Energy optimization in Membrane Bioreactors (MBRs) is essential to facilitate the widespread adoption of this technology for wastewater treatment. This research examined various operating conditions and commonly employed fouling mitigation techniques to assess their impact on the lifespan of porous alumina microfiltration membranes and energy consumption over the operation cycles in MBRs with backwashing. Parameters studied include frequency of backwashing t<sub>cycle</sub> (30 to 120 min), backwashing duration t<sub>backwashing</sub> (1 to 10 min), backwash flow rate Q<sub>backwashing</sub> (1 to 5 mL/min), filtration flow rate Q<sub>filtration</sub> (1 to 3 mL/min), air circulation flow rate Q<sub>air, module</sub> (0 to 300 mL/min), and MLSS (2000 to 8000 mg/l). Filtration resistance, measured over the operation time, exhibited a typical two–stage behavior. Membrane fouling rates varied under different conditions. Operations showing lesser fouling rates were not always found to be the most energy efficient. Energy consumption during the filtration period E<sub>filtration</sub> is the major contributor to the total energy consumption E<sub>total</sub>.

<p>To realize a hydrogen society, methods to produce hydrogen in an environmentally friendly manner like hydrogen fermentation using biomass waste are required. In this study, we developed a new approach for producing bio-hydrogen at a lower CO<sub>2</sub> emission using two types of bacteria. To improve hydrogen yield and NaOH consumption, which causes CO<sub>2</sub> emission according to a life cycle assessment of process, a co-culture system of <i>Clostridium perfringens</i> HN001, which produces lactate as a by-product of hydrogen, and <i>Megasphaera elsdenii</i> JCM1772, which produces hydrogen from lactate, was designed based on lactate metabolism. In a pure culture of <i>M. elsdenii</i>, lactate was preferentially consumed over glucose, and the production of hydrogen from lactate was confirmed. In a pure culture of <i>C. perfringens</i>, the production of lactate as a by-product of hydrogen was observed. In the co-culture system of <i>C. perfringens</i> and <i>M. elsdenii</i>, an increase of 131% in hydrogen yield and a reduction of 58% in NaOH consumption were achieved compared to those in the pure culture of <i>C. perfringens</i> due to the conversion of lactate to hydrogen by <i>M. elsdenii</i>. This result demonstrates that the co-culture system contributes improvement of hydrogen yield and reduction of CO<sub>2</sub> emission from fermentation process.</p>

<p>The performance of cake filtration depends on the pressure drop due to the permeation of liquid through cake layer. The size of gaps between particles in cake layer dominates the pressure drop. In this study a novel characterization method for the size of gaps based on the thickness of electric double layer around particles was developed and the results were compared with conventional methods based on hydraulic diameter <i>D</i><sub>h</sub> and capillary diameter <i>D</i><sub>p</sub>. The effects of size and morphology of particles were studied with PMMA latex particles, JIS powder (KANTO loam, sodium bicarbonate), PbSO<sub>4</sub>, Zn(OH)<sub>2</sub>. The specific cake resistance, α<sub>AV</sub>, decreased with the decrease in the average particle size. <i>D</i><sub>h</sub> and <i>D</i><sub>p </sub>were decreased with the decrease in <i>D</i><sub>50</sub>. These results showed the smaller particles will make smaller gaps in cake layer. The <i>D</i><sub>sp</sub> could be determined by the analysis of the dependence of streaming potential of cake layer on electric conductivity. <i>D</i><sub>sp</sub> showed almost same trends for particles as <i>D</i><sub>h</sub> and <i>D</i><sub>p </sub>while the absolute value of <i>D</i><sub>sp</sub> showed 1/6~1/10 smaller than <i>D</i><sub>h</sub> and <i>D</i><sub>p</sub>. This result shows the <i>D</i><sub>sp</sub> is useful for the characterization of the size of gaps in cake layer.</p>
