China's Trade and Production of Kidney Beans

This paper examines China's trade and production of kidney beans to explain how kidney beans competed against major grains in China's grain producing areas to become major export commodities after 1990s. Conclusions of this paper can be summarized as follows. 1) Kidney beans are exported from China to various countries all over the world. While expanding trade volumes to existing partners, China's kidney bean industry also successfully developed new overseas markets. Both existing and newly developed trade partners contributed to the growth of China's kidney bean export over the years. 2) Major producing areas of kidney beans are connected with the export sector after 2000, therefore situations in producing areas and changes in the export sector interact with each other. State-owned farms in Heilongjiang Province established production systems based on export-oriented strategies around 2000 and are now main producers of kidney beans in Northeast China.
