<p>In this paper, we propose a sensor node using a unidirectional harmonic antenna that can acquire remote sensor information without complex digital circuits. The antenna suitable for the harmonic sensor node is characterized by utilizing a wideband E-shaped element to suppress pattern degradation at harmonic frequencies. First, through basic investigations where the sensor is modeled as a variable voltage source, we demonstrate that sensor voltage information can be remotely detected based on the transmission zero frequency. Next, using a sensor node incorporating a temperature sensor and energy harvesting circuit as an example, we show that the temperature in a remote location can be detected from the stopband frequency, thereby verifying the effectiveness of the proposed method. These findings are validated through harmonic balance analysis, electromagnetic field simulations, and RF circuit simulations.</p>

In this paper, a concept of non-contact PIM evaluation
method using balanced transmission lines is proposed for impedancematched PIM measurement systems. In order to evaluate the PIM characteristics of a MSL by using its image model, measurement system using balanced transmission line is introduced. In non-contact PIM measurement, to reduce undesirable PIM generation by metallic contact and the PIM-degradation in repeated measurements, a non-contact connector which is applicable without any design changes in DUT is introduce. The threedimensional balun composed of U-balun and balanced transmission line is also proposed so that it can be applicable to conventional unbalanced PIM measurement systems. In order to validate the concept of the proposed system, a sample using nickel producing high PIM is introduced. In order to avoid the effect of the non-contact connection part on observed PIM, a sample-configuration that PIM-source exists outside of the non-contact connection part is introduced. It is also shown using a sample using copper that, nickel-sample can be clearly differentiated in PIM characteristics while it is equivalent to low-PIM sample in scattering-parameter characteristics. Finally, by introducing the TRL-calibration and by extracting inherent DUTcharacteristics from whole-system characteristics, a method to estimate the PIM characteristics of DUT which cannot be taken directly in measurement is proposed. -

This paper shows a high-gain planar deployable antenna ensuring air-gap to fold the antenna instead of commonly used way of folding transmission line. The air-gap works effectively not mechanically but also electrically. Proposed antenna has the volume constraints of folded width W, depth D, and height H, which are less than 150 mm and high directivity gain of 16.3 dBi.

We propose a three-dimensional balun with a balanced non-contact connector in this letter. Both measurement and simulation results show that the proposed connector has good reflection below -20 dB and transmission of almost 0 dB over a 14.6 % fractional bandwidth in the 2 GHz band.

This paper proposes a passive harmonic tag that modulates sensor information on the pass-band width in the 2.5 GHz / 5.0 GHz bands. It incorporates an energy harvester that uses the DC output from the frequency doubler. The system employs two independent antennas for downlink and uplink communication and utilizes an attenuator to achieve wideband impedance matching. In this paper, the sensor is modeled as a small DC cell with a potentiometer for basic considerations. The experimental results show that the sensor voltage in the remote tag is successfully extracted at a 6-meters spacing between the base-station antennas. Additionally, it is demonstrated that it takes 12 minutes to charge the capacitor in the harvester to over 1V.

This letter proposes a concept of residual noise reduction when using multiple testers for non-contact passive intermodulation (PIM) measurements with near field sensing for array antennas. As described herein, the harmonic balance method and the finite difference time domain method are used for simulation. Examination is conducted for third-order PIMs in two-tone testing in the 2 GHz band. Simulation results indicate that the PIM noise which is weaker than the residual PIM of each tester becomes detectable when using the proposed method. The concept is validated further through experimentation using an equivalent array circuit in the 2 GHz band.

<p>In the passive intermodulation (PIM) measurement of microstrip lines using non-contact planar connector, this letter presents a proper sample length for the 3rd-order PIM measurement due to closely frequency-spaced transmission waves. Our experimental study using nickel-plated samples as a distributed PIM source reveals that a spacing between non-contact connectors should be a quarter guided wavelength in order to suppress the effect of non-contact connectors on the PIM measurement results and maximize the observed reverse PIM. We also demonstrate a circuit-network simulation using the harmonic balance method, which agrees well with and validates the experiments.</p>

The proposed passive chipless harmonic RFID tag composed of single antenna is able to produce transmissionzero depending on the built-in sensor voltage. To allow wide frequency shift, a circular-disk dipole antenna with broadband characteristics is employed. All the circuits are designed as sufficiently small to be built on its one-side element disk. For basic consideration, a variable DC-voltage source is used as an equivalent model of sensors. As described in this paper, characteristics of the antenna and circuit examined in 2.45 GHz/4.9 GHz band are presented through an electromagnetic simulation and a RF-circuit simulation with harmonic balance method, and partially measurements.

In this paper, the concept of retrodirective harmonic tag using the Van-Atta array is proposed. Its effectiveness is evaluated through experiments using a 2-element patch antenna for each subset-antenna, where the 2nd harmonics was used for the uplink channel. The experiments are conducted in 2.5 GHz and 5.0 GHz for a basic consideration. It is shown that the coverage range was 3-times broaden by using the proposed retrodirective harmonic tag in comparison with the one without the retrodirective function. It is also presented that the effectiveness was also confirmed in the bistatic measurement.

This paper proposed a harmonic Van Atta array using a dual-band omni-directional pattern antenna for gain enhancement in the horizontal direction. Its characteristics are verified through simulation. It is found that a monostatic scattering pattern shows a gain increase regardless of the direction of the arriving wave, compared to a harmonic antenna composed of a single element. Additionally, the bistatic scattering pattern demonstrates retrodirective characteristics for the arriving waves, although significant scattering is observed in directions other than the incident wave direction.

In this letter, we propose the variable low-PIM termination composed of a voltage-controlled IM-source, a fixed attenuator, and a linear attenuator. The design method for evaluating PIM-level of the fixed attenuator is presented in order not to limit the variable range of entire termination. It is possible to maintain low-PIM performance in spite of using active voltage-controlled IM-source, whose IM level is extremely high. This termination is used for a dynamic residual noise identification for PIM measurement systems by observing the saturation value for voltage sweep. The validity is confirmed by experiments in 2 GHz band.

A small termination with non-contact connector is proposed for the non-contact PIM measurement using balanced transmission line in this paper. It consists of a meander planar balanced-transmission line with resistive termination, and vias to suppress the coupling between adjacent transmission lines. Basic characteristics of the proposed termination simulated by the FDTD simulation are presented and validated through the experiments.

In this paper, non-contact NM measurement method using a coaxial tube is expanded to a small anechoic box. We used printed dipole antenna terminated with a resistive matched load as sample. The validation of measured NM level is confirmed by the estimation that obtained from measured mutual coupling between antennas. By compensation of PIM level, it is confirmed that an uniform value independent of the position of sample is obtained.

In this letter, we propose a partial impedance-matching method using a two-strip resonator for noncontact Passive Intermodulation (PIM) measurements using a coaxial tube. It is shown that the strip closer to the inner tube of the coaxial tube is dominant in the observed PIM characteristics while both strips are excited equally. The ideal efficiency of power to each strip is 50%, which is a significant improvement in comparison with conventional methods.

A low-profile four-beam switched array antenna for mobile terminals is proposed in this paper, A flat antenna concept modeled as a square magnetic line current array is realized by thin trapezoidal cavity elements. A unidirectional beam is obtained which can be redirected by alternating input terminals of the hybrid coupler, Element characteristics are calculated approximately using a cavity model with the two-dimensional finite-element method. Input characteristics and radiation pattern of the array antenna are evaluated by experiments.
