<p>Methylcyclohexane (MCH) is a promising candidate for use as a liquid organic hydrogen carrier, but is isomerized into undesirable five-membered-ring compounds with similar boiling points to MCH, so purification requires selective conversion of the five-membered-ring compounds without reaction of the MCH. We found that an Ir/SiO<sub>2</sub> catalyst efficiently promoted the selective hydrogenolysis of methylcyclopentane (MCP), a model five-membered-ring compound, in the presence of excess MCH in the reaction system. Ir/SiO<sub>2</sub> and Rh/SiO<sub>2</sub> catalysts provided high conversions in the hydrogenolysis of MCP at 200 °C, whereas almost no reaction of MCH occurred. In contrast, Pt/SiO<sub>2</sub> catalyst was almost inactive in the hydrogenolysis of both MCP and MCH at 200 °C. The difference in reactivities for the Ir/SiO<sub>2</sub> and Rh/SiO<sub>2</sub> catalysts can be explained by the relatively high strain energy and formation enthalpy of MCP compared to MCH. The Ir/SiO<sub>2</sub> catalyst also preferentially promoted the hydrogenolysis of ethylcyclopentane, which is a more realistic impurity, in the presence of excess MCH.</p>

<p>Hierarchical structure was successfully created in YNU-5 zeolite by a direct base-treatment. Although the unmodified YNU-5 catalyst was significantly deactivated by heavy coking in hexane cracking, the dealuminated catalyst was much less deactivated. Furthermore, the mesopore/micropore hierarchical structure in the YNU-5 zeolite catalyst suppressed deactivation more than the non-hierarchical, dealuminated YNU-5 with a similar Si/Al ratio. An increase in hexane conversion was also observed for the YNU-5 with hierarchical structure.</p>

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>In the methanol‐to‐olefins (MTO) reaction, product flexibility is important for meeting the fluctuating chemicals demands. In this paper, the catalytic performance of recently reported zeolites having 12‐ring pores, such as boroaluminosilicate CON‐type zeolite ([Al,B]‐CON), MCM‐68, and YNU‐5 zeolites, in the MTO reaction was compared to understand the relationship between zeolite framework and product selectivity. The catalytic performance of the synthesized zeolites was compared with that of Beta, mordenite, and ZSM‐5. The highest selectivities for propylene and butylenes were achieved over MCM‐68. The highest propylene‐to‐ethylene ratio in the products was obtained over [Al,B]‐CON. ZSM‐5 and [Al,B]‐CON exhibited a superior ability to suppress coke formation compared to Beta, mordenite, MCM‐68, and YNU‐5.</jats:p>

<p>The isopropylation of naphthalene (NP) over USY zeolite (FAU06, SiO<sub>2</sub>/Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> = 6) gave all eight possible diisopropylnaphthalene (DIPN) isomers: β,β- (2,6- and 2,7-), α,β- (1,3-, 1,6-, and 1,7-), and α,α- (1,4- and 1,5-). The catalyses are operated under kinetic and/or thermodynamic controls depending on the reaction temperatures because the cavities of FAU topology are wide enough to form all DIPN isomers. Enhanced selectivities for β,β-DIPN were observed at the early stages at 200, 250, and 300 °C although the selectivities decreased with the increasing periods, accompanying the increase in α,α- and α,β-DIPN. The enhancement occurs under new types of thermodynamic controls through thermodynamically preferred transition states to β,β-DIPN. Triisopropylnaphthalene (TriIPN) isomers are also formed in the isopropylation. Unstable α,α,β-TriIPN (1,4,6- and 1,3,5-) is predominantly formed at lower temperatures; however, decreased with the increase of stable α,β,β-TriIPN (1,3,6- and 1,3,7-) at higher temperatures. The predominant formation of 1,4,6-TriIPN was also observed in the initial stages in the range of 200, 250 and 300 °C, as reaction period was increased, while the selectivity for the isomer was decreased with concomitant increase in the selectivities for the other isomers. These changes of the selectivities operated under kinetic and/or thermodynamic controls. Large cavities of the zeolite allow the formation of all TriIPN isomers without steric restriction.</p>

In this study, a global kinetic model for Standard SCR reaction applicable to Cu-CHA and Cu-AFX under steady state conditions was developed and the simulation results in Standard SCR reactions over honeycomb catalysts were compared with test data. The Cu-AFX also showed the same Standard SCR reaction scheme as the well-known Cu zeolite catalysts have. A high-silica SSZ-39 zeolite with an Si/Al molar ratio as high as 16 and with a particle size as low as 300 nm has been directly synthesized by tuning both alkali and water contents in the synthesis mixture, followed by adding relatively high-silica FAU crystals.

Higher propylene production inside fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) units is strongly desired to satisfy the increasing demand for petrochemical feedstock in recent years. Although propylene production can be increased via physical mixing of a suitable catalyst containing ZSM-5 (commonly referred to as additive) with FCC catalyst, this technique is usually associated with increased amount of distillate containing heavy fuel oil such as slurry oil (SLO). In this study, the effect of aluminum phosphate ([Al-P]) as a new matrix component was investigated. The use of an additive with FCC catalyst containing [Al-P] successfully formed liquefied petroleum gas containing propylene in higher yield compared with conventional FCC catalyst containing rare-earth, and suppressed the undesirable increase in SLO yield. This catalytic system has high potential for use in FCC units.

To control the acid sites distribution in MCM-68 zeolite catalyst, phosphate-loaded MCM-68 catalyst was prepared by impregnation with aqueous solution of (NH4)(2)HPO4 onto MCM-68 and subsequent calcination. Phosphate impregnation was effective for increasing the selectivity to propylene and butylenes. The propylene/ethylene ratio in the products was significantly increased by phosphate modification. The considerable enhancement of the yields of propylene and butylenes could be attributed to diminution of stronger acid sites, especially the acid sites distributed on the external surface of MCM-68 catalyst. Furthermore, phosphate-modified MCM-68 showed high resistance to coke formation, indicating this modification technique is useful to obtain long-lived catalysts in DTO reaction. Herein, we report the preparation of potassium chabazite (K-CHA) zeolite nanocrystals with enhanced base-catalytic performance using a bead-milling and postmilling-recrystaization technique. Particles as small as 60 nm were produced by this approach. The surface area of the downsized K-CHA samples showed a significant improvement, increasing from 11 m(2) g(-1) to 65 m(2) g(-1). The catalytic activity of the K-CHA nanocrystals in the Knoevenagel condensation of benzaldehyde with ethyl cyanoacetate was found to be twofold higher than that of the raw and the milled samples, achieving 80% product yield within a reaction time of 60 min. In addition, the enhanced cataIytic behavior of the K-CHA nanocrystal, despite possessing Low surface area relative to the intermediate milled sample, is attributable to the postmilling-recrystallization step, which played a pivotal role in restoring the crystallinity to around 80%.

Improving the selectivity of zeolite catalysts over a wide variety of reactions without diminution of their catalytic activity requires both shortening the diffusion path of guest molecules within the micropores and selective deactivation of the external acid sites. In this work, the former was achieved by mechanochemical bead-milling treatment of micron-sized ZSM-5 zeolite and subsequent recrystallization, and the latter by the selective removal of framework Al and silica-alumina species on the external surface of ZSM-5 nanoparticles via hydrothermal treatment with a concentrated HNO3 aqueous solution. The modified ZSM-5 nanoparticles showed higher propylene yields as well as high resistance to coke formation during hexane cracking. Significant changes in the Bronsted and Lewis acid sites on the external surface of the treated ZSM-5 were also observed using FT-IR with CO and collidine as probe molecules.

Mesoporous silica has been used as a heterogeneous support for catalysts; however, asymmetric induction by the helicity of inorganic mesoporous silica itself has not yet been achieved. P- and M-helical mesoporous silica was found to act as a chiral inorganic trigger for asymmetric autocatalysis to afford (S) and (R)-pyrimidyl alkanol with >99.5% ee, respectively.

The acid sites associated with the external surface of zeolite particles are responsible for undesirable consecutive reactions, such as isomerization, alkylation, and oligomerization, resulting in a lower selectivity to a target product; therefore, the selective modification (deactivation) of the external surface of zeolite particles has been an important issue in zeolite science. Here, a new method for surface deactivation of zeolite catalyst was tested via a mechanochemical approach using powder composer. Postsynthetic mechanochemical treatment of ZSM-5 zeolite causes a selective deactivation of catalytically active sites existing only on the external surface, as a potentially useful catalyst for highly selective production of p-xylene.
