The term “2.5 D” (the two point five dimensional) roughly means the intersection between the two-dimensional fictional space where our imagination and fantasy work; and the three-dimensional, that is to say the reality where we physically exist. This term gained much academic attention in Japanese popular culture studies since the early 2000s. My own work has been crucial for developing this. In this talk I will discuss 2.5D culture, including cultural works such as the 2.5D stage plays, cosplays, character/voice actor concerts, the “cheer-a-long” screening of movies, VTubers, and so on. I will also explore how fans consume and use these works to build their networks in Japan and beyond.

This workshop offers a roundtable and discussion on the distinctions and commonalities shared by Media Mix theorists and their counterparts in franchising and transmedia production theory. Media mix has a long history in Japan, dating back to the 1970s and rising in popularity through the commercialisation of anime and manga across the 1980s to the present day. In Japan, the theories surrounding media mix have nearly as long a history and are integral parts of how everything from franchising to fandom have been understood (Steinberg, 2012; Azuma, 2001). Outside of Japan - though often with reference to its media worlds - scholars have begun to examine the history and industrial structures underpinning the creation of transmedia franchises (Johnson, 2013; Jenkins, 2006; Santo, 2017). However, these two bodies of theory could productively speak more to one another, making a roundtable discussion between transmedia franchising and media mix scholars a long-overdue and necessary intervention.
This workshop attempts to rectify this lack of discussion by inviting DiGRA attendees to discuss the overlaps and gaps between media mix and transmedia franchising theories and methods. Our roundtable participants will each offer their five-minute take on either Media Mix or Transmedia Franchising Studies and then we will open up for a more general discussion between panellists and attendees. The aim of this discussion is to attempt to build bridges between media mix and franchising theories, without losing the specificity of either approach. -
