The method of nearby problems (MNP) developed by Roy et al. is a sophisticated verification procedure, in which the problems with exact solutions near the target problem of interest can be generated by a curve fitting of a numerical solution to a continuous function. In this work, we apply this approach to large deformation problems of nearly incompressible hyperelasticity. Nearby solutions are constructed by the projection of a finite element solution of displacement onto an approximating function space using the inner product in the Sobolev space H1. In this projection, a penalty term associated with volumetric deformation is introduced to impose the nearly incompressible property on nearby solutions.

The voxel-based FEM is an efficient numerical procedure to deal with complex geometries. It is difficult to analyze models containing contact conditions by this procedure, in which surfaces of objects are represented as stepwise shapes. In the voxel modeling based on the finite cover method (FCM), geometry is defined by using surface modeling procedures such as polyhedrons and the level set method instead of voxel representation and hence contact problems can be set more easily. In this paper, a contact algorithm for the FCM is proposed. The penalty method is widely used for contact constraint, and then a large penalty parameter, which needs to be employed to assure accuracy, may cause numerical instability. Moreover, in the FCM, it is difficult to manage positions of integration points for contact constraints and inaccurate distribution of contact stress may be obtained due to an over-constraint with concentration of integration points. In this paper, the Nitsche's method is applied to contact constraint in the FCM in order to circumvent difficulties arising in the penalty method. To show effectiveness of our approach, we calculate several 2D frictionless contact problems.

This study discusses the numerical properties of finite element procedures for eigenvalue analysis of free vibration in elastic solid structures. Exact solutions for a three-dimensional rectangular domain with the slip boundary condition, in which stationary P and S wave modes can be obtained separately, were adopted for comparison with numerical solutions. The distributions and numerical errors of the eigenvalues obtained by different finite element schemes were characterized in detail. Numerical performance was evaluated by utilizing particular stationary P and S wave modes in the cylindrical domain.

Explicit time integrators are suitable for wave propagation phenomena. If they are applied to the transient analysis of nearly incompressible materials such as rubber-like materials, it is necessary to use a small time step size determined from the speed of wave propagation of the volumetric deformation component with high stiffness. In this paper, the Rattle method for the constrained Hamiltonian problem is extended to develop a novel splitting time integrator for nearly incompressible elasticity.

The simultaneously iterative procedure for elastic-plastic boundary value problems proposed by the authors is extended to elastoplastic problems under plane stress state. The authors define a coupled problem of the equilibrium equation, the yield equation, and the plane stress condition at every material points, and develop a numerical procedure based on the block Newton method to solve them with simultaneous linearization. In the proposed block Newton method, the tangent moduli can be constructed algebraically by eliminating the internal variables, which are also updated algebraically without local iterative calculation. In addition, the residuals of yield criterion and plane stress state are incorporated into the linearized equilibrium equation. Hence, the proposed procedure enables us to decrease the residuals in the coupled boundary value problems simultaneously. Some numerical examples illustrate the validity and the effectiveness of the procedures under plane stress state with material nonlinearity.

In this work, the mixed finite element method, in which the transverse shear stresses are taken as unknown variables, is applied to dynamic problems of the Mindlin–Reissner plate. The splitting time integrator that works as an explicit method for bending deformation and as an implicit method for transverse shear deformation is adopted. The proposed approach relaxes the restriction on the time interval of an explicit method for plate bending problems by employing an implicit scheme targeted at only the minor transverse shear deformation. Numerical experiments demonstrated that the proposed approach exhibits superior numerical properties compared to conventional time integrators in terms of time interval and accuracy.

In this study, we propose a credibility factor to evaluate the credibility of material model and its parameters calibrated from material tests, based on the concept of credibility evaluation of simulation models presented in ASME V&V-40. In solid simulations, it is common to identify material parameters so as to reproduce the response obtained in material tests, so the reproducibility of this response alone is not sufficient to evaluate the credibility of the simulation model. This paper proposes a new credibility factor and its gradations, checking the reproducibility of responses that are not used for parameter identification. Using 4-point bending tests on plastic materials and wood as examples, we will show the difference in credibility evaluation for calibrated model that only identify parameters and one that confirm the reproducibility of other responses.

In this paper, a simple simulation strategy for sintering ceramics is proposed as thermal-structural problems. Assuming that thermal and mechanical deformations are independent, the total deformation is decomposed into thermal and mechanical component, and they are also decomposed into reversible and irreversible components. For the thermal irreversible strain, Master Sintering Curve is employed, and Peric's viscoplasticity model is used for the mechanical irreversible strain. The model is introduced into ANSYS, thermal-structural analysis with User Programmable Feature (UPF). The simulation is validated by comparing with sintering experiment with/without external axial compression load.

The response of stress of hiperselastic materials such as rubber generally exhibits complex non-linear behavior. Although the conventional identification of the material constants are carried out by using results of three types biaxial material tests, the results of stress analysis using these identified material parameters are not always satisfactory in accuracy. In this study, a novel methodorogy for identification of material parameters is proposed, which incorporates the importance evaluation of results of material testings in material constants by considering the deformation state appearing in stress analysis of target problems and the effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated by numerical experiments.

In this paper, a simple simulation strategy for sintering ceramics is proposed by referring to the experimental results of the deformation profile obtained from a thermomechanical analysis (TMA) under uniaxial compression loads. Assuming that mechanical and thermal deformations are independent, the total deformations are decomposed into mechanical and thermal components, and each deformation component is divided into reversible and irreversible deformations. The thermal and mechanical reversible deformations are represented by the commonly accepted models, namely thermal expansion and linear elasticity. For the thermal irreversible strain (sintering strain), the Master Sintering Curve (MSC), which considers microscopic thermodynamics from a macroscopic perspective, is employed. This facilitates the prediction of any densification evolution without stress and decreases the number of experiments required for parameter fittings. The viscoplasticity model is used for the mechanical irreversible strain to represent the creep deformation in sintering ceramics under stress. In this model, the temperature dependence of the viscosity parameter and density dependence of the yield stress are introduced. The sintering simulation was performed by installing a model with a User Programmable Feature (UPF) into ANSYS thermal–structural analysis. The simulations were validated by comparing the simulation deformation profiles with other sintering experiments under uniaxial compression loads that were not used for the modeling.

In this paper, the verification of a free vibration analysis of elasticity is discussed. An eigenvalue problem possessing solvable solutions is proposed for verification of the code and evaluation of numerical properties in real calculations. A homogenous and isotropic elastic material and cylindrical domain are employed and stationary modes of P-wave are considered as specific eigenmodes of vibration. A process to compare numerical solutions and exact ones proposed in this work is also presented and numerical properties of several finite element approximations are investigated.

It is essential to deal with contact problems in assembly analyses of mechanical components. However, the usual voxel-based FEM with consideration of contact conditions often exhibits numerical difficulties. In this paper, a practical procedure for 3D frictionless contact in the voxel-based FEM using the EBE-PCG method based on the finite cover method (FCM) is proposed. To assure accuracy in the penalty method for contact conditions, a large penalty parameter, which causes numerical instability and convergence deterioration in iterative linear solvers, is required. In this paper, the Nitsche's method is applied to contact constraint in the FCM to circumvent such difficulties. Moreover, the ghost penalty is employed to alleviate instability caused by elements with minuscule volume fraction in the FCM. A multi-phased analysis using different voxel size is also proposed to accelerate calculation. To show the effectiveness of the present approach, we calculate basic and practical 3D contact problems.

Elastic buckling of cylindrical shell under pressure load evaluated on surface

This paper presents a numerical procedure using shell element to evaluate the buckling behavior of the cylindrical structure subjected to pressure load. In numerical simulation for pressure vessels using conventional shell elements, the pressure loads imposed to both top and bottom surfaces are expressed as the difference between the internal and external pressures. In this work, the special shell element, in which the surface traction is exactly expressed at the surface, is applied to the buckling analysis. In this approach, the distribution of the transverse normal stress through the thickness can be evaluated. Therefore, the influence of the difference between the internal and the external pressures to the behavior of the buckling of the cylindrical shell structures can be assessed. In the situation that a perturbative load is applied under a certain stress state, bifurcation points are searched by solving a standard eigenvalue problem. Several numerical examples are presented to examine the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The buckling behavior that cannot be considered with the conventional shell elements can be observed by this approach.

In this paper, we apply numerical verification procedures proposed by the authors to finite element analyses using commercial codes. We consider contact problems of elastic bodies and employ the method of nearby problems. The nearby solutions are constructed for each body by the projection of the original finite element solution onto function space of spline using the inner product in the Sobolev space H1. Equivalent nodal force vectors associated with external forces can be derived directly from the nearby solutions by the weak formulation. The numerical solution of the nearby problems is compared with that of the original one and we confirm that the traction force of the nearby problem causes the similar deformation to that given by the original contact problem.

In the finite element analysis, it is important to evaluate the local behavior at the portion where the thickness is discontinuous or near the corners. If such structure is discretized with structural elements, the numerical results are often unreliable, because the plane stress condition is assumed in the transverse direction and the incompressibility could not be considered appropriately. Thus, the authors proposed that the effective procedure of discretizing the model is to connect shell and solid elements properly by using Nitsche's method.
When the different types of elements are connected at the boundary including corners, the stiffness near such boundary may become larger than that of the model discretized with only one type of element. Thus, the authors propose the approach to avoid this problem by improving the mesh geometry near the boundary.
The proposed procedure can be applied to the elastoplastic problems, but it is necessary to divide the domain so that the plastic region does not progress on the connecting interface. This is because the numerical calculation becomes unstable due to the disorder of the stress state when discontinuous stress state is connected.
This paper presents a numerical procedure for connecting shell and solid elements in elastoplastic problems. In the proposed approach, shell and solid elements can be coupled with reasonable deformation near the connecting interface, only when the plastic range is not included on the connecting interface.

A Study on Numerical Evaluation of Instability for Cylindrical Structures under Pressure Loading

This paper presents a numerical procedure to evaluate the buckling of cylindrical structures under pressure load with shell element appropriately. In a situation where the internal and external pressures are subjected to the top and bottom surfaces of cylindrical shells, it is difficult to evaluate the influence of the pressure load of the structure appropriately, due to the complicated loading conditions. Numerical solutions, which are obtained by using conventional shell elements, and analytical solutions are expressed by using the difference between the internal and the external pressures as the external force. On the other hand, solid elements can be employed to model the loading conditions properly, but huge computational cost may be required. In this work, the authors propose a numerical procedure for buckling analysis that evaluates the pressure load appropriately in the framework of the structural elements.

In this paper, ductile fracture simulation under the multiaxial loading is examined. Ductility of the material is considered by damage model, moreover, crack propagation is described by the finite cover method. Predicting the crack propagation phenomena about the metal material is necessary for the engineering field. Finite element method (FEM) is widely used to predict the metalworking and fracture process involves necking, crack, and failure. However, FEM is not good at predicting crack propagation. The generalized finite element method is good at describing discontinuous field like a fracture. Finite cover method(FCM), which defines the multiple covers, is one of the candidates to describe the discontinuous deformation. Moreover, a lot of constitutive equation has devised in order to deal with complex material behavior. Though there are many material constants, they sometimes have no physical meaning. In this study, a simplified Lemaitre model with FCM is employed to crack propagation simulation under multi-axial loading by applying different combinations of normal and transverse loads to the model. Some respective examples show the result of crack propagation and examine the effect of the multi-axial loading.
