<p>In the event of an unprecedented catastrophe such as a Nankai trough earthquake, there is a risk that various related equipment and facilities would severely degrade. Therefore, it is extremely important to build a soundness assessment system that enables the early restoration of functions of oil storage tank. In this study, repeated stress tests for vinyl ester resin-based glass flake coatings which are typically applied to bottom plates of tanks were conducted in order to estimate the degree of damage to the coating during an earthquake. In the case of testing the coating at average film thickness of 400 μm, physical damages such as cracking or delamination occurred as the strain on the coating surface reached about 1.38%. Furthermore, it is found that physical damage was also caused by repeated strain below this limit, and the tendency showed an S-N curve similar to that seen in metal fatigue fracture. In addition, field survey on corrosivity of sedimented waters on inner bottom plate of actual oil-storage tanks and long-term immersion tests for damaged coating samples were conducted. As results, the corrosivity is almost same that in marine environments and severe corrosion of steel under physical damage of coating were not detected. Based on these results, a flowchart for determining the next overhaul inspection time considering the aging of the performances of anti-corrosive coatings was proposed. The analysis following this chart enable us to estimate the soundness of the coating immediately after an earthquake without removing oil for overhaul inspection and can provide a rational criterion for emergency response.</p>

The water distribution pipelines managed by the Bureau of Waterworks of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government
are approximately 27,000 kilometers long, and upgrading all of the pipelines to earthquake-resistant joint pipes is
expected to take many years and require great expense. Therefore, it is necessary to implement the renewal of
pipelines in an effective and systematic manner from a medium-to long-term perspective. On the other hand, the
legal durable years of water pipelines is 40 years, but the results of past surveys have confirmed that there had
been many pipelines with durability of more than 40 years. In this study, we focused on the fact that the main cause
of deterioration is pitting corrosion, and attempted to analyze the prediction of deterioration of ductile iron pipes
based on the results of investigations of the pipe bodies and surrounding soil. The results of this analysis indicate
that ductile iron pipes have service life of 50 to 90 years, which exceed the legal service life. -

<p>The authors are proceeding with a series of studies on corrosion countermeasures for building equipment in water piping systems. In the previous paper (Part1), the authors showed that treatment of tap water with anion exchange resin reduced corrosivity drastically. In practice, carbon steel did not corrode for 720h in the treated water. This paper (Part2) aimed to elucidate the mechanism of this reduction in corrosivity. First, the trajectory of corrosion potential vs. pH over time was discussed on the Pourbaix Diagram. The trajectory indicated that the passive film became tough in the treated water, while it collapsed in untreated water. The corrosion indexes supported this mechanism. Second, the change of water composition before and after the corrosion test was studied. The concentrations of Ca2+ and ionic SiO2, which were thought to be main constituents of the deposits, changed slightly. This indicated that no deposits was formed at the metal surface. From these results, the authors concluded that the key mechanism of corrosion prevention of the treated waters was the sustenance of passive film. </p>

<p>Tap waters contain both the corrosive anions like SO42-,Cl- and corrosion inhibitive ions such as HCO3-. An anion exchange resin can replace SO42- and Cl- with HCO3-. Thus, the treatment of tap waters by the anion exchange resin, which regenerated with NaHCO3, could produce the corrosion preventive water. This paper aimed at verifying the above idea. The results were as follows; 1) Corrosion tests of carbon steel in the tap waters collected in three areas in Japan were made. At the same time, the corrosion was tested in the waters treated with the anion exchange resin. 2) Corrosion in the treated waters did not appear for 720 hrs. 3) Corrosion potential in the treated water moved rapidly to the positive side. The corrosion potential in the untreated water migrated to the negative side. 4) The corrosion prevention mechanism appeared to result from the formation of passive layer on carbon steel. The authors recommend the application of this technique from the initial operating stages of water piping system. Elongation of piping system was highly expected. </p>

<p>This research was focused on the growth of rusted areas on the surface of carbon steel in tap waters, which were collected at 66 locations in Japan.</p><p>Rusted area ratio (θ) was defined as θ=Arust/A, where A was total surface area and Arust was the area covered with corrosion products. The changes of θ and corrosion potential (<i>E</i>corr) with time were investigated.</p><p>The followings (1)-(6) were resulted.</p><p>(1)As immersion time elapsed, θ increased and <i>E</i>corr became less noble.</p><p>(2)The abrupt changes in θ and <i>E</i>corr with time appeared simultaneously. Stagnations of both θ and <i>E</i>corr followed the above. The time of the abrupt change depended on quality of the tap water.</p><p>(3)The relationship between log{θ/(1-θ)} and <i>E</i>corr was similar regardless of water quality.</p><p>This meant that the rusted area could be estimated only by measuring <i>E</i>corr.</p><p>(4)The abrupt change was in θ seen from 0.2 to 0.5 and <i>E</i>corr from -300 to -500 mV vs.SSE, the time at which <i>E</i>corr reached -400 mV was defined as <i>t</i>initial. For larger <i>t</i>initial, the corrosion at small θ rusted longer.</p><p>(5)Both average and maximum localized corrosion rates were closely related to <i>t</i>initial. Insight into those relations surmised the following mechanisms;</p><p>(a)When θ<0.2, the anodes were fixed, inducing localized corrosion.</p><p>(b)When θ>0.5, anodic and cathodic reactions were distributed even on the whole surface, resulting in then uniform corrosion.</p><p>(6)The authors found that the maximum localized corrosion rate, <i>v</i>max(mm y-1) was a function of <i>t</i>initial as <i>v</i>max=0.32×<i>t</i>initial1/3. The unit of <i>t</i>initial in this equation was hour.</p>

<p>A new method to evaluate the corrosivity of tap water to carbon steel has been proposed. Corrosion tests for the tap waters sampled at 49 locations throughout Japan were conducted. Average corrosion rate <i>v</i>w and maximum one <i>v</i>max were measured. Relatively close relationship of <i>v</i>w and <i>v</i>max to concentration of SiO2 and SO42- were found. On the other hand, the corrosion rates showed slight dependence on concentrations of Cl- and HCO3-. These facts are contradictory to the conventional knowledge. Furthermore, the authors surmised that [SO42-]/[SiO2], named SS ratio, was an effective Corrosion Index. SS ratio showed closer relationship to <i>v</i>w and <i>v</i>max than Langelier Index, Ryznar Stability Index and Larson-Skold Index. The authors succeeded in expressing <i>v</i>w and <i>v</i>max as a function of only SS ratio.</p>

<p>To investigating the long-term degradation of a heavy-duty coating, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy along the depth direction of a vinyl ester resin organic coating containing glass flakes was conducted. The organic coating sample was applied to the inner surface of the bottom plate of the oil storage tank, and used for approximately seventeen years. In addition, the degradation evaluation using the electrical equivalent circuit (EEC) model considering depth direction distribution of R//C time-constant (Voigt measurement model) was examined in detail.</p><p>In the FT-IR along the coating depth direction, no clear peak shift and/or disappearance of the spectrum was observed. On the other hand, the baseline of the Raman shift of the coating gradually increased from near the steel substrate interface toward coating surface. These results suggest that the long-term coating degradation appears as a difference in physical change along the depth direction, and supports the result that the impedance characteristics of the coating can be well-analyzed by Voigt measurement model. Furthermore, it is expected that the DC resistance value can be estimated accurately by the EEC analysis using Voigt measurement model.</p>

In this paper, an in situ atmospheric corrosion sensor based on strain measurement is discussed. The theoretical background for measuring the reduction in thickness of low carbon steel is also presented. Based on the theoretical considerations, a test piece and apparatus for an atmospheric corrosion sensor were designed. Furthermore, in a dry-wet cyclic accelerated exposure experiment, the measured strain indicated thinning of the test piece, although the corrosion product generated on the surface of the test piece affected the results. The atmospheric corrosion sensor would be effective for evaluating atmospheric corrosion of many types of infrastructure.

In situ electrochemical monitoring with a three-electrode cell was applied to investigate the anti-corrosion properties of a mechanical zinc-iron alloy plating. Several electron probe microanalyses were also conducted to identify the chemical elements in the plating. The results indicated the formation of a Zn-Fe intermetallic compound, which allowed a mechanism for corrosion prevention to be proposed. In the proposed mechanism, Zn(OH)(2) plays a significant role in the corrosion prevention of steel alloys.
