Damage to light poles mounted on viaducts under Level 2 earthquake must be avoided because it could create traffic disruption that would impede the post-earthquake emergency function of transportation networks. In this study, the plastic deformability and damage morphology of light poles were investigated and confirmed in the full-scale static loading tests using actual light pole structure. Based on results of the loading tests, the limit state, and the allowable deformation of light poles were determined to ensure its function in the case of emergency on transportation roads. Excessive seismic-induced vibrations are commonly observed on light poles mounted on viaducts due to response amplification of the viaducts. Accordingly, a practical seismic design method is proposed to verify that the seismic-induced displacement does not exceed the limit state 2 using dynamic analysis of the viaduct and the light pole. Furthermore, as a case study, earthquake resistance of the light pole on an existing viaduct was examined.

On the surface of the steel material (base material) undergoing repeated plastic deformation, a group of surface cracks in which multiple cracks are lined up in stripe patterns is often seen. This group of surface cracks is considered to be the source of ultra-low cycle fatigue cracks starting from the surface of steel material and has a great influence on the ultimate behavior of steel members. This paper clarifies the basic formation mechanism of surface cracks that appear in the process of generation of ultra-low cycle fatigue cracks from the viewpoint of bifurcation theory. Specifically, based on the results of repeated loading experiments and elasto-plastic analyses under large-amplitude strain, the generation and development of plastic wrinkles, caused by the surface instability mode, are microscopically related to the spatial periodicity of surface height. And, the spatial periodicity could already occur at the time of initial yielding of steel surface.

Application of different contact faces in one bolted joints might allow labor-saving and accelerated works in some cases such as protection works of existing bridges and fabrication of box girders made of weathering steel without coating.

In present study, bolted joints including different contact faces were targeted as a hybrid faying surfaces joint in which contact surface treatment for the base plates is different from corresponding that for splice plates (inorganic zinc-rich coatings), and 21 bolted joint specimens were used in bolt pretension test and slip test. This paper reports these results and compares degree of pretension loss and slip resistance in the hybrid faying surface joints with homogeneous (i.e. normal) joints. Finally, also based on previous research, the applicability and slip coefficient for designing of the hybrid faying surfaces joints are discussed.

The characteristics of decrease of bolt pretension by relaxation differ depending on the type of contact surfaces. To enhance the safety of bolted joints, it is important to verify that the tension of high strength bolt is retained proper level even after relaxation. By investigating characteristics of decrease of bolt pretension by relaxation referring to past literatures about high strength bolted joints, we showed the characteristics of decrease of bolt tension by difference of contact surface type; painting, rust, rough surface, sprayed surface, and galvanization surface. In addition, this study also dealt with the effect of the initial tension of high strength bolt, the type of joint, the length of bolt, the thickness of paint.

It is known that high strength bolted joints treated with zinc-rich paint have a characteristic of large bolt pretension loss by relaxation. Furthermore, it has been found that this type of joint causes a larger bolt pretension loss when the zinc-rich paint has a thick film thickness or when a filler plate is used. On the other hand, the effect of the mutual relationship between the film thickness and the number of contact surface on the bolt pretension loss is unknown. In this study, relaxation test and slip test of high strength bolted connection specimens were carried out with the film thickness of the zinc-rich paint and the presence of the filler plate as parameters. From these results, we discussed the initial bolt pretensions on high strength bolted joints treated with zinc-rich paint considering number of contact surface.

Analysis on bridge health inspection results and maintenance work cost records were conducted targeting road bridges in Kanagawa prefecture, which may provide a helpful perspective for estimation of future maintenance cost of bridges. The inspection results of 336 bridges were analyzed by type of structural members and implied tendency so that corrosion in steel girders and cracking in concrete girders and slabs progress relatively slowly but some types of concrete member deteriorations are found after escalation. The maintenance work cost record showed that total cost accumulation for repairing work of concrete bridges occurs rarely but drastically at one time. Besides, in steel bridges total cost accumulation for repairing increases slowly but steadily due to paint deterioration or corrosion.

Conducting a buckling experiment with the use of steel may provide high educational benefits in the experimental class of civil engineering course because it enables detailed observation and measurement, covering elasto-plastic buckling and offering extraordinary experience. This paper proposes a flexural buckling experiment with steel which possesses the degree of freedom as much as that of experiments for acrylic board, wood, paper and so on. This experiment also has advantages in cost and adjustability of the contents. This paper also reports the results of application of this experiment at the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology. According to the results of the questionnaire survey, the experiment, especially the usage of steel, was highly evaluated by the students after the class.

Relaxation of high strength bolted joints causes large bolt pretension loss at an initial stage of relaxation. However, the detailed characteristics had not been clarified. In this study, relaxation tests targeting many types of high strength bolted joints were carried out. Then, we investigated characteristics of bolt pretension loss at an initial stage of relaxation by literature search. From these results, we discussed the initial value setting method for relaxation tests in high strength bolted joints.

In high strength bolted joints, dissimilar belted joints with different friction surface specifications may be used on the front and back surfaces (for example, the outer and inner surfaces of a box girder), however the slipping behavior of the joints was not clear. This study is an experimental study aimed at clarifying the slip behavior and slip strength of the joint. In this experiment, high strength bolted joint specimens with thermal spraying on the front and inorganic zinc rich paint on the back were manufactured, and relaxation tests and slipping resistance tests were carried out using them. During the slip strength test, displacement gauges were installed on the front and back surfaces, respectively, and the behavior during slipping was measured to clarify the behavior of dissimilar belted joints. The slip strength of the joint was clarified and the applicability of dissimilar belted joints was also shown.
