<p>The use of pneumatics has led to the development of a linear actuator that incorporates pressure-resistant metal bellows. This pressure-resistant bellows device is airtight and capable of considerable expansion. Conventional bellows devices are susceptible to bending stresses at the folds because high air pressure tends to crush the curvature of the bellows there. Therefore, their application only uses a 0.1 MPa difference in inner/outer pressure. The pressure-resistance of the bellows device is improved by the installation of viscoelastic rings in its folds, rings which reduce the bending stress caused by the high air pressure at the thin-walled inner folds. As a result, the pressure resistance is increased by 0.7 MPa. This paper uses a theoretical formulation and a finite element analysis approach in reporting the improvement in pressure resistance made by the installation of the viscoelastic rings. Furthermore, the actuator with pressure-resistant, thin-walled metal bellows is used to control the posture and damping force of a vehicle’s active suspension.</p>

<p>IIn recent years, numerous applications of the variable-speed variable-displacement (VS-VP) hydraulic power unit have been investigated. Especially in a valveless drive system, the necessary hydraulic power could be supplied effectively through a flexible motor speed and pump displacement ratio. This paper presents a control strategy to improve the overall efficiency of a valveless transmission system by regulating motor speed and the displacement ratio simultaneously based on the data of combined overall efficiency maps. In this way, the interaction of the servo motor and hydraulic pump – and whether it affects the overall efficiency of the system – are studied. A numerical simulation is implemented for a series of typical working points of three types of hydraulic power units. The results show that the proposed control strategy achieves better efficiency values in almost all simulation points compared with single-variable power units (variable speed unit (VSFP) and variable displacement unit (FS-VP)). In particular, at a low pressure and low flow rate points, the efficiency of the proposed system is improved by up to 6% and 25%, respectively, compared with the VS-FP and FS-VP power units.</p>

<p>A switched reluctance motor (SRM) generates a reluctance torque without the power of a permanent magnet, rendering it a candidate for rare-earth free motors. Compared with a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), SRMs also offer operational advantage in high-temperature environments owing to their robust structure. However, SRMs are generally inferior to PMSMs in terms of torque ripple, noise, and speed control, in particular. Therefore, this study attempts to improve the controllability of SRMs by proposing an SRM driving method in the form of a bidirectional rotation torque and a speed-controllable servomotor. The advantage of this method is evaluated experimentally using a closed-loop hydraulic system (valveless control system), which includes a hydraulic pump driven by an SRM to supply hydraulic power to actuators. The results show that the pump flow rate and hydraulic motor speed are consistent with the sinusoidal commands corresponding to the forward and reverse rotations of the SRM.</p>

<p>Generally, the magnetic field applied to a magnetorheological fluid (MRF) is generated by electromagnets. Electromagnets consume electric power during MRF magnetization, which is an issue. In this study, we examine two kinds of magnetizing mechanism using a permanent magnet, instead of electromagnets, to save electric power and generate a magnetic field on the MRF. One mechanism linearly moves the permanent magnet into the magnetic circuit composed of yokes. The magnetic field intensity on the MRF is then controlled by changing the overlap between the magnet and the yokes. The other mechanism rotates a permanent magnet in the magnetic circuit. The magnetic field intensity on the MRF is then controlled by changing the relative angular position between the magnet and the yokes. These two mechanisms normally generate force or torque on the magnet toward a magnetically stable position concerning the magnet, and the force or torque causes power consumption to hold and move the magnet. We design herein special magnetic circuits and a cancelation mechanism for the force or torque that drastically reduce the power consumption during the MRF magnetization compared with an electromagnet-type magnetizing device.</p>

<p>For agricultural tractor, these two performances have been very important; high efficiency and maneuverability because the operator has increasingly required the fewer fuel consumption and easier and more precise control of the tractor. Generally speaking, hydro-mechanical transmission (HMT) is well known for the high efficiency level and the step-less variable speed. However, HMT is hydraulic powered system then hydraulic noise may more often occur than the pure mechanical transmission.</p><p>Therefore, this paper shows how to predict the sound pressure level with only using the design parameters of HMT and transmission assembly parts. 1-D hydraulic circuit simulation model and 3-D FEM model of HMT have been developed, and the simulated results of the sound pressure level has been calculated. Moreover, the calculated sound pressure level has been validated by the actual measured data and the cause of prediction error has been found. These all results suggest the possibility that the hydraulic noise can be reduced in an optimal way at the design process, without any prototype testing.</p>

<p>Generally, the magnetic field applied to the magnetorheological fluid (MRF) is generated by electromagnets. It has an issue that the electromagnets should consume the electric power during magnetizing MRF. In this research, for the purpose to power saving, we examined two kinds of magnetizing mechanism to control the magnetic field intensity on MRF, using permanent magnets instead of electromagnets. One mechanism moves a permanent magnet linearly into the yoke poles in the magnetic circuits of MRF magnetizing mechanism, and controls the magnetic field intensity on MRF by changing the overlap between the permanent magnet and yoke pole. The other mechanism rotates the permanent magnet with respect to the yoke, and controls the magnetic field intensity on MRF by changing relative angular position between the permanent magnet and yoke. Normally, these two mechanisms generate force or torque towards a magnetically stable position with respect to the permanent magnet, and the force or torque causes power consumption to hold and to move the permanent magnet.</p><p>In this research, we designed the special magnetic circuits for MRF and the cancelation mechanism for the force or torque. Those magnetic circuits drastically reduces the power consumption during magnetizing MRF, compared to an electromagnet type magnetizing device for MRF.</p>

<p>An active air suspension for posture control of a compact vehicle in motor-sports use has been developed. The active air suspension consists of a pressure-resistant thin-wall metal bellows air spring and a variable damping force damper. Both the stiffness of air spring and the damping force generated by the damper are controlled by the air pressure supplied to the suspension system. This paper presents the mechanism of damping force control, and the unique structure of the damper. Furthermore it shows the damper performance with 1-D simulation results and the damping force measurement.</p>
