<p>Direct toluene electro-hydrogenation is gaining considerable attention for storing and transporting large amounts of energy. When a proton exchange membrane (PEM) is used in this system, dragged water molecules migrate with the protons from the anode to the cathode, and water inhibits the toluene hydrogenation reaction at the cathode. An anion exchange membrane (AEM) is expected to facilitate the migration of water from the cathode to the anode, and less water suppresses the side reactions. In this study, the quantity of water reaching the cathode is determined. Further, direct toluene electro-hydrogenation without side reactions except hydrogen generation is successfully performed using the AEM. Moreover, optimization of the catalyst loading results in an improved current efficiency exceeding 1.5 mg cm<sup>−2</sup>. This technology is valuable as a first step in direct toluene electro-hydrogenation using AEM.</p>

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) has attracted considerable attention in recent years as a means to produce hydrogen. However, one problem associated with AWE is the increase in overpotential at high current densities, which is attributed to bubble coverage on the electrode surface. It is therefore important to understand the bubble generation behavior to ultimately reduce the overpotential. In this study, a method was established to measure the resistance components from the electrolytic reaction and bubble coating separately based on the use of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results were related to the bubble generation behavior on a Ni electrode, as observed using a high-speed camera. Consequently, a model for the degradation of the electrolytic efficiency due to bubble generation was devised, and the effect of the bubble coverage layer was quantitatively evaluated.

The effects of vertical Lorentz forces generated by an external magnetic field applied perpendicular to the inherent electric field on the oxygen evolution reaction conducted on a Ni wire are investigated using cyclic voltammetry, impedance measurements, and particle image velocimetry (PIV). Both downward and upward Lorentz forces provide smaller overpotentials than that generated in their absence. Based on a dual -bubble layer model for reactant transfer, we find that the diffusion resistance of the hydroxide ions and increased ohmic resistance (after iR correction) induced by the layer of bubbles attached to the electrode surface are most effectively alleviated by the downward Lorentz force, while the charge -transfer resistance is retained. Furthermore, the generated bubbles have smaller average diameters. By using PIV measurements, we find that stronger shear stresses induced by the faster flow of the electrolyte in the vicinity of the working electrode facilitate the detachment of bubbles from the electrode surface.

In alkaline water electrolysis, reverse currents are reported to occur after rapid cell voltage change due to the electrodes oxidation state difference and such currents lead to electrodes degradation. The reverse current problems can be more severe in practical applications with larger electrode sizes and larger numbers of cells. In this study, reverse current with changes in the oxidation state of electrodes and potential distribution aftersudden shutdown were analyzed based on a multi-physical simulation considering an electronic and ionic conduction in practical-scale. The effects of stack height, number of cells, and ionic resistance through the manifold on the reverse current distribution were investigated. The numerical results reveal that, especially under the condition of low manifold resistance and higher stack height, the discharge current extremely concentrated near the bottom of the edge electrode. Alkaline water electrolyzers use porous diaphragms to separate the gases produced in the two compartments of the cell while enabling ionic conductivity between them. The porosity level of the membrane poses a trade-off between its capability to prevent gas crossover and its ability to facilitate ionic conductivity. The high porosity of the membrane enhances ionic conductivity, but it also increases the rate of undesirable gas crossover. This study introduces a unique diaphragm that exhibits gas permeation anisotropy or "selectivity," which inhibits gas permeation to a greater extent in one direction than the other. Interestingly, the membrane maintains high ionic conductivity, comparable to that of the commercial Zirfon Perl UTP500 membrane. The gas permeation anisotropy arises from the structural design of the membrane, in which one side is smoother and denser than the other. Gas purity measurements for the produced gas streams are conducted under different operation loads, confirming the gas permeation anisotropy of the membrane. The purity of the produced target gas can be improved simply by positioning the membrane in a certain orientation between the two electrodes. Additionally, the membrane demonstrated exceptional durability under industrial operating conditions, maintaining a consistently high level of performance for more than 900 h.

Toluene (TL)-methylcyclohexane (MCH) organic hydride is one of the most promising carrier candidates for the large-scale transport and storage of hydrogen. TL Direct electrohydrogenation electrolyzers based on solid polymer electrolyte membrane technology exhibit significant advantages in terms of energy efficiency compared with the conventional TL hydrogenation method. Mass transfer in the catalyst layer is a crucial aspect of the performance of these electrochemical devices. In this study, experiments were conducted using catalyst-coated membranes with various thicknesses to control the catalyst loading (carbon-supported platinum/ ruthenium alloy) and investigate its influence on the mass transfer properties and electrolytic performance of a TL direct electrohydrogenation electrolyzers. The current efficiency was also evaluated for TL concentrations between 1% and 100% in the cathode reactant. The results indicated than an optimum thickness of the cathode catalyst layer corresponding to catalyst loadings of 1.4-1.6 mg cm-2 could maximize the current efficiency of the electrolyzer. The presence of hydrogen gas generated as a side reaction in the high-TL concentration range and high MCH concentrations in the low-TL concentration range are the main factors contributing to a decrease in current efficiency.

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) requires low current densities (2.0 A cm(-2), and the tertiary alcohol effect was stable over several hours. The decomposition product of TBA was not detected after electrolysis at 3.0 A cm(-2) for 10 h. We clarified that the addition of tertiary alcohols will improve the current density and productivity of the AWE system.

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) can only operate efficiently at a relatively low current density of up to 0.6 A cm(-2) because bubbles cover the electrode surface at high current densities. Generally, the upper limit of current density in an electrochemical reaction is determined by the mass transfer of the reactant. Here, we propose a dual bubble layer model for the reactant transfer resistance of the oxygen evolution reaction in AWE. Using simple cylindrical nickel electrodes of different diameters, we conducted electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and microscopic observations with a high-speed video camera. The relationship between the polarization curve of the oxygen evolution reaction in AWE and the mass transfer resistance of hydroxide ions was investigated. At current densities above 0.5 A cm(-2), the bubble layer completely covered the electrode surface. This bubble layer consisted of two layers: an inner one formed by numerous primary bubbles generated on the electrode, and an outer one formed by coalesced large bubbles. The outer layer induces an additional solution resistance, R-sb. Changes in R-sb under various conditions were successfully explained by the thickness and void fraction of the bubble layer, conductivity of the solution, and tortuosity through the gap between bubbles. The inner layer resists the diffusion of hydroxide ions, and the resistance to hydroxide ion transfer through it (Rd) was modeled using the Warburg impedance element with a finite-length diffusion boundary. The charge-transfer resistance at the electrode surface (R-ct) is roughly inversely proportional to the current density. This result indicates R-ct is less sensitive to bubble coverage and almost all electrode surfaces are active in electrochemical reaction. The results showed that Rd increases with current density as much as Rct when the current density exceeds 1.0 A cm(-2). Up to a high current density of 2.5 A cm(-2), the change in polarization curve (delta E/delta i) could be quantitatively explained by the sum of the bulk solution resistance, R-s0, additional solution resistance R-sb in the gaps between large bubbles, diffusion resistance Rd in the inner bubble layer, and charge-transfer resistance R-ct at the electrode surface.

For polymer electrolyte fuel cell cathodes, highly durable supports are required to prevent catalyst degradation in supports. In this study, as model Pt catalysts, 2–10 wt% Pt was deposited on Magnéli-phase niobium-doped macroporous Ti<sub>4</sub>O<sub>7</sub> (Nb–Ti<sub>4</sub>O<sub>7</sub>) mounted on glassy carbon rods using the coaxial arc plasma deposition method. The morphologies of 2, 5, and 10 wt% Pt catalysts showed the hemisphere fine particles, islands with ca. 1.4 nm diameter and ca. 2.4 nm thickness, and films with ca. 3.3 nm thickness, respectively. During start/stop accelerated durability tests (ADTs) of 5000 cycles following the Fuel Cell Commercialization Conference of Japan protocol, Pt was slightly agglomerated; consequently, the morphologies of the 2, 5, and 10 wt% Pt catalysts were island-like with 3.5 nm thickness, chain bead-like with 4 nm thickness, and film-like with 4 nm thickness, respectively. This slight agglomeration led to good durability during the ADTs. Herein, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mass activity (MA) values at 0.9 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) of the 2, 5, and 10 wt% Pt catalysts were 79, 60, and 36 A g<sub>Pt</sub><sup>-1</sup> after 5000 cycles ADT, respectively, which had declining ratios after 5000 cycles were 32 %, 17 %, and 0 %, respectively. The island-like and film-like Pt/Nb–Ti<sub>4</sub>O<sub>7</sub> presented activity and durability comparable to a Pt/C catalyst, which was 42 A g<sub>Pt</sub><sup>-1</sup> (0.9 V vs. RHE) with a 12 % of declining ratio after the ADTs. The durability of the MA suggested that the different affinity caused by different crystal faces led to the slight agglomeration of 2, 5, and 10 wt%_Pt/Nb–Ti<sub>4</sub>O<sub>7</sub> catalysts. These catalysts showed electrochemical surface areas (ECSAs) of 36, 27, and 29 m<sup>2</sup> g<sup>−1</sup> after the ADTs, with declining ratios as low as 20 %, 6 %, and 0 %, respectively. All Pt/Nb–Ti<sub>4</sub>O<sub>7</sub> catalysts showed higher durability of the ECSAs than the Pt/C catalyst, which was 68 m<sup>2</sup> g<sup>−1</sup> with a 30 % declining ratio after the ADT. Different from common Pt nanoparticle catalysts, which agglomerate into large spherical Pt particles, the slight agglomeration was caused by the interconnection of the deposits and supplemented by a limited increase in the diameter or thickness. The island-like morphology of Pt with a limited thickness presented both high durability and activity among the Pt/Oxide catalysts.

<p>In this study, we propose a highly accurate catalyst evaluation method by improving the time-zero analysis, which has been reported as an activity evaluation method for gas evolution powder catalysts. We refined the extrapolation approach to plot in this study’s time-zero analysis as an analytical method. The Tafel slopes obtained with this method for LaNiO<sub>3</sub> (LNO) were found to be within the reported range, and the data was consistent in catalytic loading range of 2.5–3.3 mg<sub>-LNO</sub> cm<sup>−2</sup>. Using the improved time-zero analysis, the kinetic activity of the gas evolution powder catalyst is possible to be evaluated with high accuracy.</p>

One of the major challenges facing the coupling of alkaline water electrolyzers (AWE) and inherently intermittent renewable energy sources (RES) is the reverse current phenomenon that takes place after shutdown and adversely affects the service life of the electrocatalysts. Herein, this phenomenon was studied experimentally and theoretically. The study showed that the potential of the electrodes on either side of the bipolar plate (BP) changes according to the amount of the reverse charge flowing through the BP during shutdown. In addition, the potential of the electrodes of the middle BP changed relatively faster than that of the other BPs due to the increased reverse current of the middle BP. Moreover, effects of the operating parameters and electrode materials on the reverse current phenomenon are uncovered. The electrolyte circulation during shutdown as well as the high operating temperature increased the reverse current. However, the electrolysis current did not significantly affect the reverse current. Additionally, the origin of the reverse current is mainly the redox reactions of the electrodes during shutdown. Furthermore, the cathode that attached to a robust anode, on the same BP, is subject to more stressors. This study is useful for adapting the AWE to the dynamic operation.

An important difficulty associated with alkaline water electrolysis is the rise in anode overpotential attributable to bubble coverage of the electrode surface. For this study, a system with a high-speed video camera was developed, achieving in-situ observation of bubble generation on an electrode surface, monitoring an area of 1.02 mm(2) at 6000 frames per second. The relation between polarization curve (current density up to 3.0 A cm(-2)) and oxygen bubble generation behavior on nickel electrodes having cylindrical wires and rectangular wires of different sizes (100-300 mu m) was clarified. The generated bubbles slide upward, contacting the electrode surface and detaching at the top edge. Observations indicate that small electrodes have short bubble residence time and thin bubble covering layer on the electrode. <p>The evaluation of the powder catalyst activity is essential for the development of high-performance electrocatalysts for water electrolysis. However, the gas generated therein interferes with the accurate measurement by covering the catalyst surface. In this study, we have developed a new evaluation method for a powder oxide electrocatalyst using an alkaline electrolyte. This measurement and analysis method can obtain the intrinsic catalyst activity with no influence from the generation of bubbles. To establish this method, the electrolyzer for evaluation adopts the interdigit flow field for the <i>forced-flow method</i>, and the two methods, namely <i>time zero analysis</i> and <i>flow rate infinitization analysis</i>, were demonstrated by the extrapolation of the measurement data. As a result, the combination of <i>forced-flow method</i> and <i>time-zero analysis</i> is the best evaluation method for the determination of kinetic current at time zero as the equivalent of the no-generation gas condition.</p>

<p>For electrocatalysts of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a new accelerated durability test (ADT) protocol is presented. The protocol is designed to closely mimic the fluctuations of renewable energies. The unit cycle of the current ADT protocol represents the "ON/OFF" operation mode. In the "ON" step, the electrolyzer operates under a DC current of 0.6 A cm<sup>−2</sup>. In the "OFF" step, the electrocatalyst is subjected to a constant potential that is clearly more cathodic than its OER onset potential (namely, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 V vs. RHE) for 10 or 60 s. The transition from the "ON" state to the "OFF" state occurs through a cathodic linear sweep voltammetry of a fast sweep rate to mimic the sudden changes in the renewable power. A NiCoO<i><sub>x</sub></i>/Ni-mesh electrode was used as a case study. The electrode showed remarkable durability under continuous operation (<i>i</i> = 0.6 A cm<sup>−2</sup>) for about 900 hours. However, it did suffer severe degradation after a certain number of ADT cycles, and the rate of degradation mainly depends on the potential value and the duration of the "OFF" step. Interestingly, the inclusion of the 10-sec open-circuit potential step after the "ON" step clearly mitigates the impact of energy fluctuations on the durability of OER electrocatalysts.</p>

<p>An electrochemical methanol concentration sensor with practicality and reliability has been developed to apply for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) system. The methanol concentration can be estimated simply by the original algorithm based on the Arrhenius law and diffusion limiting current, even though the complex oxidation current characteristics for the methanol concentration and temperature. The oxidation current of methanol shows linearity against the methanol concentration up to 10 wt% (15 mgPt cm<sup>−2</sup> at anode) with quick response. The sensor also has a high durability for 6500 h in the simulated DMFC operating temperature.</p>

An appropriate evaluation of oxide-based compound powders as non-platinum cathodes for polymer electrolyte fuel cells is required to investigate the active sites of oxide-based cathodes for the oxygen reduction reaction. A mixture of carbon black powder as an electro-conductive material with oxide catalysts that had low electrical conductivity was attempted to evaluate the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. An appropriate mixture of carbon black and the oxide catalysts let to the electrochemical activation of the oxide surface by the formation of electron, conduction networks. Using the carbon black mixture, the niobium-added titanium oxides heat-treated at 700 degrees C for 10 min under Ar containing 4% hydrogen without carbon materials were focused on to reveal the dependence of ORR activity on the added amount of niobium. The ORR activity of the niobium-added titanium oxides increased the Nb mole percentage from 0 to 20. This was due to the increase in the ratio of the Ti3+/(Ti4++Ti3+), and suggests that the active sites were Ti3+ and/or oxygen vacancies in the anatase phase. On the other hand, although the ratio of the Ti3+/(Ti4++Ti3+) of the oxide with an Nb mole percentage of 30 was almost twice as that with an Nb mole percentage of 20, the ORR activities were almost the same. This might be responsible for the deposition of the amorphous phase composed of Nb2O5, which consisted of a thin layer on the surface of the oxide particles and had low ORR activity. Toluene-methylcyclohexane organic chemical hydride has been expected as the energy carrier system for the large-scale transport and storage of hydrogen generated from renewable energy. In this study, we improved the performance of toluene direct electro-hydrogenation electrolyzer. The electrolyzer was optimized for cathode flow-field, the chemical-hydrogenation Pt catalyst in cathode flow-field, and the application of fine mesh anode. Porous-carbon flow-field was the best structure as cathode flow-field. Pt particles loaded cathode flow-field confirmed the function of chemical hydrogenation with toluene and hydrogen. Furthermore, the fining of anode mesh also functioned efficiently. Each modification showed the significant improvement of cell voltage and current efficiency. The conversion from toluene to methylcyclohexane with one-through operation achieved 92 -95%.

アニオン交換体である層状複水酸化物をナノ粒子状に制御し、さらにその凝集構造を制御することで、水に高分散させることに成功した。これを用いて色素の吸着除去を行ったところ、分散性の低い層状複水酸化物に比して2–3桁の速度向上が達成された。

三脚型配位子が層状複水酸化物(LDH)の表面水酸基に選択的な結合を形成することを見出した。これを利用し、極めて小さなLDHナノ粒子の合成法を報告した。LDHナノ粒子は大気下でも二酸化炭素による妨害を殆ど受けず、有害アニオンの吸着除去に利用できることを示した。
