    The competitive strategy theory was effective to find a position for strategic rent in the situation with mass production and consumption. The platform strategy theory, on the other hand, is applicable to grow its business ecosystem, where manufacturing capability of products can not be sustainable source of competitive advantage. The scopes of respective theories are quite different, and then, both seem to be mutually independent. That is, it seems to be difficult for us to find real cases that support both theories. In this presentation, however, we show two cases that respective blend of the platform and competitive strategies. The blendings are logically sound and have strong inimitability.

    The application area of IoT and big data for manufacturers is not limited to maintenance service. IoT and big data bring us two kind of revolutionary opportunity to transform manufacturing to manufacture service. The one opportunity can be expressed as "the change from demand forecast to demand monitoring." Another opportunity is based on progress of social decomposition of a business organization into a combination of many types of platform businesses. It allows an organization to use specific expertize of respective platforms, as like a product can be composed of superior parts and softwares. <br>The above revolutionary opportunity also requires change at corporate strategy and operations management. We will examine the business process with integration of MRP model and lean system to open the door.

  • Software platform strategy with deep integration of complementary technologies - A case of enterprise integration system

    Business models on a platform have gained importance in business practices and research fields. Theories of the multisided model on a platform suggest that one of crucial factors is indirect networks occurred between several users' groups. However, the effects of indirect networks depend on the platform's characteristics. This study shows there is a situation where indirect networks do not work well even in a multisided model. Moreover, we will argue that a merchant model with deep integration of complementary technologies creates more values to all users' groups than implementing only a multisided model. We use a case approach. As the case, we picked salesforce.com implementing both multisided and merchant models up. Our findings show that platform such as enterprise integration systems should integrate complementary technologies deeply to achieve an effective platform strategy.

    The financial result of a business is produced by its operation and environment. Since a corporate strategy decides the direction of a business and concerns middle and long range planning, the strategy does not restrict the realization of business structure and operation. Therefore, it is generally difficult for a corporate strategy to be evaluated by short-range financial results. This research proposes how gaming and gamification can be used to resolve this situation.

  • On a Methodology for Service Innovation Strategy and its Gamification

    Service innovation is becoming more important issue in recent economies. We developed a methodology for service innovation strategy formulation and used it for more than five years. The methodology is called soft innovation architecture (soft IA, for short). In this presentation, we develop a gamification of soft IA, by showing its prototype on Facebook. Soft IA has been applied for formulation of past innovations of many existing firms. For instance, our analysis revealed key enablers for e-marketplaces in Japan to survive in Japan''s IT revolution-induced boom around 2000, and also applied for the historical development of sea-container-based revolution of world transportation that started in the USA. Now, based on our past research with soft IA, we need to activate analysts'' motivation more and to stir emotion to innovation by mutually evaluate strategy. Since it is impossible to give correct assessment of strategy for future, we adopted synthetic evaluation. That is, we used a voting system of the like system of Facebook. Our prototype is at https://apps.facebook.com/education-ia/, though its language is Japanese yet. We will report how it worked for experienced MBA and undergraduate students. Also, we consider how human gaming can be combined with this gamification, since open platformatization (in the sense of Henry Chesbrough) of usual business can have many business models so that evaluation of the feasibility and obvious difficulties of the models can be possible.

    One way to see a success in service innovation for B2B (business-to-business) e-commerce firm is to expand and deepen the miscellaneous knowledge of business so that the customer-companies can have a big benefit at low cost by using the service of the e-commerce firm. The point is in the integration of the service innovation strategy and business process. Through analysis and strategy formulation of three Japanese B2B e-marketplaces in respective industries, we will clarify what innovation strategies those firms have accomplished and how they have been developing the business processes with the strategies.
