing strain indices.</p>

The present research aimed at evaluating early age thermal cracking risk of durable RC slabs incorporating slag cement and expansive additive on multiple span steel box girder bridges utilizing full-scale 3D FEM simulation. First, laboratory investigations were conducted to calibrate the material models of durable concrete. Second, the material models were utilized in several member level FEM models and the simulation procedure was verified regarding early age volume changes calibrating parameters for expansion energy and reduction factors for creep. Third, thermal and volumetric changes in RC slab were monitored and the simulation procedure was further validated in structural level utilizing full-scale FEM model of the real bridge. The simulated maximum tensile stress along bridge axis in RC slab signify the risk of early age transverse cracking where the accumulated stepping construction stress is comparatively large. The effectiveness of expansive additive in reducing the risk of transverse cracking is revealed from the simulation. However, parametric studies of the validated model indicate that the RC slab on the permanent form of seven span steel box girder bridge is vulnerable to early age thermal cracking regardless of ambient conditions and placing temperatures when coefficient of thermal expansion of concrete is larger than 6×10-6/℃.

<p>Based on the assumption that workers can be made to learn correct test methods by having them understand the importance of adhering to the work items specified in the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) and properly understand ing the mechanism of measuring equipment, workers were made to conduct the slump test, air content test, and compressive strength test under conditions deviating from those specified by JIS. Two types of concrete were used, with respective slump of 21 cm and 12 cm. The findings included the facts that the timing of lifting of the slump cone can decrease the measured slump value of fresh concrete by up to 3.0 cm, that the finishing method of the samples placed in the air content tester can cause the measured air content value to vary by up to 1.5%, and that tumbling of specimens prior to concrete hardening can cause reduction in compressive strength by approximately 7% by the material age of 28 days.</p>

To optimize concrete tracks in terms of reasonable loading structure, superior workability, easy maintenance and economic efficiency, a new solid-bed track with resilient sleepers has been developed by the authors. In this research, to clarify the shrinkage behavior of this track, full-scale track members were prepared. To investigate the shrinkage behavior of the track, numerical simulation was performed using a three-dimensional multi-scale coupled model where the microscopic characteristics of cementitious composites and nonlinear structural mechanics are integrated.<br> The results of this study indicate that shrinkage cracks can be generated from just under the corner of sleepers in an inverted V shape when the thickness of the track is relatively thin, on the order of 80 mm. However, generation of shrinkage cracks can be restricted when the thickness of the track is greater than about 280 mm, as is typical in snowy cold regions. The results indicated also that the generation of shrinkage cracks is unlikely when the thickness of the track is about 580 mm. This may be due to the fact that the age at which the main stress peaks is delayed as development of shrinkage behavior slows down when the thickness of the track is large, and therefore the tensile strength of the concrete increases with age. Another reason might be that the restraining effect of the concrete bed of the track is small when the thickness of the track is large.<br> In addition, to control the propagation of shrinkage cracks, the position and size of crack induced joints were investigated. Based on the numerical simulation results, it was found that shrinkage cracks can be vertically generated when the sectional defect range is set to about 10%.

<p>This paper presents the results of the investigation of a new method for evaluating the quality of the upper surface of concrete slabs with a surface water absorption test (SWAT) developed by the authors. Methods to measure the moisture content of concrete at the depth of 5mm from the surface were investigated considering parameters such as W/C, type of cement and curing conditions. It was found that the moisture content of concrete at the depth of 5 mm from the casting surface can be detected by the HI-100 moisture tester (manufactured by Kett) and the concrete can be judged to be sufficiently dry when the count value of the device is below 120. When the count value was below 120, the quality of the concrete at the upper surface of the slab could be evaluated by using the cumulative water absorption amount over a duration of 100 seconds. In conclusion, the count value of 120 can be used as an index for detecting the decrease in scaling resistance of concrete due to micro-cracking at the surface.</p>

A multiple protection durable concrete mix design with blast furnace slag cement and expansive additive was applied in Shinkesen Ohashi deck girder bridge RC slab construction which is highly susceptible to deterioration due to aggressive environment in Tohoku region. The present study aims at evaluating the cracking risk of Shinkesen Ohashi RC slab concrete. In this context, laboratory investigations were conducted to measure the free autogenous shrinkage and restrained expansion along with setting time and time dependent compressive strength development for the same concrete mix. Simultaneously, FEM numerical simulations were conducted to analyze volume changes of restrained concrete members utilizing experimentally obtained material properties, and verified by experimental results.
