Issues in urban nursery facilities from childcare workers' awareness during the COVID-19 pandemic: Analysis of interview findings focused on ventilation behavior

<p><b>【Background】</b></p><p>It is difficult to secure sufficient indoor space and ventilation in nursery facilities located in city centers, raising concerns about infection risks for children and their caregivers. The purpose of this research is to sort out the challenges faced by nursery facilities by focusing on the infection prevention awareness of childcare workers before and after the COVID-19 pandemic and the environmental characteristics of the areas where the facilities were located.</p><p><b>【Methods】</b></p><p>We chose as research subjects five facilities in Yokohama City that showed differences in CO<sub>2</sub> concentrations, temperature, and humidity based on our measurement results and which seemed to have varying levels of awareness of ventilation and infection prevention. We then conducted an interview survey of the directors of the facilities about measures employed to prevent infection with COVID-19, changes in their awareness before and after the pandemic, and other matters, such as difficulties they experienced trying to prevent infections.</p><p><b>【Results】</b></p><p>All nursery facilities were in areas where there was no need to worry about traffic noise or annoying people in the neighborhood with noise from the facility. However, windows were often opened to introduce fresh air in only three facilities. Additionally, there were facilities that could not freely open their windows for ventilation. Nevertheless, in both cases, awareness of the importance of ventilation improved after experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic.</p><p><b>【Conclusion】</b></p><p>The survey subjects responsible for facility management were earnestly seeking information and guidance on indoor air quality control, a finding that highlighted the need for providing information tailored to childcare workers.</p>

<p>In practical architectural design, the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) has become prevailing in recent years, encouraging the wider use of environmental design methods that employ simulation functions. Meanwhile, universities do not provide architectural students with environmental design education that integrates these techniques into the architectural design process, causing a gap between actual practices and university education. In this study, a new program for a BIM-based environmental architectural design class was created and introduced to junior-year students at an architecture-related university to assess the results.</p>

<p><b>【Background】</b>While concerns are growing over the exhaustion (burn-out syndrome) of childcare workers, there has been little research focusing on the relation between worker stress and the physical environment of childcare facilities in which they work. This paper aims to shed light on the relationship between stress and the sound environment surrounding childcare workers.</p><p><b>【Method】</b>Childcare facilities in Yokohama City were researched using two types of questionnaires: one targeted at the facility administrators and the other at the childcare workers. The administrators were asked to answer about the characteristics of the facility and considerations made in relation to the sound environment, while the childcare workers were asked about their awareness to sound, daily stress, and the quality of rest during break time.</p><p><b>【Results】</b>A multiple regression analysis of the responses collected from childcare workers revealed that “sound environment including resonance and noise levels” was ranked as the third important factor, along with “salary” which had a comparable effect on job satisfaction. As a result of a chi-square test conducted on sound environment-related measures taken by the facility and concerns over noise leakage by childcare workers, a significant difference was detected regarding “children’s voice from indoors.”</p><p><b>【Conclusion】</b>These research results suggest the possibility of mitigating stress factors placed on childcare workers through not only the aspects of interpersonal relationships and compensation, but through an approach to improve the physical environment of the facility, such as improving the sound environment and securing a peaceful place for resting.</p>

<p>In order to increase thermal insulation performance of wooden detached house in a temperate region considering various plans and lower cost, new insulation techniques utilizing internal layers including non-residential spaces, partitions and ceilings without increasing the thickness of insulation in exterior wall were proposed. The six types of two-story house models using internal insulation layers with almost the same floor area but different plans were proposed and were clarified each air conditioning load by numerical simulation. It was confirmed that the thermal insulating effect could be enhanced by insulating the internal layers.</p>

It is difficult to evaluate thermal comfort in daily life with the existing thermal environment indices because of the differences in individual thermal sensation, metabolic rate, and so on. This is partly because existing thermal environment indices are based on adult males. In addition, there are challenges in the evaluation of hot environment. Therefore, we conducted a subject experiment for female assuming indoor play with pre-school children in summer and analyzed the relationship between metabolic rate and thermal sensation. The results showed that the physical activity of adult female playing indoors with pre-school children in a high-temperature environment (32℃) was around 1.8-1.9 METs. The influence of metabolic rate was confirmed because there was significant difference in the correlation between SET*(ASHRAE) and SET*(UC) for the thermal sensation during indoor play.

<p>The purpose of this study is to reduce the risk of heat shock by changing floor plan at house renovation for the elderly. By numerical analysis using the actual renovation models and analysis of the layout of sanitary rooms including corridors, the items for changing floor plan to mitigate thermal environment were extracted. As a result of analyzing the renovation models applied those items, it was confirmed that the room temperature of sanitary rooms rise and the reduction of the heat shock risk by the proposed index.</p>

<p>A simplified method for measuring the current thermal transmittance is suggested in this paper. First, temporal changes of the sectional temperatures of the building envelope were simulated by the Finite Difference Method. By using these results, the method for measuring the thermal transmittance in a state that closes to steady state was found. The accuracy was examined by comparing with the true values. Finally, the proposed method was used to measure the thermal transmittance of exterior wall of an existing house to confirm the usefulness of this method.</p>

In this study, CFD analysis was used to examine the effect of environmental adjustment acts on indoor air quality of nursery facility in urban area. As a result, it was confirmed that even with a ventilation volume of 30 m3/h per person, air was stagnant in the 2-year-old area separated by furniture. The use of ceiling fans was confirmed to have sufficient air circulation effect even in low operation. In addition, the window-opening ventilation had a significant effect on reducing the CO2 concentration, and the effect on the entire ventilation path was confirmed after 8 minutes. These results confirm the necessity of taking specific adjustment methods for space with stagnant air as the infection control measures.

In Japan, energy conservation in houses is accelerating to achieve the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In this situation, inner envelope was proposed, that ensures thermal insulation with the spatial configuration of non-residential space and partition walls. However, the thermal environment has not been discussed yet. In this study, actual measurement survey was conducted to clarify the issues of the indoor thermal environment in summer in the house retrofitted with inner envelope. As a result, it was confirmed that the room temperature rises due to solar radiation. Furthermore, to improve thermal environment in summer, the effects of solar shading, cross ventilation, and air conditioning were investigated by simulation. It was found that solar shading is effective in improving the thermal environment of habitable room during the daytime.

Japan ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2014, and Act for Eliminating Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities was enacted in 2016 to promote independence and social participation of persons with disabilities based on the principle of normalization. In order to create a society where everyone can live their lives the way they want to, we should provide a living environment where people with disabilities can safely go out and live their daily lives regardless of the type of disability or symptoms of the disease. In this study, we surveyed patients with neurological diseases, mainly Parkinson's disease, on their opinions and needs toward the current state of walking when they go out, and by structurally organizing their psychological burdens and latent needs for the subject's environment, we identified problems with the current outdoor walking space

In recent years, the number of domestic fatal accidents among the elderly has increased, mostly due to drowning caused by heat shock. In order to reduce the risk of heat shock, it is important to improve indoor thermal environment where the elderly live in. One of the ways to improve the thermal environment of a house is to increase the insulation performance of the house envelope. However, due to the high cost and the low recognition of the thermal insulation effect, insulation retrofit have not been very widespread. This study focuses on changing the floor plan which has possibility to be chosen by the elderly for house renovation. In addition, the possibility to improve the thermal environment by changing the floor plan was investigated by modeling actual houses and using thermal environment simulation for the model. The results show that the room temperature in the dressing room of model 1 and model 2 increased by 1.7K and 1.1K, respectively, around bathing time. The new index was developed to indicate the heat shock risk. A possible reduction in heat shock risk was suggested when moving between living and non-living spaces.

In this report, we analyzed the results of a questionnaire and field survey in Yokohama City to understand the actual condition of ventilation in nursery schools during intermediate season. In addition, the influence of the awareness of the nursery teacher on indoor air environment was also discussed. Estimated ventilation volume in nursery rooms by environmental adjustment activities, the estimated ventilation volume in nursery rooms of Open-window ventilation type facilities was greater than the required ventilation volume. On the other hand, some nursery rooms in Mechanically and Combined use ventilation type facilities had inadequate ventilation volume, especially during naptime. Furthermore, this may be more severe during thesummer and winter. There was a tendency for CO2 concentrations to be lower when window-opening rules were in place. These results suggest that in facilities with open window ventilation, it is possible to improve the indoor air environment throughawareness and action on the part of the nursery teacher.

<p>In this research, we defined the house adaptation that promotes barrier-free and prevents heatshock as “preventive house adaptation” which complements the long-term care insurance system. We focused on the whole tendency from view point of the repair cases in Niigata City and analyzed mainly by the qualitative aspect of the repair cases in Oita Prefecture. As a result, it was pointed out that, in addition to housing improvement by the long-term care insurance system and selfrepairing, the house improvement support system by the local government may be effective. On the other hand, we pointed that it is necessary to appropriately determine the necessity of the content of the modification, etc.</p>

<p>In order to show the direction of construction and maintenance in green wall planning for university buildings, the questionnaire surveys were performed on users to evaluate their preference of green walls with various environmental mitigation effects by conjoint analysis. For the both green-covered and uncovered buildings' users, green coverage ratio was important factor comprehensively. Especially, for green-covered building's users, the environmental mitigation effects to the rooms were found as significant value. It is considered to be cost-effective for building owners to pay maintenance cost for high coverage of green walls.</p>

As an effort to improve the thermal indoor environment for elderly residents in old non-insulated apartment buildings, the low-cost insulation retrofit method was proposed and examined its effect on energy efficiency by conducting numerical simulation of heating and cooling loads. As a result, the low-cost insulation retrofit model was able to reduce heating/cooling load by 15% compared to the uninsulated basic model. The advantage was also confirmed from the viewpoint of cost. It could be an option for elderly residents to adopt the low-cost insulation for improvement of thermal environment and energy saving.

Based on the investigation on the residential buildings in Vietnam, we created a typical tube house model for Vietnam. Effects of various passive methods, such as thermal insulation on the interior side of walls, exterior blinds, heat reflective glass, double roofs with air layers, etc. on the model house are examined with simulations. An energy saving house model is proposed combining all the effective passive methods mentioned above. It is clarified that cooling load can be reduced by the energy saving model by 47% and 35% when only the main bedroom or the whole house is air-conditioned, respectively. Based on the analyses, proposals are made for the design of tube houses in Vietnam.
