<p> In order to properly evaluate the fatigue strength of hull structures, it is necessary to consider the effects of whipping on fatigue crack propagation in more detail. However, so far, the relationship between the frequency of whipping and sea conditions has not been well studied, making it difficult to predict the frequency of whipping under different sea conditions and to evaluate its effects. In particular, it is difficult to reproduce whipping wave equivalent to those that actually occur from the probabilistic models reported to date on the occurrence of whipping. Therefore, it is difficult to investigate the effects of variable wave with whipping on fatigue using fatigue tests or fatigue crack propagation analysis.</p><p> In this study, longitudinal bending stresses in the center of the hull of an 8600 TEU container ship were measured in headwaters, and the waveforms that could be considered as whipping were extracted. The probability of whipping occurring and the magnitude of whipping were defined, and a statistical model was constructed to determine the probability of whipping occurrence and its magnitude based on the sea conditions using the MCMC method. This enables the generation of wave including whipping under arbitrary sea conditions at the time of sailing in head-waves, and enables fatigue tests and various studies to be conducted using the wave that more closely resembles actual phenomena.</p>

<p> The main purpose of this paper is to develop a new intrusive method to replace the traditional non-intrusive methods, such as Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS). By using the proposed method, the estimation of the stochastic response surface does not require time consuming multiple simulations, but the uncertainties in wave parameter can be estimated by optimizing the stochastic objective function only once. This study discusses the uncertainty in wave parameters estimated by using the present method when both the transfer function and the measurement data contain uncertainties. The validity of the present method is discussed by comparing its results to the results of uncertainty analyses through the MCS in which solutions of the deterministic problems are collected.</p>

<p> The Kuroshio current flowing near the coastal areas of Japan is one of the strongest ocean currents in the world. In addition, it is expected to be a stable power source of renewable energy from the ocean. Recently various ideas are studied to utilize the Kuroshio current for power generation by researchers worldwide. But there has hardly ever been report on demonstration tests in actual sea areas and stress measurement of the demonstration machine.</p><p> We are developing a floating-type ocean current turbine system to utilize the Kuroshio current for power generation supported by NEDO. In this paper, we report the result of demonstration tests in the actual sea area. Especially the power curve was obtained from the measurement in the demonstration test and we confirmed that the estimated capacity factor using the power curve fulfills our initial expectation.</p><p> As a result of the stress measurement, good agreement was observed in general between the measured stresses and the FEM results. However, it was confirmed that with the turbine rotating, the hull may vibrate significantly with the frequencies corresponding to the multiples of the turbine rotation. This is considered to be a resonance of the hull at those frequencies, and although the absolute amplitude of the vibration is small and does not pose a problem for this demonstration test machine, it may become a design issue for future large-scale commercial machines.</p>

<p>To ensure structural safety of large container ships, advanced application of monitoring data is pursued in the structural health monitoring project. In this study, we estimated statistical sea state that the ship actually encountered using Bayesian updating of the sea state data estimated from the measured hull stresses. To achieve reliable real-time short-term statistical estimation of the sea state, we introduced forgetting rate to the past data in the Bayesian model. In addition, abrupt change of the sea state due to the ship operation was detected by Bayesian analysis of the data to obtain probable time history of the sea state by Bayesian update. As a result, good tracking performance of the real time sea state was demonstrated.</p>

<p>The recent increase in the size of container ships has resulted in lower natural frequency of the hull girder vertical bending and torsional vibrations; this has caused great concern regarding excessive whipping in these responses to incident waves. To accurately account for whipping in ship design, it is important to understand the relationship between the whipping response and sea states in which the ship operates. However, this specific topic has been reported little to date. In this study, we quantitatively analyze the influence of various sea states and navigational conditions on the whipping response in hull girder bending vibration and torsional vibration based on full-scale measurement. Moreover, a simple estimation method is proposed for fatigue damage using the relationship between whipping and sea states/navigational conditions. By providing quantitative analysis of the relationship between whipping and sea states/navigational conditions, our study will contribute to future ship design to ensure better operation safety and longer hull life.</p>
