<p>In toxicity studies, one of the core endpoints is observation of clinical symptoms including vital signs (VSs). Measurement of VSs has already been realized in safety pharmacology in drug development, but not in toxicity studies on chemical substances. We believe that VSs monitoring in easy-to-use approach can achieve both refinement and reduction in toxicity studies. In the past, we have developed a wearable device for rats (WDr) and achieved measurement of VSs (pulse rate, SpO2, respiratory rate, and body temperature) from a conscious and unrestrained rat over time at low cost (JSOT 2022). For further improvement of the accuracy of toxicity assessment, we attempted to reduce the weight of the WDr, build a program to cope with body motion noise, and evaluate the activity. By redesigning the sensor arrangement and circuitry from the conventional WDr, the weight was reduced by 47% while mounting an additional 6-axis sensor. In addition, we developed an analysis program that recognized abnormal changes in pulse waveforms due to body motion and artifacts and excluded them from the analysis. We orally administered chemicals to rats wearing the WDr and confirmed their pharmacological effects and the recovery process. The results showed that changes in VSs induced by these chemicals could be detected more accurately. Furthermore, we succeeded in obtaining the amount of activity of the animals from the acceleration data. In the future, we aim to achieve both further refinement of toxicity evaluation and reduction in the number of test animals and costs.</p>

<p>In toxicological studies, one of the core endpoint is clinical observation including vital signs (VSs). Measurement of VSs has already been realized in safety pharmacology in drug development, but not in toxicity tests on chemical substances. We believe that VSs monitoring in easy-to-use approach can achieve both refinement and reduction in toxicity studies. In present, we have now developed some WDs for rats to monitor quantitative VS from conscious and unrestrained rats over time. In the development of the WDs for rats, it has been an issue that rats are very small compared with human and their body movements cannot be controlled. We attempted to solve these problems by applying flexible device materials and information processing technology, and developed a pulse oximeter (pulse rate, SpO2, and respiration rate), a thermometer (body temperature), and an accelerometer (body movement) for rats. By incorporating wireless communication using a Bluetooth Low Energy module into the devices, we succeeded in performing wireless and real-time measurements at low cost and low electrical power. In addition, we developed a program to remove data noise by body movement using the accelerometer. We orally administered chemicals to rats wearing the WD, and confirmed their pharmacological effects and the recovery process. The results showed that it is possible to measure multi-VS in rats by a simple method using WD. </p>

<p>Aligned with the vision of Internet of Things, it is expected that the number of interconnected devices, equipped with sensing and actuation functionalities, will grow beyond trillions of units by 2025 representing about 1000 devices per person in the world. The need for personalization that inevitably ensues necessitates devising novel manufacturing processes that seamlessly integrate such functionalities into our surrounding objects. To this end, 3D printing is an excellent process, as it is capable of rapid and on-demand production of mechanically sophisticated and personalized objects with efficient use of materials. In this study, we propose fabrication method of smart devices based on a 3D printing and demonstrate an earable device for real-time monitoring of body temperature, and a wearable device for multi-vital monitoring of newborn baby.</p>

<p>This paper reports caterpillar-inspired soft robot based on thermal expansion with stretchable bending and flexible temperature sensor. The movement of soft robot was based on thermal expansion with highly volatile liquid. On account of thermodynamic method, this soft robot must have a bending sensor for the movement and a temperature sensor to monitor the soft robot's state at that moment. The primary objective of this research is to resolve the integration between soft sensor and actuator. The actuator bends due to thermal expansion. The system could control the thermal expansion change from the resistance of the calculated bending sensor.</p>

<p>This report demonstrates an electrically controlled gel actuator by a three-dimensional(3D) helical microspring with liquid metal. Previously, 3D helical wiring with liquid metal was established based on core-shell hydrogel microspring fabricated using a double bevel-tip nozzle[1]. In this study, with combining this 3D liquid metal wiring and rod of a thermo responsive gel, an electrically controlled gel actuator was realized. In general, gel actuators require change of environmental parameter such as temperature in entire chamber and/or needs harsh environment such as strong acid solution. Therefore, it is difficult to control actuations of gel actuators electrically, and individually. In this study, we succeeded in shrinking and bending of the gel actuator by 36 % and 44 ° by electrical control. In addition, actuations of each gel actuator inside same chamber was controlled individually.</p>

<p>Liquid-state electronics utilizing functional liquids confined in soft templates as the sensing and actuating component present the ideal platform for enabling conformal coverage of electronic systems on curved and soft surfaces. However, to date, optoelectronic devices based on functional liquid materials as represented by photodetectors and optical memories still have not been proposed; this advancement is crucial to scaling up current liquid-state devices to a system level. Here, this study proposes optoelectronic devices based on liquid metal and photo-switchable ionic liquid with liquid-liquid heterojunction technology. The sensing and memory schemes we present are generic for different liquid-state devices, enabling different functionality to be added to the liquid-state electronics. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate a light sensor composed of the ionic liquid, and an optical memory using a composite of the ionic liquid and polypropylene glycol. These devices are important advancements towards the realization of liquid-state electronic systems.</p>

<p>In this study, wearable device that can monitor the multi vital signs of Jaundice, SpO2, and heart rate from newborn foreheads was developed. In order to observe details of body conditions of newborns, it is crucial to detect the multi vital signs such as Jaundice, heart rate and oxygen saturation of peripheral artery (SpO2). In addition, considering the handling of the devices, it is should be convenient to detect them from one device on the forehead, which does not need to take off their clothes or move newborns. In this study, we implemented the functionalities of Jaundice, heart rate and SpO2 measurements into the device. The device irradiated newborn's forehead with BLUE, GREEN, RED, and IR (infrared) LED lights, and measure the 3 vital signs by reflected lights. Using the device, clinical experiments were conducted on neonates 1-5 days after birth. The device succeeded in the detection of bilirubin concentration, heart rate, and SpO2.</p>

<p>In this study, a stretchable array of resistive pressure sensors which could ignore the effect of stretch deformation was demonstrated. In terms of stretchable pressure sensors composed of elastic materials, pressure sensors itself are deformed during strain of the devices, which becomes large error of the pressure measurement. Our resistive sensors in a array are based on patterned porous conductive silicone (Ecoflex). The substrate consists of hetero-silicone rubbers of two different elastic silicones. In addition, resistances of column and row electrodes in the matrix of mapping are much lower than the pressure sensors. This substrate and control of electrode resistances can prevent stretch deformation of the device from affecting the sensing of pressure. The error of the pressure sensor in our device during 150 % strain was one sixth less than the one by conventional elastic pressure sensor composed of organic materials. This result suggests possibility to apply stretchable pressure sensor on largely deformed area of body, and soft robots.</p>

There is tremendous interest in reducing losses caused by the metal contacts in silicon photovoltaics, particularly the optical and resistive losses of the front metal grid. One commonly sought-after goal is the creation of high aspect-ratio metal fingers which provide an optically narrow and low resistance pathway to the external circuit. Currently, the most widely used metal contact deposition techniques are limited to widths and aspect-ratios of similar to 40 mu m and similar to 0.5, respectively. In this study, we introduce the use of a micropatterned polydimethylsiloxane encapsulation layer to form narrow (similar to 20 mu m) microchannels, with aspect-ratios up to 8, on the surface of solar cells. We demonstrate that low temperature metal pastes, electroless plating and atomic layer deposition can all be used within the microchannels. Further, we fabricate proof-of-concept structures including simple planar silicon heterojunction and homojunction solar cells. While preliminary in both design and efficiency, these results demonstrate the potential of this approach and its compatibility with current solar cell architectures.
