Objective: To report on classes aimed at the learning of “skills” in coping with stress in the health education of junior high school.Activities: A three-hour class on coping with stress was conducted in each class in December 2023 for a total of 102 students in three classes of first graders at a public junior high school. Classes were developed with a focus on group discussions and practical exercises so that students could exchange opinions with their peers based on their own life experiences and so that they could develop their “knowledge” and “skills.”Assessments: Pre- and post-surveys were conducted in each class the week before the first period and the week after the third period, respectively, using a before-and-after comparative research design. The percentage of correct responses to the knowledge test questions about coping with stress was significantly higher in the postsurvey for one of the five questions. Scores on the self-efficacy scale for stress management were not significantly different between the pre- and post-surveys. The percentage of respondents who were “currently stress-free” was lower in the postsurvey than in the presurvey.Recommendations for future activities: To develop “skills” in stress management, it is necessary to further improve the teaching methods that lead to the effective learning of “skills” even in a limited time by providing feedback among teachers and students on the activities in the practical training and by actively using team-teaching from the viewpoint of individualized teaching.

This study aimed to clarify the problems related to students' health and safety at school and identify teachers' needs for learning in a teacher training course by conducting a survey for yogo teachers who were experts in school health and safety. Except for training courses for yogo teachers or health and physical education teachers, there are no compulsory subjects regarding problems related to student health and safety at school. Moreover, previous reports have indicated that general teachers found it difficult to deal with topics related to student health and safety. We surveyed 2,992 yogo teachers randomly selected from across the country and 1,196 responses were received (response rate 40. 0%). The results indicated that mental care, first aid, and developmental disabilities accounted for more than 80% of the problems experienced by yogo teachers related to student health and safety. It was also suggested that the number of years of experience was related to problem perception. Among the topics that needed to be learned at the teacher preparation stage, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, developmental disorders, mental care, allergies, heat stroke, and use of an EpiPen accounted for a high proportion, while chronic diseases, eating disorders, cooperation with other staff (for safety), and orthostatic dysregulation accounted for a low proportion. The present results need to be considered when developing training content required for incumbent teachers and novice teachers, and when discussing the subjects required for teacher training courses. This would also help teachers to respond effectively to problems related to student health and safety at school.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the implementation of health education in a practical teaching seminar for teaching profession, whose full-scale application at four-year universities was started in 2013. We carried out a nationwide mail survey of 158 departments at 152 universities offering courses leading to the junior high school and high school teaching certificate (in health and physical education). The response rate was 43.0% (68/158), and after exclusion of one blank response, 67 cases were analyzed. Among the participants, 71.6% secured time for health education in a practical teaching seminar. The responses were examined to determine whether the contents of the class were considered suitable for a trial health class (62.5%), whether it reflected a health class in teaching practice (45.8%), whether the content was suitable for health education (39.6%), whether or not it reflected teaching methods in health education (37.5%), whether the design was suitable for devising teaching plans for health classes (33.3%), and whether the material was suitable for health education (27.1%). The various class styles included a trial lesson (48.7%), practice (48.0%), a lecture (33.7%), and others (40.2%). These results were considered to indicate that a practical teaching seminar would contribute to teacher training and development through improvement of curricula in the health education field.
