The majority of the fatalities in pedestrian traffic accidents in Japan occur while crossing the road, and ensuring safety while crossing is a major issue. One of the measures to address this issue is the introduction of bulb-outs. A bulb-out is a type of pedestrian crossings that shortens the crossing distance for pedestrians by widening the sidewalk to the side of the roadway. The advantages of introducing bulb-outs include the reduction of conflicting opportunities between pedestrians and vehicles. In this study, we conducted a walking experiment using a head-mounted display for three types of unsignalized pedestrian crossing facilities (standard type, two-stage type, bulb-out type), and conducted a comparative analysis of each crossing facility in terms of both pedestrian's walking behavior and awareness. The results showed that the introduction of bulb-outs at unsignalized crosswalks improved pedestrian safety and facilitation while crossing the road, and was an effective measure to show drivers the presence of pedestrians clearly.

Study on the Applicability of RCUT intersection to Improve the Level of Service on Arterial Roads in Japan

The actual speed on Japan's ordinary roads is lower than the speed limit, and there is a discrepancy between the travel speeds on expressways and ordinary roads, as there are many signalized intersections on arterial roads that should provide higher traffic functions. In addition, congestion on arterial roads causes various problems, such as reduced smoothness of medium-distance travel and reduced safety on residential roads, and it is necessary to construct a road network with a functional hierarchy to improve the quality of the road network. In foreign countries, a new type of intersection called Alternative Intersections has been introduced, which is less expensive than a multi-level intersection, and has the effect of improving the smoothness and safety of intersections. This study focuses on a control method called RCUT, which is a type of Alternative Intersections, and compares and analyzes conventional and RCUT control methods using simulation to clarify the effects of reducing travel time and increasing travel speed on arterial roads by introducing RCUT in Japan as a new option for intersection improvement.

It is considered that recent change of rail usage is heterogeneous by individuals. In addition, it is expected that big data provides insights that have not been perceived by existing official statistics. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to classify the changes in people’s rail usage due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) spread in terms of the usage frequency by individuals, based on historical ticket gate data in a station at multiple time, and reveal that the changes are diverse and heterogeneous. Patterns of changes in rail usage by individuals is revealed with focusing on 8, 037 people who are considered habitual rail usage and who were commuter regularly on weekdays at least a certain number of times in both 2018 and 2019, and using the concept of elasticity diagrams: did not change much, changed and returned, did not return. The significance of this study is visualization of these diversity and heterogeneity which are not revealed only by average change in number of users.

In 2018, a traffic accident occurred at a bus stop in Yokohama City. A 10-year-old girl who got off the bus and crossed behind the bus was struck by an oncoming vehicle. In response to it, bus stops have been relocated or removed to improve safety at bus stops in Japan. However, there has been no widespread use of cautionary measures at bus stops targeting regular drivers. In addition, previous studies and surveys have focused on crossings outside of crosswalks at bus stops, not crossings from the shadows of buses and crossings while attempting to get on a bus. This study aims to clarify the actual situation of crossings by bus passengers, focusing on crossings from the shadows of buses and on crossings while attempting to get on buses. Observations from inside buses suggested that the rate of crossing at 10 m in front of and behind buses was high at the bus stops in front of stations. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the rate of crossing at 10 m in front of and behind buses is higher when the speed limit is 30 km/h, when the traffic signal is far away, and when there is a non-signalized intersection on the opposite side of the road. Based on the results of this analysis, we suggested that road markings should be provided at bus stops with non-signalized intersections because they reduce the danger of both crossings from the shadow of buses and crossings from the shadow of non-signalized intersections.

Vientiane’s public transport (PT) modal share decreased by around 70% from 2007 to 2019, and due to COVID-19, only 8 city bus routes are operating in 2023 (50% decrease from 2019). Private modes are increasing since they are reliable and comfortable, but at the cost of traffic congestion and environmental degradation. Shifting to PT is needed to reverse this trend, however, the state bus operator Vientiane State Bus Enterprise (VCSBE) is unable to improve services without financial support. This paper studies the potential of mode shift of government officials from private modes to increase PT ridership in CBD using commuting allowance policies. Statistical analysis was used to study modal choice factors of government officials. Additionally, multinomial logit regression model was used to identify commuting allowance policy preference based on sociodemographic and PT service characteristics. The model revealed specific service improvements and policy preferences to improve PT service in Vientiane.

While transit-oriented development (TOD) encourages sustainable travel behavior and reduces vehicle kilometers traveled (VKT), most previous studies have explored the impact of built environment characteristics on travel behavior in developed nations, and little is known about developing economies, particularly in Asian regions such as Pakistan. Our study fills this research gap and examines the impact of TOD attributes on residents’ travel behavior around bus rapid transit (BRT) stations using 426 respondents in Lahore. We employed a multilevel mixed-effect regression model to understand the impact of TOD attributes on VKT. This study concluded that TOD residents are more likely to use BRT, walking, and motorcycles and drive less than transit-adjacent development residents. Moreover, the model results demonstrate that population density, residential density, and land-use diversity were not significantly associated with VKT. Our results suggest that high-density mixed-use development strategies reduce VKT and encourage transit and non-motorized use for sustainable travel behavior.

While sustainability is a goal for many cities, there is no consensus on what it means and how to apply it to public transport. This paper examines sustainability and its application to the Philippines' local public transport route plan (LPTRP) for small and medium cities. Text mining and topic modeling explored categories representing sustainable transport indicators from academic literature. Results showed transport planning and walkability indicators are the most relevant topics. Indicators are evaluated with data availability and applicability in the Philippines. Transportation experts confirmed the application of sustainability indicators in the LPTRP. These are 1) accessibility and satisfaction of the transport system. 2) system accessibility to other locations. 3) investments in transport and infrastructure. And 4) the degree to which transport planning is comprehensive. Lastly, this paper suggests ways to apply the selected indicators in preparing sustainable public transport plans for small and medium cities.

Recently, the number of public transportation users has decreased because of the impact of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) spread. However, not all users have equally decreased their public transportation usage, and changes in use are different for each individual. Therefore, this study aims to examine the change in rail usage based on certain attributes and the details of the change in terms of usage time, focusing on those who did not change their high usage frequency. For such characteristic attributes in terms of the percentage of high frequency rail users, the degree of change and its volume were investigated using cluster analysis. The findings indicate that the degree of change in rail usage is diverse, which means that the change depends on people.

In recent years, urban redevelopment projects with high-rise condominiums have been undertaken around railway station areas. It is thought that such urban redevelopment projects contribute to forming compact city. However, such urban redevelopment projects have been approved without sufficient evaluation of their impact on the region. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to clarify the impact of such urban redevelopment projects on the formation of compact cities and their effects, and examine the future of urban redevelopment projects around railway station areas. As a result of the study, it is revealed that such urban redevelopment projects do not necessarily lead to the realization of compact cities in all items.

Preventive resettlement can mitigate the risks of climate-induced disasters for people living in vulnerable areas. However, given the risks of resettlement, especially its impact on resettlers' livelihoods, it is important to identify individuals whose livelihoods are changed by climate-induced resettlement. This study evaluates a climate-induced resettlement project in a flood-prone area in Jakarta Special Province, Indonesia. The study identified changes in the livelihood vulnerability of resettled households by using the Livelihood Vulnerability Index, which comprises seven major components: socio-demographic profile, livelihood strategy, social networks, health, water, finance, and exposure. We conducted a questionnaire survey in five Rusunawa (public apartments) with 312 households that had resettled from nine original communities. We asked about resettlers' socio-economic status, jobs and income, physical condition, receipt of subsidies, and flood damage before and after resettlement. The values of each indicator in Livelihood Vulnerability Index before and after resettlement were calculated to demonstrate how households' livelihoods changed after the resettlement. The results showed that the exposure, livelihood strategy, and health components of vulnerability were significantly reduced after respondents moved to a less flood-prone location, the built environment of the Rusunawa, and due to the government subsidies associated with the resettlement project. In contrast, other major components, such as social networks, water access, and finance, became more vulnerable due to the loss of kinship and economic activity that had roots in the respondents’ original communities.

There are many cases where Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) is adopted to prevent traffic accidents relevant to right-turning vehicles at the conventional diamond interchange in Western countries. This paper aims to evaluate the safety of vehicles and pedestrians at DDI based on subject experiments for Japanese drivers and pedestrians by means of a driving simulator and head mount display after virtually reproducing the intersection model in the 3D virtual reality space with reference to the existing intersection shape in Japan. With respect to the driving experiment, compared to the conventional diamond interchange, it is found that DDI has a deceleration effect on vehicles and tends to induce the drivers’ yielding behavior to pedestrians. Additionally, from the perspective of pedestrians, it is revealed that DDI has a superiority in ease of safety confirmation when crossing via analysis of pedestrians’ head motion. Also, the model analysis using the ordered logit model and structural equation model indicates that rearrangement of sidewalk design will lead to creating positive awareness of pedestrians.

In the parking lots of expressway rest areas, the use of small cars during the daytime on weekends and large cars during the nighttime on weekdays is concentrated, resulting in a difference in the sizes of vehicles that fill up the parking lots depending on the time of day. Considering the limited parking lots space, expressway companies took a measure to convert some of the conventional large-vehicle-only lots to “Flexible Parking Lots”. In the Flexible Parking Lots, two small cars are allowed to park in parallel depending on the congestion in the parking lot, but there are few previous studies that quantitatively show how much it contributes to reducing congestion. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to quantitatively verify how the introduction and installation ratio of Flexible Parking Lots affect the occurrence of vehicles giving up to park and the overall parking lot occupancy rate. The results of the simulation analysis revealed that the number of vehicles leaving the parking area can be reduced by installing Flexible Parking Lots, and that the actual occupancy rate, calculated based on the width of the parking cells, is generally high.

In the estimation of traffic capacity at stop-controlled intersections in Japan, overseas parameter values are used due to the lack of studies in Japan. However, the usage of overseas values may lead to overestimation and underestimation of traffic capacity in Japan because these traffic environments may be different. In this study, using the parameter values at the stop-controlled intersection obtained from the observation survey in Japan, various comparative analysis was conducted. As a result, it was clarified that the parameter values at the stop-controlled intersection in Japan are influenced by the angle of the intersection, the type of vehicle, the time of day, and so on. Furthermore, it was shown that the measured traffic capacity can be reproduced by the parameter values obtained in this study.

In recent years, several studies have pointed out changes in traffic flow on expressways over time, and the investigation of the causes of these changes has become an urgent issue. In light of this, the purpose of this study is to clarify the changes over time in traffic flow at several points on the Metropolitan Expressway by comparing three different period and to examine the causes of these changes. From a macro perspective, a comparative analysis of QV diagrams and 99% tile value traffic volumes and speeds was conducted, and from a micro perspective, a comparative analysis of speeds, traffic volumes, and time headway within the platoon before and after the breakdown was conducted. As a result, in general, the QV diagram showed a shrinking trend, the 99% tile value traffic volume and the traffic volume before and after the breakdown showed a decreasing trend, while the rate of platoon generation before and after the breakdown showed an increasing trend. The statistical analysis suggested that changes in traffic volume are affected by changes in average time headway, heavy vehicle ratio, number of vehicles constituting a platoon, and platoon generation rate.

The ticket pass data in railway stations contain information on entry and exit at stations for each ticket unit over a long period of time, making it possible to obtain individual travel behavior data such as frequency and time of use. The purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristics of the decrease in habitual railway usage by focusing on changes in frequency and time of use by individuals who are considered to have decreased their habitual railway usage due to the recent rapid changes in social conditions. First, the relationship between the amount of each change and the attributes of each individual, such as age, gender, and ticket type, is summarized. Then, following characteristics are clarified quantitatively by multiple regression analysis: (1) among those whose habitual railway usage has decreased, the change in usage habits may be considered to be greater among younger people, and (2) while the time of day when younger people ride the train has changed, the time of day when elderly people ride the train may not have changed at all.

The majority of traffic fatalities in Japan occurs during road crossings, partly due to the low rate of vehicles stopping at unsignalized crosswalks. One of these measures to prevent such accidents is the installation of road markings. Road markings have an advantage that they can be installed at a low cost, but there is also a problem that the markings and color schemes are not standardized across regions. In this study, driving experiments using a driving simulator was conducted to clarify the effects of the proposed road markings on drivers’ driving behavior and driving awareness when approaching an unsignalized crosswalk, using “Slow Down”, “Be Careful of Pedestrians”, colored pavement, and no countermeasure. In addition, factor analysis was conducted to understand the influence of the countermeasures on drivers’ driving behavior, and it was shown that drivers mainly shift to deceleration behavior when they see the road markings and that the visibility of the road markings affects the promotion of deceleration behavior.

As one of the efforts toward the social implementation of automated driving, the commercial launch of automated valet parking services in parking lots has been targeted, and in November 2018, a functional demonstration experiment was conducted using an actual parking lot. However, there are currently no examples of practical social implementation of automated valet parking services using automated driving technology in Japan. In this paper, we review the activities related automated valet parking in Japan, and discuss the challenges for social implementation, including the formation of an ecosystem from a business perspective, the establishment of a revenue model based on users’ value, and social implementation scenarios.

This study aims to clarify the current status of disaster prevention measures by management associations of super-high-rise condominiums and their impact on the disaster preparedness of surrounding areas and to understand the characteristics of super-high-rise condominiums with/without advanced disaster prevention measures. As a result of a questionnaire survey of management associations of condominiums, about 40% of management associations do not have a disaster prevention manual. Furthermore, management associations that stockpile food and drinking water account for about 30% and 50%, respectively. Therefore, it is expected that the disaster response in the surrounding areas will be burdened when a disaster occurs. Furthermore, it became clear that, in general, there are differences in the disaster preparedness of management associations between regions, that there are differences depending on the size of the condominium, and that condominiums built in the latest year tend to be less advanced in disaster preparedness.

This study aims to identify bus commuters’ intention to shift their travel mode to Yangon Circular Railway (YCR) after modernization by the upgrading project. A questionnaire survey to bus commuters was conducted, and the binary logit modeling analyzed the affecting factors on their intention of the modal shift. The result shows that the primary users of the upgraded YCR will be residents of the YCR station area who commute to their workplaces in YCR station areas. Then, the high-density development of residences and workplaces in the station area is highly expected to increase passengers of YCR. Those whose house and workplace is far from bus stops are also more likely to shift to YCR. So, the east and north sides of YCR lines, far from the bus route, will attract more passengers. Also, those who have longer commuting time and are caught in a long traffic jam have a stronger intention for the modal shift. Scenarios about YCR fare and shortened commuting time by the modal shift are developed, and the number of respondents who will shift to the YCR was calculated for each scenario. From the scenario analysis, reducing commuting time for 5-10 minutes greatly impacts the modal shift to the YCR, especially those who need to transfer between YCR and a bus. Then, some measures to reduce the transfer time are expected to encourage their modal shift. In addition, the YCR fare increase also has a significant impact on discouraging the modal shift, especially for those who need to transfer between the YCR and a bus. Therefore, introducing the integrated fare system between the bus and the train is recommended to encourage the modal shift.

This study focuses on the travel behavior between the station, its periphery and the home as a small unit, town and village, of travel behavior for the urban transportation planning which the users need. The purpose of this study is to clarify the heterogeneity of mode choice and the relationship with its factors quantitatively, focusing on the habitual nature of individuals. It was conducted a structural equation modeling based on the mode choice frequency in order to clarify the factors of mode choice which cannot be understood by conventional methods assuming individuals as being homogeneous. It revealed that heterogeneity of walking choice is influenced by three factors, possibility of being picked up and dropped off, medium- to long-distance commuters and walking difficulty. While it revealed that heterogeneity of bus choice is influenced by the three factors of convenience of the bus, commuters in multi-person households and walking difficulty.

Disaster risk generates a complex result if it intersects with human activities, such as poverty. A cross-cutting framework leads to plans for reducing poverty while minimizing risk impact. Indonesia faces a high risk of disaster, which is exacerbated by poverty. Some countermeasures to these issues were implemented; however, they caused less integration. This leaves a gap in the result of implementation to the benefits, which are a poor group. A synchronized solution through a planning tool as a “soft infrastructure” is required to build the resilience of the system. This paper aims to discover the connection between three frameworks: social protection, climate change adaptation, and disaster risk reduction for a broader academic discussion. It also reviews the readiness of Indonesian policies that mainstream integrated issues. Through content analysis, this study addresses the gap between conceptual thinking and the empirical study literature regarding the integration approach. First, how does each framework address integration with others and the interrelationships among them? Second, how do the global trends of integration implementation and readiness of Indonesia’s policies integrate? It concludes with a comprehensive understanding of each framework, or when it is associated with achieving resilience.

Sustainability balances the economy, society, and environment with “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” as cited in the Brundtland Report. Research acknowledges there is no single definition of 'sustainability, and it is challenging to have it since the term is defined based on what is desirable, convenient, and measurable for the user group. This reasoning suggests there can be many definitions of sustainability, and this idea is not necessarily wrong. The concept of sustainability can and should be adapted to the local situation. Research also suggests differences in capacities of developing countries, which adds value to studying the case of developing countries.This case study is focused on a conceptual framework to define and apply environmentally sustainable transportation (EST) to local public transport route planning in the Philippines. This research explores how EST can be applied to existing land-use and transport planning policies and clarifies its role in developing countries. The paper has two parts: first, it discusses the theory and concept of sustainability. Second, the methodology for creating a conceptual framework of EST is presented and the resulting images are explained with how they can be linked to the local public transport planning policy.This research resulted in three images that show a way to define sustainable transport in the Philippines. The first image suggests a modification in the triple bottom line model by including resilience and institutional capacity. The second image clarifies elements of sustainable transportation and prioritizes safety as an essential factor that public transport systems should give more importance to. Lastly, the third image illustrates the linkages of EST with the Public Transport Modernization Program, which includes the policy on local public transport route planning. It also clarifies that EST thematic areas are related to the components of the Public Transport Modernization Program.

To reduce the bias of choosing a parking lane at a branch point, we elucidated the requirements for display contents that encourage drivers to change their behavior during high user traffic hours, using a variable message sign installed at a SA/PA on an expressway as a case study. The procedure is as follows. We organized the issues of existing information provision in terms of the relationship among driving behavior models, risk-taking, and human errors. We derived the necessary display contents from this organization, and we obtained the effects of the derived display contents through web surveys and analysis. As a result, it was derived that to prevent hazard perception errors and risk-taking and to encourage drivers to select appropriate lanes, it is necessary to resolve the uncertainty of risk estimation and to provide information like the number of cars that can be parked. It enables drivers can select a lane based on comparisons of congestion conditions. In addition, it is effective to supplement it with the following three elements to represent the entire parking lot "abstracted parking blocks", "arrows that indicate the direction to go", and "the current location represented by the shape of a car".

In March 2020 transport and economic activity in the Philippines was halted due to strict lockdown measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. As the economy slowly opened, safety measures included halving the occupancy of already capacity-strained public transport services. This resulted in commuters and essential workers seeking alternate modes of transportation, especially bicycles. Concurrently, national and local governments introduced pop-up bicycle lanes to accommodate the increasing demand. An online survey (255 respondents, August 2020) on awareness and perceptions of Filipinos of Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) was conducted to better understand possible contributions to a ″better normal″ transport situation and discussed applications of EST (active transport, walking, cycling, and e-vehicles) as a mobility response to COVID-19. Results showed 91% of respondents agree that their local government should consider implementing EST as part of ″better normal″transportation.

This study evaluates the compact city policy in Toyama City from the viewpoints of residents’ travel behavior and access to urban services. Questionnaire survey for residents was conducted and travel behavior and difficulties of access to a supermarket and a clinic are compared between inside residential promotion area and outside the area in the location normalization plan. The analysis revealed that residents living outside the area are more likely to use automobiles but residents inside the area are also heavily depend on automobiles. Now, about 90% of the residents don’t feel difficulties in access to supermarkets and clinics. The difficulties in access are related to living in areas with convenient public transportation and closeness to urban services.

In the suburbs of medium-sized cities in Thailand, which are expected to be dependent on automobile mobility due to development without public transport, individual differences in mobility are expected to arise depending on the availability of vehicles and the degree of physical ability. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the mobility of suburban residents in Khon Kaen city with consideration of individual differences. First, all the modes of transportation in the target area were identified, and then, based on the Capability Approach, the availability of each mode of transportation was clarified from the status of possession of goods and conversion capacity. In addition, a cluster analysis with the availability of each mode of transportation possessed by an individual as a variable was conducted to categorize the mobility of the residents. The results demonstrate the diversity and individual differences in the mobility of suburban residents, which are divided into three categories: "Mutual aid type" which various modes of transportation are available, "Private car dependent type" which only private cars are available, and "Public aid and Motorcycle type" which transportation services such as taxis and motorcycles are available.

The idea of road hierarchy is suggested in UK in 1963 to improve urban environment. This idea has influenced the road planning policy of the world including Japan. However, the standard of the bus service on each road is not indicated. In addition, bus route is determined based on demand and the road hierarchy is not considered. This study aims to evaluate bus route based on the structure of road hierarchy. Study area is Tama new town in Japan, because road in the area is designed systematically. This study revealed the trade-off relationship between the bus travel distance, number of lines, walking distance, and travel time. We found that from the viewpoint of the bus operator, it is preferable to set bus route on higher level roads, from the viewpoint of the bus user, it is preferable to set bus route on lower level roads.

Recently, as for bicycle traffic in Japan, traveling space has been improved throughout the country. However, there is still little discussion about traffic signal control. The coordinated signal control is also in this situation. In this study, we set the objective to obtain knowledge for traffic administrator to operate the coordinated signal control considering both automobile traffic and bicycle traffic. In the theoretical analysis using through band width, we showed that the conditional expression for operating the effective coordinated signal control considering both automobiles and bicycles is determined corresponding to both automobile's speed and bicycle's speed. In the examination of practical application using traffic simulation, comparing the results of multiple cases in the case study, we showed the optimal traffic signal control for both automobiles and bicycles. In conclusion, based on these two analyses, we summarized various factors that have the effect of coordinated signal control.

Recently, there are many streets that is aimed to be comfortable and walkable in Japan. Ideally, the most walkable street operation is pedestrian mall, however, some people are opposed to it. Therefore, the way of making good streets without shutting out cars is needed. This article aims to make clear the interaction between pedestrians and cars in shared space in Japan. The interaction is frequently occurred when a person and a car pass each other on a narrow road, especially in shared space. That situation looks dangerous, but they may recognize safety distance. We analyse video and kept record of positional relation, speed and the type of cars and pedestrians. As a result, it seems that they avoid each other by observing the other's behavior, and get the minimum safety distance that is needed when pass each other, that is about 1m.

For the future development of planning method including topographical factors, this study aims to reveal the evaluation method of topographical factors in current urban transportation plans in Japan. Through the review of transportation plans, it was found that 12 transportation plans by 9 cities have evaluated topographical factors. Those evaluation approaches can be classified into 3 groups and their indices, relationship with transportation projects in hilly districts and problems on those methodologies were revealed through interview survey with municipalities and topographical analysis with GIS.

Enhancing the function of "place" is key to generate "user-oriented design". The research aims to clarify the spatial elements and their appropriate layout of the built environment surrounding bus stops co-existing with the function of "place" for street users, in consideration of dense Japanese urban contexts. First, it conducted a literature review on international placemaking schemes. It found that a practical scheme named "Thinking beyond the Station" indicates there are 4 points of the index to measure the performance of "places". Subsequently, the research intended to find out how current bus stops in Japan perform as "place" for residents and bus users from the viewpoints of such place performance index and to designate the appropriate planning and management scheme. Edogawa ward in Tokyo was selected as a case study site since it is a Japanese representative transit environment planning case coordinated with neighbor open spaces. The policy in the 1980s in the Edogawa ward prepared a comprehensive bus stop design scheme involving private landowners which are not seen in the general standards in other cities. The cross-tabulation and multivariate analysis were implemented, applying the findings of the questionnaire and field survey to collect both subjective data of users' opinions to the bus stop environment and objective data of users' activity. As a result, bus users tend to access just before the arrival time of buses. The waiting time is short due to the relatively high frequency of arrival of the bus. The number of daily users in the pocket park portion is less than 30%. Therefore, even there is a possibility that the issue of the pocket park was underestimated because there are many respondents with not much experience of use, the majority of the users pointed out no significant issues. Besides, it was suggested that the recognition of the pocket parks would lead to an increase in interest in management. The objective data revealed "private sector cooperation for bench installation" and "installation in front of the facility which is open to the general public" affect choices for staying. Because the R2 value is rather small, the observation survey at another sample in the Setagaya ward was also conducted to consider the additional possible factors to induce the user's activities. The result suggested that "visual information of approaching bus", "depth and room of open space", "connection with a building or waiting space in building" may influence the length of use time. The paper concluded that the frontage land use and location of the seating facility might influence users' stational activities by the results above. The mechanism to foster attachment to the place is also considered as keys to a better place. The spatial design scheme in Edogawa has shaped less attachment to the transit environment by local users and neighbors even though it has achieved most of the place performance index. The lack of attachment causes some cases of the abolition of agreement with landowners. The usage time associated with public transportation is too short time to gather interests in the environment. The mechanism should include a particular process to create recognition as a local open space. It also indicated the necessity of the lower limit setting of the size as an integrated open space to keep the quality of place.

It is generally assumed that travel is a derived demand and that the time it takes is desirable to be short. However, travel time is sometimes accepted or deliberately reserved because it has meanings other than reaching a destination, and it is not clear under what conditions such recognitions are formed. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that shape recognition of travel through a survey of intentions to shorten travel time. The aggregate analysis revealed that working on the day, the mode of transportation, the attributes of the accompanying person, and the level of satisfaction with the pre-movement activities made a difference in the recognition of travel. In addition, we evaluated each factor relatively by binary logit models describing whether the trip was a target for shortening or not. The results show that the presence of adult companions makes the largest contribution to acceptance for travel time, etc. These results provide new perspectives that should be considered in future transportation planning.

Traffic congestion continues to occur at many intersections in Japan, obstructing the smooth flow of traffic. On the other hand, in recent years, the long-term reduction of traffic capacity on expressways has been attracting attention, and this phenomenon may also apply to ordinary roads. In this study, we focus on the space clearance between queued vehicles at signalized intersections, and investigates whether or not the distance changes over time, and the effect of such changes on traffic flow.As a result, space clearance have been gradually increasing, especially since the 2000s, and the increase is about one meter greater than it was 30 years ago. The results of the study suggest that the increase in space clearance is not necessarily due to the type of vehicle, but rather to changes in driver behavior. It was also found that a one-meter increase in space clearance resulted in a 15% increase in the length of the queue at intersections.

These days, "Transit Street" is being advocated in the USA. Transit Street means "the street which is prioritized for public transportation" and is mainly designed for public transportation and pedestrian. In contrast to Transit Mall, private cars also can go through Transit Street, however, some devices make them inconvenient. Some cities and associations already have published guidelines for Transit Street. In Japan, there's no concept like Transit Street, nevertheless, there's a case similar to Transit Street. The objective of this study is to suggest a guideline for public transportation prioritized streets in Japan. Then, the history, definition, and spatial elements of Transit Street and Japanese cases are reported. After that, guidelines of Japanese Transit Street are shown referring to Transit Street in the USA.

Although the crackdown was strengthened by the revision of the Road Traffic Law in 2006, still many illegal street parking has occurred. This is caused by not thoroughly enforcing illegal parking control. In central business district, demand for short-time parking such as cargo handling is increasing, and it is considered that on-street parking allowable space dealing with this demand is necessary. In this research, we proposed on-street parking allowance space on the main arterial road in consideration of the traffic flow and on a narrow street in consideration of the influence on pedestrian from the field survey results. By suggesting newly important crackdown space from this research, we clarified that the total crackdown distance is about half compared with the current situation. According to the concept of parking cost, it was revealed that illegal parking costs will be higher than legitimate on-street parking by doing a patrol once an hour. It also showed that it is effective for suppressing illegal parking by the proposed crackdown frequency.

Increased passengers' bus waiting irritations at bus stops by bus facility types is one of the factors that decrease users'use intentions. Passengers' waiting behavior at bus stops has not been discussed sufficiently so far although it should be one of the key factors of bus attractions. Using the behavior observation data, this study aims to identify the factors of the bus waiting irritation by analyzing the effect of bus facility types to passengers' waiting behavior depending on the operation services and individual attributes. Analyzing the behavior observation acquired data revealed the differences of the bus waiting behavior in each bus facility type by the operation services and individual attributes. Also, conducting variance analysis to reveal the factors of bus waiting irritations. At the result, the factors of increasing and decreasing bus waiting irritations are bus facility types, the frequency of bus services and passengers' information acquisition methods of bus.

In Japan, there is little discussion about traffic signal control for bicycle traffic. Bicycle traffic running through roadway obeys traffic signal for automobiles. However, since clearance interval of traffic signal for automobiles is decided based on automobile's speed, it is inadequate for bicycle traffic and then there is some possibility of leaving bicycle traffic at signalized intersections when traffic lights change. In this study, observation survey was conducted at some signalized intersections and the collected data were used to analyze problems of bicycle's clearance. As a result, there were some factors, for example, traffic signal control and geometric structure of signalized intersection, of leaving bicycle traffic in signalized intersections. Analysis also found that clearance interval for bicycle traffic that is calculated by using the speed of bicycles was larger than that of traffic signal for automobiles. From the results of observation survey, this paper mentioned knowledge for making a guideline of traffic signal control considering bicycles.

For the future development of planning method including topographical factors, this study aims to reveal the influence of altitude and slope to mode choice. Original travel survey was conducted in Yokohama, Japan to collect revealed preference data with high spatial resolution. By tabulated analysis, decreasing trend of walk share and increasing trend of bus and taxi along the increase of difference in elevation were revealed. Disaggregated analysis by the development of logit model revealed that difference in elevation has a negative effect to the utility of walk. By comparing parameters, it was revealed that 1m difference in elevation is equal to 12-meter walk or 21.9 JPY payment. Also, it was revealed that difference in elevation from bus stop has a negative effect to the utility of bus and 1-meter difference is equal to 10.4 JPY payment.

In recent years, Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), which aims to control the dependence on private cars by integrally development of transportation and land use, has attracted attention. Although the Tama Den-en Toshi is considered to be one of the advanced cases of TOD, traffic congestion by private cars is seen around the railway station, and it can be said that there is a problem in controlling dependence on private cars. In this research, we focus on the concept of controlling dependence on private cars which is intended by TOD and aim to evaluate the dependence of private cars around the railway station in the Tama Den-en Toshi. As a result, for commuting and attending school purposes, it seems that TOD's conrol of dependence on private cars, but for private purposes it got a problem. Factors of promoting dependence on private cars for private purpose were obtained as moving distance and climbing distance, and high road ratio in case of many elderly people. As a countermeasure to these, we examined ways to switch the mode to bus from private cars.

The Thailand-China High Speed Rail (HSR) project is a government to a government investment project and under construction for the first stage of Northeastern route. This HSR project will span across Thailand, Laos and Kunming and also plans to reach Malaysia and Singapore in the future. The pathway is a strategic route to increase the potential and economic opportunity for Thailand as well as supports Thailand as a regional land transportation hub in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). However, the project has some barriers that the Thai government could carefully consider to solve and protect all problems in this situation and may appear in the next phase. Especially, transit-oriented development (TOD) is one of the most influential factors to generate significantly welfare and benefits inclusive to drive the development of the sustainable HSR project as well.

To alleviate congestions at signalized intersections, Displaced Left-turn Crossovers (DLTs), also known as Continuous Flow Intersections (CFIs) are becoming as prevalent treatments over the past decade in some developed cities around the world. Through the novel solution provided by DLTs, left turn flows could cross the opposing traffic lanes upstream of the main intersection. As a result, DLTs lead to higher capacities, lower delays and fewer crashes. In spite of the extensive preliminary studies focused on the operational performance of DLTs, little research has been conducted considering the coordination of DLTs. In addition, although the considerable sparse works highlighted the DLT intersection, the heterogeneous traffic condition as a dominant operation environment in lots of developing countries has never been estimated. Hence, in order to fulfill the heterogeneous condition needs and considering the coordination of DLTs, the driving force of this study context is developing a real-time demand-responsive signal control system on the solid foundation of the optimization principles. This entire algorithm was built based on developing a mathematical model and utilizing PTV-VISSIM as a micro-simulator based approach. In order to test the proposed algorithm, an inter-process communication and dynamic object creation were provided by employing VISSIM-COM interface and MATLAB a multi-paradigmnumerical computing environment. Although the academic in nature, the proposed algorithm presented in this context could be evolved through a real-world practical application. As a realistic study case, actually obtained data were made available of three signalized intersections located in an arterial corridor in central Cairo, Egypt.

This article highlights the operational performance evaluation of consecutive signalized intersections under heterogeneous traffic conditions. It investigates the impacts of such traffic conditions, as a dominant operation in developing cities, on a set of four signalized intersections located in an urban arterial corridor in Cairo, Egypt. Therefore, the influences of complexities due to the heterogeneity in traffic operation including the diverse static and dynamic properties of vehicles, aggressive drivers' behavior and the lack of lane discipline were investigated. To accomplish this research objective, PTV-VISSIM, as a microsimulation environment was employed to analyze and estimate the Level of Service (LOS) of the studied intersections. To represent the studied intersections as indisputable as the reality, special attention was given to calibrating and validating different simulation parameters. The results emphasized the significant impact of the heterogeneous traffic conditions on the studied intersections, especially under heavy traffic conditions during peak hours. The intersections throughputs, delays, discharge rates and the total travel time was dramatically impacted. This study recommends the necessity of deployments new innovative schemes, in which the operational performance of the existing conventional intersections could be enhanced. Unconventional intersection designs as a viable interstation treatment could be proposed to alleviate congestions.

In the Tokyo metropolitan area, cities were formed along with railway maintenance. The number of railway transportation personnel in the Tokyo metropolitan area in recent years is increasing. However, if you check the trends in number of passengers individually, you can check many reduced railway stations. Focusing on the railway station where the number of passengers dropped, we aim to present future tasks at the railway station where passengers have decreased. As a result, it was revealed that the railway station where the number of passengers has declined is affected by other railway stations and that the decline in living standards due to the decrease in commercial facilities becomes a problem. By comparing the amount of commercial facility accumulation in the vicinity of the railway station and the whole area, we could show the accumulation amount of the desired commercial facilities around the railway station. From the analysis, we made proposals on points to consider in future railway network development in the suburbs of Tokyo metropolitan area.

In Japan the road bridge is facing rapid deterioration and its damage is serious. As a results, even if preventive maintenance are carried out, its repair and renewal expenses are huge and it's difficult to maintain all road bridges with preventive maintenance type. Therefore, there is a need to adopt not only preventive maintenance but also abolition of road bridge. But in order to gain understanding of the residents, a method to objectively show the effect and impact of abolition of the road bridge is required. In this study, we presented a method to compare the reduction effect of future maintenance and renewal cost and the loss due to the decline of area utility as calculation of cost effectiveness by abolition of bridge. As a result of calculation, there were no bridges with the effect of abolition. However, compared to other bridges, there were bridges with low maintenance effect and there is a possibility that these bridges have room for abolishment. In addition, we presented how to maintain including abolition of bridge as follows. When you abolish the bridge, it is one way to show the proposed infrastructure to compensate for losses. On the other hand, the effect of maintaining the bridge increases by decreasing maintenance costs.

Although seven years have passed since the Bangkok Bus Rapid Transit System started the operation as one of the mass transit system in Bangkok, it has some problem that the number of users is less than expected and it had lost about 1.0 billion THB over the past seven years. Then, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) once decided to shut down the BRT at the end of April 2017. But after that, BMA stopped the abolition due to lack of public transportation along the BRT corridor and the collection of investment funds. Therefore, this study focuses on the sustainability of Bangkok BRT from technical and financial points of view. First, the analysis from the technical points of view revealed that harmonizing BRT operation with traffic signal control may reduce some factors worsening punctuality and increase the number of BRT operation with the same number of vehicles, without increasing the cost. And the analysis from financial points of view revealed the possibility of existence of BRT headway and operating section that may activate the potential of the BRT system.

There are conflict points between through vehicles and right turn vehicles at grade intersections. Some countries, especially United States, propose and introduce Alternative Intersections (AI) which may offer additional benefits compared to conventional intersections. The objective in this study is to obtain knowledge for the applicability of AI in Japan. First, We selected intersections where AI is considered to be applicable from existing intersections in Japan and virtually reproduced AI using micro traffic simulation with observation data as basic input data and evaluated its performance. In addition, we evaluated whether Japanese drivers can drive through AI without hesitation and anxiety using driving simulator. As a result, we showed positive and negative reactions of Japanese drivers to AI which could be mitigated by careful design treatments.

Nowadays, the historical cities such as Important Preservation Districts of Traditional Buildings are getting popular among tourists. In these cities, old and narrow roads remain. It would be dangerous for pedestrians to walk around the area if the number of cars used by tourists increases. This study aims to make it clear how pedestrians are influenced by cars running in these cities to use parking space. We define that walkability is evaluated by the frequency of crossing flow lines of pedestrians and vehicles and proximity of cars to pedestrians. Then, we estimate that how walkability would change if parking space is relocated.
