Energetic salts are promising materials in the field of energetic materials, and numerous azole derivative salts have been explored over the past two decades. In this study, we synthesized and analyzed five 5-methyl-1H-tetrazole (MTZ) salts: perchlorate, nitrate, chloride, guanidinium (GN), and potassium dihydrate. These salts were characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Among the five salts, the perchlorate salt exhibited the highest calculated density. We also characterized the salts, along with a previously reported sodium salt for comparison, using sealed-cell differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis. Their corresponding exothermic calorific values were ordered as follows: MTZClO<sub>4</sub> ＞ MTZNO<sub>3</sub> ＞ MTZ ＞ MTZCl＞ MTZK・2H<sub>2</sub>O ＞ MTZNa・2H<sub>2</sub>O ＞ MTZGN. The mass losses of MTZClO<sub>4</sub> and MTZGN commenced at higher temperatures compared to that of MTZ, whereas those of MTZNO<sub>3</sub> and MTZCl occurred at lower temperatures than that of MTZ.

Enhancement of the burning performance of ammonium nitrate via cocrystallization

Ammonium nitrate (AN) is a low-cost oxidizer with a low environmental impact; however, its low burning rate limits its application. In this study, a cocrystallization technique was used to enhance the burning performance of AN. An AN/4- amino-1,2,4-triazole (4ATA) cocrystal (molar ratio = 1:1) was prepared, and its crystal structure was investigated using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The friction sensitivity test proved to be sufficiently safe for the treatment of the cocrystal. 5-Amino-1H-tetrazole/strontium nitrate was blended with the AN/4ATA cocrystal or with a simple mixture of AN and 4ATA to evaluate the burning behavior using the deflagration test. The test results showed enhanced burning performance for the composition containing the AN/4ATA cocrystal compared to that containing the mixture of AN and 4ATA. The hygroscopicity test revealed that cocrystallization suppressed the hygroscopicity and also resulted in the phase stabilization of AN, as confirmed from sealed cell-differential scanning calorimetry analysis.

<p>Public opinion surveys have shown that Japanese younger people have lower environmental awareness. Although life events have attracted attention as a factor in such generational differences, it is not clear whether they enhance environmental awareness. On the other hand, environmental education in schools since the 1990s in Japan is expected to increase environmental awareness among young people. In this study, we conducted a questionnaire survey to examine how life events and the experience of environmental education relate to the environmental awareness in Japanese adulthood. As a result, we found that the experience of environmental education, the sharing of housework and the experience of parenting the first child were the factors that decreased the generational differences.</p>

We have published three special issues on “Life Cycle Thinking and Environmental Education” in this journal and one collection of teaching materials as a part of the activities of this workshop. In this commentary and discussion, our activities of the last 13 years are outlined and the current situation and future issues are briefly described.</p>

Six 2,5-diamino-3,6-dicyanopyrazine dyes with medium to long length alkyl chains on their amino groups were newly synthesised and their fundamental properties investigated, including their derivatives, focusing on liquefaction at room temperature. The butyl, pentyl, hexyl, heptyl, octyl, and dodecyl substitutions realised liquefaction of the dye chromophore. These liquid dyes exhibited relatively good fluorescent properties in the liquid state. The dodecyl derivative showed the largest fluorescence efficiency of 0.59 in the liquid state among the derivatives and was used in an organic light-emitting device. The efficient yellow EL emission peaked at 593 nm with a 10 V turn-on voltage of the device and a maximum brightness of 336 cd/m^2 at 14 V.

<p>More than 10 years have passed since the proposal of environmental education incorporating the concept of life cycle thinking (LCT). Some of the related teaching materials have already become implemented as a part of the educational content at schools. On the other hand, there is concern that teachers are constantly busy because various tasks inside and outside the school are increasing in addition to the usual educational activities. In this situation, it is not easy for teachers to introduce new teaching materials that require a lot of tasks to teach new concepts. In 2020, the influences of the new coronavirus have placed a number of restrictions on school activities. As a result, the barriers to introducing new teaching materials have become higher. However, the next one to two years is also a period in which we can expect substantial changes in education at schools due to changes in the social environment. This paper presents some issues in introducing LCT-based environmental education to schools based on the author's experience in its education and research. Then, I discuss the possibility that LCT-based environmental education will contribute to the changes in education that are currently underway or are about to be promoted in schools.</p>

<p>Absorption properties of 13 bisazomethine dyes in a crystalline state were studied by optical waveguide spectroscopy. Their solid-state absorption spectra were found to shift bathochromically relative to those in solution with no remarkable change in a spectral shape. The observed spectral shifts were characterized in terms of two intermolecular interactions, conformational change and exciton interaction, on the basis of the crystal structure. Solid-state fluorescence properties of the diethylamino derivatives were also examined for their electronic characterization. The characteristic two-dimensional staircase structure, one of the proposed structures of J-aggregates, was found to play a significant role in the bathochromic spectral shift of all the bisazomethine derivatives.</p>
