<p>Precise second-harmonic generation spectra of monolayer (ML)-MoS<sub>2</sub>, trilayer (3L)-MoS<sub>2</sub> with a 3<i>R</i> structure, and 3L-MoS<sub>2</sub> with a 2<i>H</i> structure are measured in the two-photon energy region from 2.4 to 3.2 eV. The spectra are resolved into two components, C1 and C2. As the number of layers increases from ML- to 3L-MoS<sub>2</sub>, the peak energy of the low-energy component, C1, is red-shifted and its peak width broadens. Peak intensity is also higher for 3L-MoS<sub>2</sub> compared with ML-MoS<sub>2</sub>. This trend reveals that the C1 component originates from interband transitions in a ring-shaped region with bands nesting around the Γ point, similar to the C exciton observed in linear optical spectra. In contrast, for the high-energy C2 component, the variation of peak energy and peak width with layer numbers from ML- to 3L-MoS<sub>2</sub> is negligible. Compared with ML-MoS<sub>2</sub>, the peak intensity increases for the 3L-MoS<sub>2</sub> with the 3<i>R</i> structure, but decreases for the 3L-MoS<sub>2</sub> with the 2<i>H</i> structure. These behaviors indicate that the C2 component is different from the C excitons in the linear optical spectrum, coming from excitation in a region where the band structure is less modified by interlayer coupling, revealing the presence of a transition to a hidden state, which is specific to the nonlinear optical spectrum. </p>

<p>We have developed a novel nonevaporable getter named oxygen-free Pd/Ti. After activation at 133℃, oxygen-free Pd/Ti evacuates H<sub>2</sub> and CO. Its pumping speeds do not decrease even after repeated cycles of activation and exposure to the air. Surface analysis by synchrotron radiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the carbon contamination decreased to an extent on heating in UHV, but decreased considerably on heating under an O<sub>2</sub> pressure. The partial pressures of H<sub>2</sub>, CO, H<sub>2</sub>O, and CH<sub>4</sub> in an oxygen-free-Pd/Ti coated chamber reduced to some degree after baking in UHV, but reduced remarkably after baking under an O<sub>2</sub> pressure (O<sub>2</sub> baking). Catalytic chemical reactions which remove carbon and hydrogen adsorbed on Pd surfaces appear to be responsible for the reduction of the partial pressures of H<sub>2</sub>, CO, H<sub>2</sub>O, and CH<sub>4</sub>. The pumping speeds of the oxygen-free Pd/Ti coated chamber for H<sub>2</sub> and CO improved remarkably after O<sub>2</sub> baking.</p>

Surface second-harmonic generation (SHG) is shown to be observable for carbon nanotube (CNT) films grown by CVD on fused silica. The SHG intensity ratio for incident radiation polarized perpendicular and parallel to the plane of incidence at the fundamental radiation (1064 nm) is observed to have typical values for the two kinds of grown film: a film with aligned CNTs and a film with randomly oriented CNTs lying on a substrate sheet. SHG is discussed to originate not from the CNT bulk but from the film surface. The polarization ratio obtained for the two kinds of film was consistent with that calculated for a composite film of spheroidal particles with varying diameters employed to approximate the actual CNT films. The present findings may be applied to in situ evaluation of the initial stage in the CVD growth process of CNTs.
