We propose a new design guideline for static fracture resistance of mechanically discontinuous ceramics. In this study, discontinuity ceramics using pottery materials were fabricated by intentionally introducing defects. Dense and porous layer laminates with very high interface consistency were used as a sample. The 3-point bending strength of the laminates was 40 % higher than that of the dense monolayer. This is thought to be that the excessive fracture energy was required to flatten the pores in the porous layer when a 3-point bending load was applied. Furthermore, the 3-point bending strength of laminates in which elastic modulus discontinuities were intentionally established by dividing the uniaxial pressing of dense pottery materials into several times was found to be 25 % higher than that of dense monolayer. Thus, in heterogeneous ceramics, high-strength materials could be created by intentionally introducing the gap in elastic modulus.

<p>The guideline as kinetic equation of decarburizing to prevent excess decrease in fatigue strength, which is expressed as temperature the quenching starts, has been proposed from the systematic investigation on decarburizing spring steels;</p><p><i>T</i><sub>Q</sub> = 910 + 44.7<sup>%</sup>Si - 30<sup>%</sup>Mn - 11<sup>%</sup>Cr - 15.2<sup>%</sup>Ni + 31.5<sup>%</sup>Mo - 203√<sup>%</sup>C - (<sup>%</sup>C - <i>C<sub>S</sub></i>) {1 - exp (-(3.29 × 10<sup>8</sup><i>t</i>) / 2<i>d</i> exp (-(3.61 × 10<sup>4</sup>) / (<i>T</i><sub>h</sub>' + 273)))}</p><p>where <sup>%</sup>M[mass%] indicates content of element M in steel, <i>d</i>[m] initial particle size of austenite. Referring the guideline, quenching from above the evaluated temperature, <i>T</i><sub>Q</sub> can prevent excess decrease in fatigue strength the spring steel exposed to high temperature decarburizing atmosphere, whose temperature is <i>T</i><sub>h</sub>'[°C] and decarburizing time is <i>t</i>[s], because the quenching leads to form the quench microstructure without surface ferrite layer. In the case that the exposed atmosphere is excess CO<sub>2</sub> content, as same as the atmosphere of gas combustion furnace, the value of surface carbon content, <i>C</i><sub>S</sub>[mass%] can be employed to be 0.2. Moreover, if the cooling rate is grater than 80 °C/s corresponding to the cooling rate of oil quenching, the guideline can be used to every spring steels. Similarly if temperature rise is slow, the guideline can be acceptable with modification of the term of decarburizing time to <i>t</i> + 0.03<i>t</i><sub>r</sub>, where <i>t</i><sub>r</sub>[s] is the time period of temperature rise.</p>

The heating properties were investigated for Al<sub>4</sub>SiC<sub>4</sub> powders with various particle sizes (3.0 μm to 1-2 mm) to develop 2.45GHz microwave well absorber. The single-mode cavity, which is able to separate electric field heating and magnetic field heating, was employed as microwave heating systems and the heating behavior was investigated at separated electrical field employing a radiation thermometer. Their electrical permittivity for 2.45GHz were measured by the cavity perturbation method. Al<sub>4</sub>SiC<sub>4</sub> were compared with Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> in both heating behavior and electrical permittivity. The microwave absorption of Al<sub>4</sub>SiC<sub>4</sub> powders increases with their grain size, 1-2 mm particles powders indicates higher temperature than 3 μm in their microwave heating.

<p>A novel numerical simulation method based on finite element analysis (FEA), which can evaluate the fracture probability caused by the characteristics of flaw distribution, is considered an effective tool to facilitate and increase the use of ceramics in components and members. In this study, we propose an FEA methodology to predict the scatter of ceramic strength. And the influence of effective volume can be expressed by proposed FEA methodology. First, we obtained microscopic tissue information from ceramics images and transformed them into fracture mechanics models, we numerically create a Weibull distribution based on multiple FEA results of a three-point bending test. Its validity is confirmed by a quantitative comparison with the actual test results. Next, by analyzing with different test specimens and test method and creating a Weibull distribution, it was shown that as the effective volume becomes larger, the strength decreases and the variation becomes smaller. In this way, the relationship between breaking strength and effective volume could be evaluated.</p>

<p>Based on the high performance of newly developed magnetostrictive FeCo71at% alloy (2011), we have developed two types of smart stress sensor devices, i.e. 1) stress/strain sensor for the machinery and infrastructure by measuring Barkhausen noise using FeCo fine wire, and 2) torque-sensor by measuring the leakage magnetic flux from the edge of magnetostrictive FeCo ring attached on the rotational shaft. The developed torque-sensor unit was applied to electric motor assisted system of spin-bike. These sensor application technologies will be enhanced by combining IoT wireless sensor net-work for Industry 4.0 or Society 5.0 in the near future.</p>
