    映像を中心とするマルチメディア関連の急激な情報量増加を背景に,高速・大容量のハード・ディスク・ドライブ(HDD)が求められている.HDDは高速で回転する円板状の磁気記録媒体と情報を読み書きするための磁気ヘッドから構成され,記録媒体にはサブ・ナノメートル・オーダーで構造制御がなされた磁性薄膜が用いられている.記録密度の向上のためには記録磁区サイズを小さくする必要がある.しかしながら,磁区サイズを減少させると,KuV(Ku: 一軸異方性エネルギー,V: 磁区の体積)で表される磁気エネルギーが減少し,磁化が熱的に不安定になってしまう.磁区が熱エネルギーkBT(kB: ボルツマン定数,T: 温度)に打ち勝って安定に磁化方向を保つためには磁気エネルギーが熱エネルギーの60倍程度必要であると見積もられている.そのため,更なる高密度化のためには,記録層材料として高いKuを持つ磁性材料を用いる必要がある.本研究では,高Kuを持つCo,FeAu合金,SmCo5合金のエピタキシャル膜を単結晶基板上に形成する技術の開発を行い,その構造と物性の解析を行った.

    ガラス基板上にAl,Cu,Ag,Au,Feの単層および二層薄膜を形成し,表面起伏と電気,磁気特性との関係を調べた.ガラス基板上における金属薄膜の成長様式は島状成長となり,形成初期過程では不連続膜となった.その結果,電気抵抗率はバルク値に比べて非常に高くなった.膜厚の増加に伴い,膜が連続になり,電気抵抗率もバルク値に収束する傾向が認められた.収束するまでに必要な膜厚は金属材料の種類によって変化し,表面拡散が少ないことが期待される高融点材料を用いることにより,薄い膜でもバルク値に収束させることができることが分かった.低融点と高融点の金属材料を積層させ,低融点材料の濡れ性向上させ,電気抵抗率を低減させる試みも行った.また,不連続膜構造は,磁性材料の磁化値を減少させることも示した.(担当部分) 薄膜試料作製全般,形態観察一部,電気特性測定一部,磁気特性測定全般
