<p>Understanding forest ecosystems involves knowing the role of organisms in dead trees. Myxomycetes that grow on dead trees disperse spores and reuse dead trees as substrate for reproduction. Compared to research on the interactions between myxomycetes and organisms other than <i>Collembola</i> (e.g., <i>Acari</i>, <i>Diptera</i>, and <i>Coleoptera</i>), studies on the interactions between myxomycetes and collembolans on dead trees are limited. To clarify the relationship between them, myxomycetes and nearby collembolans were collected through the aspiration method. This method allows the simultaneous collection of myxomycete fruiting bodies and collembolans. In the laboratory, the collected specimens were observed under a microscope, and the population density and spore-feeding behavior of collembola were analyzed and compared for each myxomycete. In our study, we identified ten families of collembola residing among myxomycetes on dead trees at the collection site. Notably, eight of these families were observed to consume spores and various components of the fruiting bodies of myxomycetes. Additionally, we conducted an analysis of the interrelationships among three species of myxomycetes, focusing on variations in collembolan populations and their feeding rates. This research represents the first quantitative investigation into the relationship between myxomycetes and collembolans, employing field-based observations and collections to yield our findings.</p>

Biodiversity conservation is an international goal, and endemic species are an important ecological group in terms of conservation biology. In this study, we created a tentative list of Collembola species that are endemic to Japan. We listed species based on their distribution records in a published checklist of Japanese Collembola species, and excluded from the list those recorded overseas according to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. Among 400 species confirmed in Japan including 5 speculated species and 1 possible introduced species, 212 species (53.0%) were considered endemic. Although we applied a data-based approach in this study, our findings are provisional and will require updating as identification methods and distribution records improve over time.

Abstract
Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised. Despite covering all continents, most of the sample-level data come from the European continent (82.5% of all samples) and represent four habitats: woodlands (57.4%), grasslands (14.0%), agrosystems (13.7%) and scrublands (9.0%). We included sampling by soil layers, and across seasons and years, representing temporal and spatial within-site variation in springtail communities. We also provided data use and sharing guidelines and R code to facilitate the use of the database by other researchers. This data paper describes a static version of the database at the publication date, but the database will be further expanded to include underrepresented regions and linked with trait data.

We developed a novel protocol with superior quantitative analysis results for DNA metabarcoding of Collembola, a major soil microarthropod order. Degenerate PCR primers were designed for conserved regions in the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) and 16S ribosomal RNA (mt16S) genes based on published collembolan mitogenomes. The best primer pair was selected based on its ability to amplify each gene, irrespective of the species. DNA was extracted from 10 natural communities sampled in a temperate forest (with typically 25-30 collembolan species per 10 soil samples) and 10 mock communities (with seven cultured collembolan species).

Vast forest areas in eastern Japan have been contaminated with radio-isotopes by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. Radiocesium (radioCs) is known to remain bioavailable in forest ecosystems for a long time, and it is necessary to terminate the cycling process to decontaminate the forest ecosystem. We observed radiocesium concentrations of leaf litter during decomposition on a forest floor where radiocesium (Cs-137) contamination was similar to 155 kBq/m(2).

In this study, we describe an easy and rapid method for non-destructive DNA extraction from a single Collembola individual, without dissection, lysis of the specimen, or purification of extracted DNA. We demonstrate that, after a single specimen has been heat-treated in Tris-EDTA (TE) buffer using a standard thermocycler, the solution can be used for PCR amplification of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene region, typically used for DNA barcoding. With this method, the morphological features of Collembola commonly used for species identification are well preserved. This DNA extraction method is preferable for DNA barcoding where the sequencing and preservation of a large number of small and fragile specimens are required.

AimsClimate change can substantially alter ecological communities. However, we hypothesized that, even if novel communities emerge, those communities may not be novel in terms of functional composition. To infer the processes associated with rising temperatures, we evaluated elevational taxonomic/functional turnover of plant and invertebrate communities. Because climate change interacts synergistically with other environmental factors, and therefore is not the sole driver of change in ecological communities, we also considered how the taxonomic/functional composition of the communities would be affected by mammalian overgrazing/browsing, which has become prominent in the study region.
