    ハード・ディスク・ドライブ(HDD)の記録媒体には硬磁性と軟磁性材料を組み合わせた多層構造の薄膜が,ヘッドには軟磁性薄膜が用いられている.更なる大容量化を図るために,記録ビット分離型パターンド媒体技術および高感度磁気ヘッド技術が検討されており,サブ・ナノメートル・オーダーで構造制御がなされたエピタキシャル磁性薄膜の形成技術開発が必要となる.本研究では,単結晶基板上に軟磁性および硬磁性材料のエピタキシャル膜を形成する技術の開発を行い,構造と物性の解析を行った.具体的には,安定構造を持つ3d強磁性遷移金属(Fe,Co,Ni)とその合金膜,バルク状態では存在しない準安定構造を持つ3d強磁性遷移金属とその合金膜,高い一軸異方性エネルギーを持つCo/Pd多層膜,L10型規則合金(FeAu,FePd)膜,希土類遷移金属合金(SmCo5,SmFe5,SmNi5,SmCoFe4,SmCoNi4)膜の検討を行った.本研究で開発したエピタキシャル磁性薄膜形成技術は薄膜構造をサブ・ナノメートル・オーダーで制御できることを示すものであり,次世代磁気記録媒体や磁気ヘッドに適応できる可能性がある.また,単結晶基板を用いて一連の磁性材料のエピタキシャル膜形成機構を系統的に調べる研究は報告例が少なく,磁性膜成長の基本メカニズム解明のための知見に繋がっていくものと考えられる.
