We investigated the method to improve the performance of solar cells that use colloidal quantum dots (QDs) as light absorption layers. By replacing ligands of PbS QDs with iodine, adjusting QD concentration in a solvent suitable for the ligands, and preparing QD films by the sedimentation method, photoelectric conversion efficiency of QD solar cells was improved. It is known that by depositing QDs freely onto a substrate in a solvent, QDs are closest packed to form a superlattice. A suitable solvent that aided the free sedimentation of QDs facilitated the QD superlattice formation. Iodine ligands had narrowed QD spacing, promoting intermediate bands formation in the QD superlattices. QD concentration had affected the film quality. To achieve high performance expected for QD superlattice solar cells in future, it is necessary to develop carrier transport layers that extract carriers from high energy bands originating from excited states in QDs.

We propose a polarization-controlled ultrasmall single-photon emitter that combines a single photon source and an elliptical split ring (SR) type metamaterial element. Simulations using the finite difference time domain method showed that in elliptical metamaterial elements, the annular mode is suppressed and axial electric field oscillations occur preferentially, resulting in upward light emission from the photon source with controlled polarization. We fabricated prototype devices by focused ion beam lithography and PbS quantum dots. Evaluation of the optical properties of the devices revealed that the emission spectrum width was narrower and the emission lifetime was shorter than those of quantum dot ensemble, and that the polarization was controlled along the minor axis of ellipse. These suggested that the quantum dot emission and the metamaterial element resonated as expected. The combination of a single quantum dot and a single elliptical SR-type metamaterial element was shown to have the potential to operate as a polarization-controlled single-photon emitter.

Positioning of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) by nanoholes is applicable to fabricating quantum devices such as quantum circuits. A silica coating technique that facilitates the positioning manages the effective size of QDs while preserving the quantum state inside. In the reverse micelle method, which is commonly used for the silica coating, optical properties deteriorate due to the exposure of QD surface to moisture within the reverse micelle. We studied a thin silica coating on the surface of PbS QDs by pyrolyzing tetraethyl orthosilicate in an organic solvent before forming a thick silica shell by the reverse micelle method. As a result, highly luminous silica-coated PbS QDs with a diameter of about 110 nm were realized.

We report successful fabrication of a superlattice film composed of PbS colloidal quantum dots (QDs) with a three-dimensionally coincident crystal orientation. Faceted QDs with a truncated octahedral shape were prepared and deposited in a solvent on a pyramidal microhole array prepared on a Si (100) substrate. During the deposition, facets of neighboring QDs arranged in contact with each other in the aligned microholes. The three-dimensional crystal orientation alignment was confirmed by X-ray pole figure mapping. Such QD superlattice film with aligned crystal orientation can contribute to the realization of a high energy-conversion efficiency of semiconductor solar cells.
