The purpose of this study is to identify the goals, directions, challenges, and expectations of walkable urban development in Japan. 12 goals were established by organizing the measures, indicators, and concepts related to walkable urban development. A survey conducted in 'Walkable Promotion Cities' revealed a national focus on the vitality, mobility, and comfort of urban spaces. Small regional cities prioritize walking environment improvements, whereas large cities aim for liveliness and interaction. Cities with aging populations show high interest in healthy urban development but low universal design awareness, suggesting a need for aligning appropriate goals with methods. The study also notes challenges in stakeholder collaboration and resource shortages, emphasizing the need for financial and institutional support.

This study aims to clarify the formation and fostering process of Street ManagementLed Group(SMLG) which is necessary for the street space occupation and management, and to figure out the effective network method among several related groups. Based on the four case studies, formed and fostered new SMLGs, five roles of SMLG were classified; 1)Decision-Making, 2)Operation, 3)Maintenance,4)Utilization, 5)Support. As a result of analyzing the fostering process, six points are clarified to progress the street management; 1)Ingenuity for forming and fostering the SMLG, 2)Measured process and support leading to the consensus-building, 3)Building up the platform for the smooth decision-making, 4)Local vision shared-process among the SMLG after Initial movement period, 5)Making the extended group via the utilization and support activities during developing period, 6)Flexibility and Mobility for managing and operating the actual working system.

In recent years, the redevelopment and utilization of parks and roads have been actively promoted. Beyond individual projects, it is essential to view the city as a whole and integrate multiple public spaces. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to clarify methods and strategies for planning and implementing interconnected public spaces within a specific area, drawing insights from an advanced case study, QURUWA strategy from Okazaki City.As a result, the mayor, intermediary support organizations, experts, and citizens each fulfilled their roles at appropriate times, introducing fresh ideas into urban development, establishing a clear and understandable vision, and implementing public investments that served as a catalyst for private-sector projects. The utilization of suitable mechanisms and the establishment of effective systems to realize these ideas enabled the integration of the area's public spaces through both hard (infrastructure) and soft (management and utilization) measures, fostering a sense of collaboration among stakeholders. These elements proved to be key in the strategy for linking the public spaces in this region.

This study aims to clarify the actual situation of reconstruction in disaster-hazard areas in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Targeting Minamisanriku Town and Ofunato City, we organized and analyzed the problems and responses that occurred in the reconstruction of the area by interview and literature survey. 
As a result, we found that problems mainly related with the occurrence of relocation requests, the occurrence of on-site reconstruction, and the occurrence of unused land. In response to these, they responded by devising the contents of the designation of disaster hazard area and its own subsidy projects. Regarding the occurrence of unused land, efforts such as the introduction of reconstruction projects were used to control the occurrence and promote reconstruction.

Sasuke area in Kamakura City has a variety of non-residential buildings, even though this area is designated as a First- Class Low-Rise Residential Zone. These buildings often reflect the identity of their owners and the community, with a recent trend showing a rise in both their numbers and types of use. Despite the absence of district plans or regulations, Sasuke area hasn't experienced notable neighborhood troubles. This is likely due to owners managing their properties and operations as residents. In a First-Class Low-Rise Residential Zone, the building regulations typically require mixed-use residences for non-residential purposes, making the relationship between operators and the community crucial. This dynamic may contribute to balancing the charm of a quiet residential area with the diversity of uses.

In this study, we clarified the actual condition of the road landscape as data was obtained on the old Kamakura Kaido, an ancient medieval road remaining in the urban areas of Izumi and Kanazawa wards of Yokohama City.We focused on the status of the road's survival, the current status of land use and topographical changes along the road, and historical resources in the road's vicinity. By clarifying these through surveys, the characteristics of the landscape along the old road and its modification status were analyzed and discussed.

To promote the establishment of civic green spaces, it is important to establish effective management methods, such as maintenance and management by residents. However, it has become clear that there are challenges in securing manpower. This study was conducted to clarify effective measures for expanding management by residents focusing on Nerima Ward, where measures were implemented to increase the number of people responsible for the management, by interviewing local governments and maintenance organizations. it was found that, because of the municipality's broad-based recruitment efforts, new groups, mainly of the younger generation, began to participate with a variety of objectives. In addition, as the number of groups increased, the local government implemented support in an ingenious way despite manpower constraints.

Areas with large concentrations of small-scale manufacturing industries have experienced significant decline in recent years. This study analyzed the development and utilization of makerspaces (MS), which are expected to serve as places for industrial and regional revitalization, in 54 Japanese cities. MS are classified into three types based on the characteristics of their use: enterprise support type, information dissemination type, and complex type. From the analysis of MS case studies, it was found that activities unique to each area are conducted in MSs by utilizing manufactured goods, manufacturing technology, and the know-how of citizens from new perspectives. It was also found that "mediation of connections by facility operators," "space sharing with functions other than manufacturing," and "expansion of manufacturing activities" form the basis for MS operation.

Recently, population aging and the weakening of local communities in the suburbs is problems, and there is a demand for the establishment of community bases where local residents can participate in community activities. This study focuses on Musashishinjo area to clarify the process and factors behind the establishment of multiple community bases. Through interviews with the places and related groups, following conclusions were obtained. Their establishment involved collaboration from five key entities: land/building owners who envisioned creating communal spaces, operators seeking community engagement, architect adapting spaces for public use, proactive users driving activities, and supporters providing project management and funding. This cooperative effort led to the opening of multiple community bases, fostering regional community development.

The purpose of this study is to obtain suggestions regarding the development method of residential education classes in areas with local resources, and to show the educational effectiveness of the classes using local resources. As a result, we obtained five suggestions for the establishment, continuation, and dissemination of them, including the need for a clear class concept and a facilitator with a clear meaning of implementation. Moreover, the degree of achievement of the subject objectives and that of development of citizenship was good, and we concluded a derivation from “housing education” to “community development education” can be expected.

To cope with Japan is declining population, a plan based on “Compact plus Networks” and the area base formation is progress. And rich area base is able to be formed by concentrating urban facilities and population, diverse human exchange. To make it happen, the small town should plan to overlap a plurality of regional resources. Izunagaoka area that has them like Japanese inn town and a flagship hospital, gathering event has potential of overlapping a plurality of them. In terms of concentrating urban facilities and population, each concentrating area doesn’t necessarily match in the area. But in terms of diverse human exchange, because residents and employees of traditional Japanese inn and a flagship hospital have same needs of urban facilities and hopes for gathering event, they are interested in making use of traditional Japanese inn, there’s a possibility that exchange between residents and employees of them happens. As a result, in the small town, there’s a possibility that diverse human exchange and the rich area base are formed by overlapping a plurality of regional resources.

Currently, “walkable town development” has been explored in many parts of Japan, but concept of “walkable” is so broad that a clear direction has yet to be found. In this paper, I would focus on pedestrian space development projects completed in Urban waterfront area of Yokohama, which has been conscious of pedestrians from early on. Based on pedestrian space concept from viewpoint of design concept, this study aims to identify similar trends in the concept that were emphasized at the time of development. A study was conducted through literature surveys with pedestrian space development projects. Based on these findings, it points out that pedestrian space concept emphasized at different times have changed throughout fifty year period.

There is growing momentum for locally led maintenance and utilization of streets. There are advanced cases in the U.S. that support local organizations and promote utilization in accordance with government policies. In this study, we organize the advanced cases in terms of the local participation process and clarify the feasibility of introducing a street management program in which local organizations participate proactively. As a result, the advanced cases had five local-oriented processes: application process, local consensus building, exchange of opinions with citizens, participation in design, and maintenance and operation. And the possibility of introducing the program in the Kannai area included the possibility of incorporating the review process into the application. On the other hand, the challenges were: difficulty in building consensus with other applicants, street management units, and roadside stakeholders during the screening process; support for building an operational structure; and a non-negative check by the government on the operation.

The research aims to clarify the roles and actual situation of the streets in an urban central district by identifying (1) the functions of main street as public realm, (2)the activities of users and (3)their opinions and preferences on the current condition of the street. The target site is Nihon-Odori street in Yokohama City, which is one of the most representative streets constructed in the Japanese modernization era and integrated into the part of 'Green Axis' in 70's urban design project. The paper interviewed a designer of the renovation in the 2000s, the user observation survey and questionnaire. As results, it indicates the function of the Nihon-Odori was updated for pedestrian activities due to several transformations. It also suggests that the users prefer not only vibrancy by event programs but also the comfortability by the well-managed landscape and greenery. The paper concludes that such comfortability is the crucial key of Japanese street design and management, and future renovations should enhance it by inclusive detail design.
