<p>In this study, a method for detecting and tracking hydrogen and oxygen bubbles during alkaline water electrolysis was developed using Faster R-CNN and DeepSORT. The images required for CNN training were automatically generated by a pseudo-bubble image generation algorithm specifically developed for the purpose of this study. The method was applied to the results of observations on alkaline water electrolysis obtained under various current densities and wire electrode diameters. Evaluation of detection performance using a confusion matrix showed that for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at a current density of 1.0 A cm<sup>−2</sup> and a wire electrode diameter of 200 µm, the method achieved a precision of 1.00, recall of 0.840, and <i>F</i><sub>1</sub> score of 0.940, indicating very high detection performance. For the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), bubbles were detected almost perfectly under all conditions, with all detection metrics exceeding 1.00. The proposed method was approximately 20000 times faster than humans. Bubble diameter distribution, total volume, total number, and Sauter mean diameter were obtained and quantitatively assessed, and the relationships between current density and electrode diameter for both HER and OER have been discussed. This method enables accurate, rapid, and automatic quantitative evaluation of visualization results from various alkaline water electrolysis observations, which were previously difficult and labor-intensive to perform manually.</p>

Self-repairing catalysts are useful for achieving alkaline water electrolyzers with long lifetimes under intermittent operation. However, rational methodologies for designing self-repairing catalysts have not yet been established. Herein, hybrid cobalt hydroxide nanosheets (Co-ns), with a high deposition (repairing) rate, and β-FeOOH nanorods (Fe-nr), with high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) ability, are electrostatically self-assembled into composite catalysts. This strategy is developed to integrate multifunctionality in self-repairing catalysts. Positively charged Co-ns and negatively charged Fe-nr form uniform composites when dispersed in an electrolyte. These composites are electrochemically deposited on a nickel electrode by electrolysis at 800 mA cm−2. Co-ns form a conductive mesoporous assembly of CoOOH nanosheets as a support. Fe-nr are then distributed on the CoOOH nanosheets as active sites for the OER. Because of the high deposition rate of Co-ns, the amount of Fe-nr deposited increases 22 times compared to when Fe-nr is deposited alone, and the OER current density increases 14 times compared to that of Co-ns alone. The composite self-repair catalyst shows the highest activity and durability under an accelerated durability test (ADT), and its degradation rate decreases from 84 μV cycle−1 (Fe-nr only) to 60 μV cycle−1 (composite catalyst) under ADT conditions without repair.

<p>Direct toluene electro-hydrogenation is gaining considerable attention for storing and transporting large amounts of energy. When a proton exchange membrane (PEM) is used in this system, dragged water molecules migrate with the protons from the anode to the cathode, and water inhibits the toluene hydrogenation reaction at the cathode. An anion exchange membrane (AEM) is expected to facilitate the migration of water from the cathode to the anode, and less water suppresses the side reactions. In this study, the quantity of water reaching the cathode is determined. Further, direct toluene electro-hydrogenation without side reactions except hydrogen generation is successfully performed using the AEM. Moreover, optimization of the catalyst loading results in an improved current efficiency exceeding 1.5 mg cm<sup>−2</sup>. This technology is valuable as a first step in direct toluene electro-hydrogenation using AEM.</p>

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) has attracted considerable attention in recent years as a means to produce hydrogen. However, one problem associated with AWE is the increase in overpotential at high current densities, which is attributed to bubble coverage on the electrode surface. It is therefore important to understand the bubble generation behavior to ultimately reduce the overpotential. In this study, a method was established to measure the resistance components from the electrolytic reaction and bubble coating separately based on the use of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results were related to the bubble generation behavior on a Ni electrode, as observed using a high-speed camera. Consequently, a model for the degradation of the electrolytic efficiency due to bubble generation was devised, and the effect of the bubble coverage layer was quantitatively evaluated.

Preparation of high-performance and durable electrocatalysts for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis is a crucial step toward the broad implementation of this technology. Here, we present an easily tunable, one-step hydrothermal method for the preparation of Ni-based (NiX, X = Co, Fe) layered double hydroxide nanoparticles (LDHNPs) for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), using tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (Tris–NH2) for particle growth control. The LDHNPs are used as building blocks of mesoporous mixed metal oxides (MMOs) with a block copolymer template (Pluronic F127), followed by thermal treatment at 250 °C. NiX MMOs have a significantly larger surface area compared to the analogous LDHNPs. NiX LDHNPs and MMOs exhibit excellent performance and long-term cycling stability, making them promising OER catalysts. Moreover, this versatile method can be easily tailored and scaled up for the preparation of platinum group metal-free electrocatalysts for other reactions of interest, which highlights the relevance of this work to the field of electrocatalysis.

A beta-FeOOH nanorod was investigated as a highly active and durable self-repairing anode catalyst for alkaline water electrolysis with repeated potential change, simulating power from renewable energy. The beta-FeOOH nanorod was synthesized by coprecipitation, using an organic buffer of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane. The beta-FeOOH nanorods dispersed in 1 M KOH aq. as an alkaline electrolyte were electrochemically deposited on a nickel electrode by a constant current electrolysis. The deposited beta-FeOOH nanorods formed bundled network on the surface of the electrode and exhibited high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, where the minimum OER overpotential was 285 mV at 100 mA cm(-2). The durability of the nickel electrode coated with beta-FeOOH nanorods were tested via shutdown-based accelerated durability test, where electrolysis at 600 mA cm(-2) for 1 min and the potential control at 0.5 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) for 1 min are repeated in the presence of beta-FeOOH nanorod in the electrolyte. The catalyst coated electrode showed the low OER overpotential for 4000 cycles, whereas the OER overpotential of a bare nickel electrode increased within only 200 cycles. The beta-FeOOH nanorod efficiently suppressed the corrosion of the nickel substrate and the layer of beta-FeOOH nanorod was continuously repaired by accumulating the beta-FeOOH nanorod from the electrolyte. Therefore, the beta-FeOOH nanorod is useful as a self-repairing anode catalyst with high OER activity and durability. [GRAPHICS] .

<p>The evaluation of the powder catalyst activity is essential for the development of high-performance electrocatalysts for water electrolysis. However, the gas generated therein interferes with the accurate measurement by covering the catalyst surface. In this study, we have developed a new evaluation method for a powder oxide electrocatalyst using an alkaline electrolyte. This measurement and analysis method can obtain the intrinsic catalyst activity with no influence from the generation of bubbles. To establish this method, the electrolyzer for evaluation adopts the interdigit flow field for the <i>forced-flow method</i>, and the two methods, namely <i>time zero analysis</i> and <i>flow rate infinitization analysis</i>, were demonstrated by the extrapolation of the measurement data. As a result, the combination of <i>forced-flow method</i> and <i>time-zero analysis</i> is the best evaluation method for the determination of kinetic current at time zero as the equivalent of the no-generation gas condition.</p>

<p>A “heat- and mass-balance analysis” for a direct-methanol fuel cell (DMFC) system, accounting for actual experimental data and the heat- and mass transfer of the DMFC, is proposed to facilitate the usage of general spreadsheet software. The spreadsheet software enables the use of various functions on the data and visualizes the data using graphs. In addition, this application has a light computational load and is thus easy to implement in system control. The output of the analysis is the transfer of material and heat within the DMFC, as well as the heat balance and electrical efficiency of the DMFC. The analysis was verified using experimental data of the DMFC system, and the results of the verification indicated that the analysis could predict heat balance and system efficiency with accuracies of approximately 3.7 and 2.5 %, respectively. Further, the analysis was used to investigate the effect of stack temperature on the electrical efficiency of the system, and the results showed that the optimum stack temperature at a system power of 130 W was 60 °C and the electrical efficiency at that temperature was 21.8 % HHV.</p>

<p>In this study, we propose a highly accurate catalyst evaluation method by improving the time-zero analysis, which has been reported as an activity evaluation method for gas evolution powder catalysts. We refined the extrapolation approach to plot in this study’s time-zero analysis as an analytical method. The Tafel slopes obtained with this method for LaNiO<sub>3</sub> (LNO) were found to be within the reported range, and the data was consistent in catalytic loading range of 2.5–3.3 mg<sub>-LNO</sub> cm<sup>−2</sup>. Using the improved time-zero analysis, the kinetic activity of the gas evolution powder catalyst is possible to be evaluated with high accuracy.</p>

<p>Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolysis has received significant attention as a suitable technology for hydrogen production because it can operate at a high current density, is compact, and can produce high purity hydrogen. However, this process involves high costs because precious metal catalysts are required to maintain high performance. To overcome this challenge and develop new materials to replace precious metals, the complex overlapping overpotentials must be considered separately. In a previous study, a structure that uses double reference electrodes by shifting the electrode arrangement was proposed for separating the overpotentials. This structure allows the electrolyte surface potential to be measured by a reference electrode far from the electrode by changing the potential distribution. However, the structure may cause a complicated three-dimensional potential distribution, which may adversely affects accurate measurement of the electrode potential. Therefore, the potential distribution was analyzed and evaluated using three-dimensional multiphysics simulations incorporating proton and electron conduction. As a result, a remarkable phenomenon called potential wraparound, which affects the distribution of electric potential, was observed. Furthermore, a significant finding was that this effect can be suppressed by changing the shape of the electrode.</p>

It has been reported that the Ni anode electrode used in alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is degraded when the fluctuating electricity produced by renewable energy (wind and solar power) systems is used. To develop alternative materials, we focused on zirconium oxide because of its high chemical stability, and investigated its catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on zirconium oxides on a zirconium plate fabricated by both air oxidation (ZrO2/Zr) and arc-plasma deposition (ZrO2/Zr_APD). From cross-sectional observations and electrochemical results, the mixed tetragonal and monoclinic structure of ZrO2 was related to its catalytic activity for the OER. ZrO2/Zr_APD showed obviously a higher activity than ZrO2/Zr. The reason for this is that the particles are better dispersed in ZrO2/Zr_APD than in ZrO2/Zr, so the electrochemical surface area of ZrO2/ Zr_APD seems to be larger than that of ZrO2/Zr.

Niobium-added titaniumoxide is a promising candidate as a substitute carbon support for cathodes ofPEFCs. Nb- added TiO2 can act as a support for platinum nanoparticles to enhance the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) ac- tivity and durability under acidic conditions. Nb-added TiO2 supports with the desired surface area (10–130 m2 g−1) and conductivity (10−7–10−2 Scm−1) were prepared by changing the amount of Nb and the heat treatment conditions. First, we conducted a systematic investigation with changes in theamount ofniobium addition, heat-treatment temperature, and time under a pure hydrogen atmosphere to reveal the physicochem- ical factors that govern the surface area and conductivity. Finally, we successfully proposed a procedure to pre- pare highly durable Nb-added TiO2 supports with the desired surface area and conductivity by controlling the amount of niobium addition, heat-treatment temperature, and time under hydrogen. The charges of the double layer were almost unchanged after 5000 cycles of an accelerated durability test (ADT).

An electrochemical methanol concentration sensor with practicality and reliability has been developed to apply for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) system. The methanol concentration can be estimated simply by the original algorithm based on the Arrhenius law and diffusion limiting current, even though the complex oxidation current characteristics for the methanol concentration and temperature. The oxidation current of methanol shows linearity against the methanol concentration up to 10 wt% (15 mgPt cm<sup>−2</sup> at anode) with quick response. The sensor also has a high durability for 6500 h in the simulated DMFC operating temperature.

<p>For electrocatalysts of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a new accelerated durability test (ADT) protocol is presented. The protocol is designed to closely mimic the fluctuations of renewable energies. The unit cycle of the current ADT protocol represents the "ON/OFF" operation mode. In the "ON" step, the electrolyzer operates under a DC current of 0.6 A cm<sup>−2</sup>. In the "OFF" step, the electrocatalyst is subjected to a constant potential that is clearly more cathodic than its OER onset potential (namely, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 V vs. RHE) for 10 or 60 s. The transition from the "ON" state to the "OFF" state occurs through a cathodic linear sweep voltammetry of a fast sweep rate to mimic the sudden changes in the renewable power. A NiCoO<i><sub>x</sub></i>/Ni-mesh electrode was used as a case study. The electrode showed remarkable durability under continuous operation (<i>i</i> = 0.6 A cm<sup>−2</sup>) for about 900 hours. However, it did suffer severe degradation after a certain number of ADT cycles, and the rate of degradation mainly depends on the potential value and the duration of the "OFF" step. Interestingly, the inclusion of the 10-sec open-circuit potential step after the "ON" step clearly mitigates the impact of energy fluctuations on the durability of OER electrocatalysts.</p>

An appropriate evaluation of oxide-based compound powders as non-platinum cathodes for polymer electrolyte fuel cells is required to investigate the active sites of oxide-based cathodes for the oxygen reduction reaction. A mixture of carbon black powder as an electro-conductive material with oxide catalysts that had low electrical conductivity was attempted to evaluate the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. An appropriate mixture of carbon black and the oxide catalysts let to the electrochemical activation of the oxide surface by the formation of electron, conduction networks. Using the carbon black mixture, the niobium-added titanium oxides heat-treated at 700 degrees C for 10 min under Ar containing 4% hydrogen without carbon materials were focused on to reveal the dependence of ORR activity on the added amount of niobium. The ORR activity of the niobium-added titanium oxides increased the Nb mole percentage from 0 to 20. This was due to the increase in the ratio of the Ti3+/(Ti4++Ti3+), and suggests that the active sites were Ti3+ and/or oxygen vacancies in the anatase phase. On the other hand, although the ratio of the Ti3+/(Ti4++Ti3+) of the oxide with an Nb mole percentage of 30 was almost twice as that with an Nb mole percentage of 20, the ORR activities were almost the same. This might be responsible for the deposition of the amorphous phase composed of Nb2O5, which consisted of a thin layer on the surface of the oxide particles and had low ORR activity. IMPROVEMENT OF TOLUENE DIRECT ELECTRO-HYDROGENATION ELECTROLYZER FOR ENERGY CARRIER TECHNOLOGY

Toluene-methylcyclohexane organic chemical hydride has been expected as the energy carrier system for the large-scale transport and storage of hydrogen generated from renewable energy. In this study, we improved the performance of toluene direct electro-hydrogenation electrolyzer. The electrolyzer was optimized for cathode flow-field, the chemical-hydrogenation Pt catalyst in cathode flow-field, and the application of fine mesh anode. Porous-carbon flow-field was the best structure as cathode flow-field. Pt particles loaded cathode flow-field confirmed the function of chemical hydrogenation with toluene and hydrogen. Furthermore, the fining of anode mesh also functioned efficiently. Each modification showed the significant improvement of cell voltage and current efficiency. The conversion from toluene to methylcyclohexane with one-through operation achieved 92 -95%.
