<p>We are developing a microwave pulse generator, whose pulse width and amplitude can be arbitrarily controlled, to manipulate superconducting quantum computing systems. The proposed microwave pulse generator is made using superconducting circuits. It can be placed at a 4.2 K or lower temperature stages to control a large-scale quantum computing system effectively. One of the key components of the microwave pulse generator is the timing controller, which generates trigger pulses for the microwave switch to start and stop the microwave irradiation. The target frequency of the microwave is 5 GHz, and the timing controller has to generate trigger pulses with a time resolution of several nanoseconds. We designed a 4-bit timing controller using an adiabatic quantum flux parametron (AQFP) circuit, which is extremely energy-efficient superconducting logic. The designed timing controller derives two trigger pulses, start and stop, to the microwave switch at the timing designated by digital data. We implemented the AQFP timing controller using the AIST HSTP process and demonstrated its operation at 1 GHz. Its power dissipation was estimated as about 1.25×10<sup>-9</sup> W at 1 GHz.</p>

Superconducting neural networks hold significant potential for future applications such as natural language processing and image recognition. To this end, we propose a binary neural computing unit implemented using a hybrid circuit of cryogenic CMOS and superconducting technologies. It offers two main advantages: firstly, we utilize current-mode computations for neural unit weight calculations, significantly reducing the unit's footprint and enabling the potential for higher integration in the future. Secondly, all computations are performed in a low-temperature environment, which implies the possibility of on-chip learning in superconducting neural networks and the potential for achieving faster training rates in the future. We fabricated the chip using Nb 1 kA cm−2 process (1KP) technology and experimentally verified the correctness of the circuit logic. The margins for various control parameters of the circuit are approximately around 30%, and the superconducting circuit power consumption is estimated to be around 4 microwatts.

Superconducting qubits are generally controlled by irradiation with microwave pulses. We propose a 5-GHz-range microwave pulse generator based on pulse density modulation for controlling qubits using single-flux-quantum (SFQ) circuits. The proposed microwave pulse generator comprises a 100-GHz circular shift register and a band-pass filter (BPF). In this study, we investigated the relationship between the target envelope of the microwave amplitude and the SFQ pulse density based on the transfer function for the BPF and the frequency spectrum of an SFQ pulse. We implemented a 64-bit circular shift register and demonstrated its operation up to 68 GHz.

<p>The adiabatic quantum-flux-parametron (AQFP) is an energy-efficient superconductor logic element based on the quantum flux parametron. AQFP circuits can operate with energy dissipation near the thermodynamic and quantum limits by maximizing the energy efficiency of adiabatic switching. We have established the design methodology for AQFP logic and developed various energy-efficient systems using AQFP logic, such as a low-power microprocessor, reversible computer, single-photon image sensor, and stochastic electronics. We have thus demonstrated the feasibility of the wide application of AQFP logic in future information and communications technology. In this paper, we present a tutorial review on AQFP logic to provide insights into AQFP circuit technology as an introduction to this research field. We describe the historical background, operating principle, design methodology, and recent progress of AQFP logic.</p>

Adiabatic Quantum-Flux-Parametron With Delay-Line Clocking Using Square Excitation Currents

<p>The adiabatic quantum-flux-parametron (AQFP) is an energy-efficient superconductor logic device. In a previous study, we proposed a low-latency clocking scheme called delay-line clocking, and several low-latency AQFP logic gates have been demonstrated. In delay-line clocking, the latency between adjacent excitation phases is determined by the propagation delay of excitation currents, and thus the rising time of excitation currents should be sufficiently small; otherwise, an AQFP gate can switch before the previous gate is fully excited. This means that delay-line clocking needs high clock frequencies, because typical excitation currents are sinusoidal and the rising time depends on the frequency. However, AQFP circuits need to be tested in a wide frequency range experimentally. Hence, in the present study, we investigate AQFP circuits adopting delay-line clocking with square excitation currents to apply delay-line clocking in a low frequency range. Square excitation currents have shorter rising time than sinusoidal excitation currents and thus enable low frequency operation. We demonstrate an AQFP buffer chain with delay-line clocking using square excitation currents, in which the latency is approximately 20 ps per gate, and confirm that the operating margin for the buffer chain is kept sufficiently wide at clock frequencies below 1 GHz, whereas in the sinusoidal case the operating margin shrinks below 500 MHz. These results indicate that AQFP circuits adopting delay-line clocking can operate in a low frequency range by using square excitation currents.</p>

<p>Extremely energy-efficient logic devices are required for future low-power high-performance computing systems. Superconductor electronic technology has a number of energy-efficient logic families. Among them is the adiabatic quantum-flux-parametron (AQFP) logic family, which adiabatically switches the quantum-flux-parametron (QFP) circuit when it is excited by an AC power-clock. When compared to state-of-the-art CMOS technology, AQFP logic circuits have the advantage of relatively fast clock rates (5 GHz to 10 GHz) and 5 - 6 orders of magnitude reduction in energy before cooling overhead. We have been developing extremely energy-efficient computing processor components using the AQFP. The adder is the most basic computational unit and is important in the development of a processor. In this work, we designed and measured a 16-bit parallel prefix carry look-ahead Kogge-Stone adder (KSA). We fabricated the circuit using the AIST 10 kA/cm<sup>2</sup> High-speed STandard Process (HSTP). Due to a malfunction in the measurement system, we were not able to confirm the complete operation of the circuit at the low frequency of 100 kHz in liquid He, but we confirmed that the outputs that we did observe are correct for two types of tests: (1) critical tests and (2) 110 random input tests in total. The operation margin of the circuit is wide, and we did not observe any calculation errors during measurement.</p>

Frequency synchronization of single flux quantum oscillators

We demonstrate the frequency synchronization of multiple single-flux quantum (SFQ) oscillators with different oscillation frequencies. To synchronize these SFQ oscillators, a common constant bias current is supplied to the SFQ oscillators without any bias resistors. When an SFQ oscillator oscillates at a frequency off, the average voltage across the Josephson junction comprising the SFQ oscillator is f Phi(0), where Phi(0) is the flux quantum in the superconductor. The bias currents supplied to the SFQ oscillators are redistributed to eliminate the average voltage difference output from the SFQ oscillators. As a result, the oscillation frequencies of all the SFQ oscillators are synchronized. Simulation results indicate that SFQ oscillators with an oscillation frequency difference of more than 50 GHz can be synchronized. We experimentally demonstrate the frequency synchronization of two SFQ oscillators composed of circular Josephson transmission lines. Frequency synchronization is expected to contribute toward the development of a low-power stable clock source stabilizing SFQ circuit operation.

We investigated local magnetic flux biasing (LFB) that induces a phase shift in superconductor circuits by locally applying a magnetic field through the superconductor loop with Josephson junctions. The arbitrary phase shift can be achieved using LFB without modifying the circuit fabrication process. To quantitatively evaluate the effects of introducing LFB for practical superconductor circuit applications, we designed a single flux quantum (SFQ) based non-destructive read-out flip-flop with complementary outputs (NDROC) and a delay flip-flop with complementary outputs (DFFC). The circuit area and static power consumption of the NDROC based on LFB architecture (LFB-NDROC) are approximately 67% and 36% of a conventional NDROC, respectively. The measured bias margin of the LFB-NDROC was in the range of 69%-129%. Using LFB, we were able to reduce the circuit area and power consumption for the DFFC by 67% and 83%, respectively. The measured bias margin of the DFFC with LFB was between 115% and 128%. LFB enabled us to implement a 5-to-32 SFQ decoder which comprises NDROC trees with a reduced circuit area of approximately 60% of a conventional decoder. The results obtained in this study can be applied to not just SFQ circuits but other superconductor circuits also, as they improve the area and power efficiency of such circuits.

<p>We developed a Nb 4-layer process for fabricating superconducting integrated circuits that involves using caldera planarization to increase the flexibility and reliability of the fabrication process. We call this process the planarized high-speed standard process (PHSTP). Planarization enables us to flexibly adjust most of the Nb and SiO<sub>2</sub> film thicknesses; we can select reduced film thicknesses to obtain larger mutual coupling depending on the application. It also reduces the risk of intra-layer shorts due to etching residues at the step-edge regions. We describe the detailed process flows of the planarization for the Josephson junction layer and the evaluation of devices fabricated with PHSTP. The results indicated no short defects or degradation in junction characteristics and good agreement between designed and measured inductances and resistances. We also developed single-flux-quantum (SFQ) and adiabatic quantum-flux-parametron (AQFP) logic cell libraries and tested circuits fabricated with PHSTP. We found that the designed circuits operated correctly. The SFQ shift-registers fabricated using PHSTP showed a high yield. Numerical simulation results indicate that the AQFP gates with increased mutual coupling by the planarized layer structure increase the maximum interconnect length between gates.</p>

<p>The adiabatic quantum flux parametron (AQFP) is an energy-efficient, high-speed superconducting logic device. To observe the tiny output currents from the AQFP in experiments, high-speed voltage drivers are indispensable. In the present study, we develop a compact voltage driver for AQFP logic based on a Josephson latching driver (JLD), which has been used as a high-speed driver for rapid single-flux-quantum (RSFQ) logic. In the JLD-based voltage driver, the signal currents of AQFP gates are converted into gap-voltage-level signals via an AQFP/RSFQ interface and a four-junction logic gate. Furthermore, this voltage driver includes only 15 Josephson junctions, which is much fewer than in the case for the previously designed driver based on dc superconducting quantum interference devices (60 junctions). In measurement, we successfully operate the JLD-based voltage driver up to 4 GHz. We also evaluate the bit error rate (BER) of the driver and find that the BER is 7.92×10<sup>-10</sup> and 2.67×10<sup>-3</sup> at 1 GHz and 4 GHz, respectively.</p>

<p>The recent rapid increase in the scale of superconducting quantum computing systems greatly increases the demand for qubit control by digital circuits operating at qubit temperatures. In this paper, superconducting digital circuits, such as single-flux quantum and adiabatic quantum flux parametron circuits are described, that are promising candidates for this purpose. After estimating their energy consumption and speed, a conceptual overview of the superconducting electronics for controlling a multiple-qubit system is provided, as well as some of its component circuits.</p>
