Beach nourishments are implemented in many areas for the countermeasure against coastal erosion. Regarding the investigation of beach nourishment, laboratory experiments focusing on the particle size, mixing ratio, and cross-shore location of beach nourishments have been conducted. However, it cannot say that it is sufficient to examine how much the initial compaction degree of nourishment area contributes to the topography changes of the nourished area. Therefore, we conducted laboratory experiments to investigate the effect of the initial compaction of the beach nourishment on the erosion (topographical change) of the nourished area due to waves. The results revealed that the lower degree of compaction of the beach nourishment, the more significant erosion (topographical change) occurred immediately after wave generation, and the difference in erosion rate between the compacted and loose nourished sand was about twice. Moreover, when the wave overtopped the beach nourishment area, the influence of the compaction degree of the nourished area on the erosion volume is smaller than when it does not overtop the nourished area. On the other hand, when the waves did not overtop the beach nourishment area, it was found that even if the topography shape after the experiment was the same, the degree of compaction of the remaining topography was different.

Nine onshore-directed dominant sediment transport events were extracted from the 17-year beach profile data observed at the Hasaki coast in Japan. By using these data, the performance of the sediment transport model XBeach for these events was investigated. First, the spatial distribution of wave height was compared with observed data, and the appropriate wave breaking model and its parameters were selected. After confirming the wave propagation, the model performance of profile changes was investigated. In this analysis, the sensitivity analysis of the wave nonlinearity parameter (fua), which strongly influences cross-shore sediment transport, was conducted. The results revealed that some events could simulate with good accuracy using optimized fua. However, some were not improved even if the fua was changed. Although we tried to estimate the value of fua using some parameters, e.g., wave energy flux, we could not find a good relationship between them. However, we found a positive correlation between sediment volume change in the nearshore zone and fua.

<p> In this study, a barred beach profile was constructed and installed in a small-scale laboratory wave flume. The beach profile was composed of a fixed profile containing a sandpit in the middle part of the flume. Different wave conditions were provided to evaluate the effect of sediment compaction on the vertical pore water pressure and sediment suspension. The pressure gradients were achieved by finite difference of measurements from an array of transducers. The magnitude of pore water pressure, pressure gradient, and sediment concentration with low and high sediment compaction were compared. In general, the magnitude of pressure gradients within the sediment layers with high compaction were larger compared to the low compaction conditions. Similarly, the recorded pore water pressure and sediment concentration were examined, and different behaviors such as the differences in the magnitude of the pore water pressure and pressure gradients due to different sediment compaction levels under almost the same hydrodynamic conditions were observed. The average of peak pressure gradients within the sediment layers under high compaction conditions was 1.4 times larger than the low compaction conditions. These results indicate the necessity of a detailed investigation of sediment's influence on pore water pressure gradient and sediment concentration.</p>

<p> Field experiments were conducted at the Hasaki Oceanographical Research Station (HORS), located on the Hasaki coast in Ibaraki prefecture, to investigate the correlation between sound pressure levels and wave heights. The wave sound levels were observed 114 m landside from the average shoreline position and 11.6 m above the average sea level. The observed hourly data from October 20th to November 17th 2020 were used in the analysis. First, the significant wave height was estimated using the data measured by the sound level meter. It was confirmed that the estimation results show an almost similar trend compared to the previous studies (<i>R2</i> = 0.51). Next, significant wave height values were estimated with an IC recorder. The sound pressure level and relative deviation by the IC recorder and wind speed were used to estimate the wave height. However, the highest correlation coefficient was <i>R2</i> = 0.15. Therefore, relationship formula was derived between the significant wave height and the IC recorder's sound pressure level using the preceding 1.5 days data. Furthermore, the formula was used to estimate the significant wave height for the following 12 hours. As a result, although there was a slight time delay, it was found that the wave heights can be estimated with a good accurately (<i>R2</i> = 0.64).</p>

<p> In this study, we devised a monitoring method for simultaneously estimating elevation, median grain size (D50), and Arcuatula senhousia distribution using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) aerial images of tidal flat fisheries in the Konagai sight frontage of Isahaya City, Nagasaki Prefecture. The elevation of the tidal flat was estimated using Agisoft photoscan, and the D50 was estimated based on the reflectance obtained from the aerial images. In the elevation estimation, the bias was about 0.017m, and the D50 was correlated with the reflectance with R2 =0.615 (N=9). The detection accuracy of the <i>Arcuatula senhousia</i> distribution was found to be more than 70% at an altitude of 5~20m with 12-megapixel camera and decreased to less than 50% at an altitude of 30m or higher, and more than 60% at an altitude of 40m with 50-megapixel camera and decreased to less than 60% at an altitude of 50m. In addition, by examining the relationship between the estimated spatial distribution of each parameter, we were able to identify the area where <i>Arcuatula senhousia</i> tends to occur.</p>

<p> In eutrophic waters such as Mikawa Bay, the bottom water becomes anoxic in summer, and sulfide is leached into the bottom water due to sulfate reduction in the sediment surface layer, leading to environmental problems such as blue tide.As a method to improve the bottom sediment environment, the addition of iron materials to the bottom sediment, inspired by the natural phenomenon of iron curtain (removal of hydrogen sulfide by reaction with iron), has been devised, but its quantitative evaluation has not yet been achieved. In this study, we developed a sediment model focusing on the sulfur circulation process to quantitatively evaluate the inhibitory effect of iron addition on sulfide release, and performed reproducible calculations of sulfide elution experiments. In this study, we developed a sediment model focusing on the sulfur cycling process in order to quantitatively evaluate the effect of iron addition to the sediment.</p>

<p> In this study, laboratory experimental tests were performed in a small two-dimensional wave flume. Specific quantities of mixed sediment, i.e., medium sand (<i>d50</i> = 0.64 mm), coarse sand (<i>d50</i> = 1.59 mm), and fine gravel (<i>d50</i> = 4.05 mm), were placed near the shoreline of the landside, and these sediments were pushed landward due to the inundation flow of the transient wave. The spatial distributions of each sediment were investigated, and those of fine gravel in the mixed sediment were estimated. The spatial distributions of fine sand and coarse sand could be separated using a color clustering method by adopting colored sand for coarse sand. The results revealed that the spatial distributions of medium sand and fine gravel are farther transported compared with each uniform material case. However, the spatial distributions of coarse sand cannot be obtained a clear difference with its uniform case. The spatial distribution of fine gravel in mixed sediment can be estimated by tuning the shape of a uniform material using the ratio of medium sand in the mixed sediment.</p>

<p> A two-dimensional XBeach model faces difficulty in updating the bathymetry profile under calm conditions. This study investigates the inaccuracy of predicting the undertow, which is a seaward-directed current affecting the suspended sediment load. Progress was made in applying XBeach to the prediction of the observed undertow in the field in the Hasaki coast of Japan. The observations were performed between May 9 and June 2, 2016. To assess the capability of XBeach to reproduce the undertow under low-wave-energy conditions, the datasets observed during the calm situation (after May 24, 2016) are used, and the parameters sensitive to the undertow prediction are adjusted. The results reveal a time-shift problem that occurs at the time-varying undertow velocity. The comparison becomes better when the undertow is forward-shifted for 3 h but remains underestimated. To improve the XBeach default results, a modification is implemented based on the Stokes drift, using the coefficient of water depth. This approach improves the accuracy of undertow prediction in XBeach from bad to reasonable quality for the average of RMAE value (from 0.77 to 0.48), against the observation.</p>

<p> The presence of microplastics (MP) in oceans and beaches have become an issue of concern globally. The distribution of MP on coasts should be known to understand the movement of MP. In this study, the spatial and temporal variation of MP at the Fujisawa coast, Japan, was observed in spring and autumn. The results revealed that the presence of MP on the coast was 93 per m2 at the coast. Even on the same coast, the spatial and temporal variation existed, and the movement of MP on the beach may be significantly affected by the wind force. Moreover, more than 90 % of MP in the sand could be removed using a simple removal technique.</p>

<p> Coastal areas are facing more severe storms and flooding worldwide. These storms create significant morphological changes to coastlines. Coastal engineers have made several efforts to assess and predict the strength of coastal storms and morphological changes. Recently, several parameters for predicting storm impact have been proposed. In this study, the Coastal Storm Impulse (COSI) parameter is used to predict volume changes from coastal storms using the data observed in Japan. The wave height and storm duration were used to define and pull out the storms. The volume change from each storm was calculated for two areas, i.e., the entire beach profile and nearshore area (Zone 1). The correlation coefficient, <i>R2</i>, between the COSI parameters and the volume change for the entire profile and Zone 1 were 0.34 and 0.32, respectively. The storm events were classified into two groups based on the surge contribution, i.e., with and without the surge momentum effect for Groups 1 and 2, respectively. From the regression analysis, the correlation coefficient, <i>R2</i>, between Group 2 of the COSI parameters and the volume change of Zone 1 was 0.62. Moreover, the shoreline position was included in the estimation of the volume change in Zone 1, and the predicted result improved by up to <i>R2</i> = 0.71. From the analysis results, although there is a relatively low correlation between the COSI parameter and the volume change at Zone 1, the relationship will increase when we focus on the storms that include surge momentum and consider the shoreline position. Thus, we considered the seasonal shoreline location to improve the prediction results.</p>

<p> Laboratory experiments are conducted in a small 2D wave flume. A 4.7-cm transient wave height is used in the experiments. A certain amount of mixed sediment (0.64, 1.59, 4.05 mm) is placed near the shoreline of the land side, and these sediments are pushed landward due to the inundation flow of the wave. The mixing ratios of the three sediments are changed, and 11 cases are conducted. The analysis focuses on the sediment transport of fine gravel (4.05 mm). From the results, regardless of the mixing ratio, the peak location of the fine gravel is nearly the same for all cases. Moreover, the fine gravel is likely to gather at the peak location, combined with fine sediment, and the shape of the spatial distribution can be expressed using a logistic peak distribution.

In this study, we developed a sulfur estimation model for blue tide distributions using geostationary ocean color imager (GOCI) data. In order to develop the sulfur estimation model, Rrs with blue tides, and light absorption coefficient and backscattering coefficient of sulfur particles were figured out by conducting field observations in Tokyo Bay and laboratory experiments. Based on the measured sulfur optical properties, we developed a bio-optical model which was incorporated sulfur as a variable and then Rrs with fluctuation of sulfur concentrations could be calculated. A sulfur estimation model based on QAA_v6 improved by the results of the calculated Rrs of blue tides was developed. Compared to the estimated sulfur by GOCI data with the measured sulfur, it was possible to estimate sulfur concentrations with high accuracy when the difference between satellite data acquisition time and stating time of sampling in the field was small. Furthermore, it was captured that spatial distributions of sulfur concentration have changed with every 1-hour interval with the change of wind condition.

<p> Undertow is a significant offshore-ward current that is induced by a shoreward water mass flux under wave breaking and Eulerian drift in non-wave-breaking conditions. The undertow generates offshore sediment transport and also affects swimming safety. To increase the understanding of the undertow, field observations were conducted on a barred beach, Hasaki coast, Japan, for 21 days from May 13 to June 2, 2016. A Horizontal Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler was used to measure cross-shore currents, i.e., undertow, and water levels in the surf zone. Observed data was analyzed to investigate the characteristics of the spatial and wave-energetic distributions of the undertow exceedance probability (hereafter as <i>PE</i>). When the wave energy flux level was high, the undertow became larger, and its <i>PE</i> increased. By contrast, the <i>PE</i> during a low wave energy level decreased with larger water depths, and its lowest value was in the trough region. Applying a Weibull distribution to <i>PE</i> curves can develop a statistical model of the undertow, and it can be considered that the Weibull parameters are affected by the combination of normalized values of the wave energy flux, relative surf zone location, and normalized water depth. The two parameters of Weibull distribution was able to estimate using the normalized parameter, and the model well predicted the <i>PE</i>. Furthermore, to demonstrate the effect of tidal ranges on the undertow, the <i>PE</i> distributions for each wave energy level and location were distinguished by the water level, i.e. tidal elevation, as high-tide or low-tide durations. The undertow <i>PE</i> was greater for low-tide data than those for high-tide and the full data at a low wave energy level.</p>

<p>The field observations of cross-shore sediment transport from the swash zone to the offshore side of the outer bar using fluorescent sand tracers were conducted in 2014 and 2015 at the Hasaki coast, Japan facing the Pacific Ocean during storm wave conditions. The topography difference between the two years data set is that outer bar shape existed in 2014 and not existed in 2015. During the observations, wave height and wave period were observed, and sand core samplings were conducted. By using the observed wave data and the analyzed results of collected fluorescent sand tracers from the cores, the sediment movements from the offshore side of the outer bar area to the swash zone during storms were investigated. The results indicate that the sediment movements during the storms were affected by the outer bar shape. If the outer bar existed, the sediment of the onshore side of the outer bar tend to move landward, and it also moves to seaward due to undertow until the outer bar location. The sediment at the offshore side of the outer bar tends to move to onshore ward due to bedload sediment transport. However, the transport rate decrease in the trough region. The beach topography without the bar shape, the bed load sediment transport rate at the trough region was higher than that with the bar shape. Thus, the sediments at the offshore side of the bar also could move until the swash zone.</p>

In this study, we developed a method to estimate spatial salinity distributions based on a relationship between absorption coefficients of color dissolved organic matter (aCDOM) and Salinity, by estimating aCDOM using COMS/GOCI in eutrophicated coastal areas. Using Bio-Optical model, which was developed by in situ optical data collected at an inner part of Tokyo Bay, the aCDOM estimation accuracy was evaluated against changes of Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and non-algal particles (NAP). As a result, an aCDOM estimation model based on a ratio of remote sensing reflectance, <i>R</i>rs(660 nm)/<i>R</i>rs(490 nm) was effective when Chl-a is low concentration. Moreover, an aCDOM estimation model based on <i>R</i>rs(550 nm)/<i>R</i>rs(660 nm) could estimate aCDOM adequately when Chl-a is high concentration. Therefore, a switching method for the two aCDOM estimation models as using threshold values from Chl-a spatial distributions, which is preliminarily estimated by applying a field observation result assimilation FLH to GOCI images, was suggested. In comparison with in situ salinity and estimated salinity, the relationship was R2=0.71, RMSE=1.04(N=114) and it could be available to estimate salinity with high accuracy more than previous methods.

Cross-shore sediment transport and the sediment mixing of inner-surf and outer-surf zones were investigated using field data observed at a dissipative sandy beach. The field observations were conducted in May 2017 for 12 days. During the observations, since an outer bar did not exist, the sediment on the offshore side of the surf zone moved toward the shoreline. Moreover, the sediment in the surf zone moved to the offshore side of the surf zone because of undertow. The mixing depths were observed from sand cores using fluorescent sand tracers. The results indicate that the mixing depths in the surf zone were approximately 31 cm, and its spatial distribution was estimated using the wave breaking height considering the wave breaking zone. The mixing depth on the offshore side of the surf zone may be correlated with the ripple height.

In this study, laboratory experiments are conducted in a two-dimensional flume with a 1-m-long sandbox in the middle of a slope. Using fluorescent sand tracers and core sample methods, the spatial and temporal variation in the mixing depths in the surf zone are investigated. The core samples are collected from the sand bed where the wave breaking and impinging are observed. The mixing depth is defined as the fluorescent intrusion depth from the bed profile at the time of core sampling with a cut-off value of 10 tracers. In the case of sediment accumulation, the mixing depth is measured from the initial bed profile. Moreover, each case of the experiments is simulated by a numerical model, Large Eddy Simulation (LES), to compare the mixing depths with the velocity field of horizontal bottom eddies. The simulation results of the surface elevations and velocity fields are verified using the measured data. The experiment results indicate that the spatial variation of the mixing depths show different trends depending on the wave breaking style. Moreover, the mixing depth variations are compared with the simulated results of the bottom horizontal eddies. The results indicate that the plunging breaker type of sediment mixing pattern in space within the wave breaking zone correlates with the spatial distribution of the maximum bottom horizontal eddies.

<p>The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between high turbidity and sulfur, and transfer of a blue tide after upwelling. We achieved ship observations of a blue tide at 24th August 2015 on the inner part of Tokyo Bay. There was a definite positive correlation between turbidity and sulfur from analysis of water samples. Therefore, high turbidity indicates the particulate sulfur element in a blue tide. Upwelling water of the blue tide outflowed to the middle layer for analyzing a composition of the blue tide water. It was considered that a density of upwelling water decreased slightly due to mix with around surface water. The blue tide water drifted on a pycnocline for wind driven current and density current.</p>

The field experiments were conducted to investigate the characteristics of sediment movements during a short time duration. The focusing area is from the swash zone to the offshore side of the bar. At the Hasaki coast, Japan, five colored fluorescent sand tracers were installed on the seabed at different cross-shore locations, around every 50 m, from near the shoreline to the offshore side of the bar. During the experiments, seven times of seabed surface sediment samplings were conducted every 10 m of cross-shore distance from 1 hour to 144 hours after the installation of the fluorescent sand tracers. From the analysis, the sediments in the surf zone were spread in the area from near the shoreline to the onshore side of the bar within one hour after the installation. The fluctuation of the centroid of the fluorescent sand distribution was correlated with that of the wave breaking point. The sediment movements at the offshore side of the bar had a correlation with the value of the offshore wave energy flux.

Coastal environmental sound was measured at three locations, the Sagami-nada Coast, Odawara; Oiso; and Fujisawa. The loudness of the sound was correlated with distance from the shoreline at a wind speed of less than 4 m/s. The sharpness of the sound had a negative correlation with wind speed. Moreover, organoleptic examination was conducted to investigate the comfort level of the sound. From the results, we found that the coastal environmental sound consist of two factors, a power factor and a clarity factor. The power factor can be estimated from loudness, and the clarity factor can be estimated from sharpness and the wave breaker index.

The correlation between foreshore beach profile change, especially berm erosion, and groundwater level fluctuation was considered using a numerical model, XBeach (Roelvink et al., 2010). After conducting the model verification with the observed field data, the correlation was analyzed by numerical experiments. From the numerical experiment analysis, when the groundwater level was controlled to an original level at some regular time interval, although the berm erosion occurred as the same as the un-controlled case, the berm erosion volume is reduced.

Field experiments were conducted from July 14, 2009 to Nov. 2, 2009 to investigate correlation between sound pressure levels and wave heights at the Hasaki coast, Ibaraki, Japan. From the results, we proposed an equation for estimating significant wave height using sound pressure level and difference in percentile noise level of coastal environment sound. The results of the proposed equation show a good correspondence to the observed results (<i>R</i> = 0.87). Also, the magnitude of the difference in percentile exceeded noise level of coastal environment sound has negative correlation with the significant wave period.

An Improved Model for Short-Term Beach Profile Change Focusing on Berm Formation and Erosion

A short-term swash zone beach profile change model proposed by Suzuki and Kuriyama (2009) focusing on berm formation and erosion was improved using the distribution curves of cross-shore sediment transport rates for berm formation and erosion determined by the slope of the curves at the inflection points. The improved model was applied to the calculation of three months beach profile change, which results were compared with field data and the computational results of Suzuki and Kuriyama (2009). The present model was found to well predict not only the shoreline change but also the beach profile change, including the berm formation and erosion, compared to the model by Suzuki and Kuriyama (2009).
