    My research is grounded in cultural anthropology, development anthropology, and Gender and Development (GAD), with a particular focus on the empowerment of women and children, social inclusion, and sustainable community development. Drawing on more than three decades of field engagement in Paraguay, I have conducted research in rural communities and urban informal settlements, focusing on participatory approaches to social and community development, qualitative evaluation, the preservation and revitalization of traditional crafts and cultural heritage, livelihood enhancement through local resources, and community-based agritourism.

    A central feature of my work is bridging academic research and social practice. I have developed community-engaged research that brings together universities, government institutions, international development agencies, NGOs/NPOs, and local communities to translate research into tangible social impact. As Project Manager for JICA Grassroots Technical Cooperation Projects in Paraguay, I have led initiatives in women's empowerment, livelihood improvement, local economic development, and sustainable rural development, including community-based agritourism.

    I also integrate international development practice into higher education, creating opportunities for students to engage directly with local communities, identify challenges through dialogue and fieldwork, and collaboratively develop context-sensitive solutions. Through these experiences, I seek to foster the next generation of globally minded professionals who can connect academic knowledge with real-world challenges.

    My engagement extends beyond academia through NPO initiatives that support educational opportunities and inclusive spaces for children in Japan and abroad. By creating a dynamic cycle among research, education, and social engagement, my work seeks to connect local and global perspectives and contribute to more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable societies in which diverse voices are respected and no one is left behind.

    Dr. Yoko Fujikake was appointed Associate Professor at Tokyo Kasei Gakuin University in 2004 and Professor at Yokohama National University in 2012, and has since been actively engaged in both education and research. As a researcher, she has conducted extensive cultural anthropological fieldwork in Paraguay and published numerous academic papers and books on such topics as the empowerment of rural women and the lives of people living in urban slum communities. She has also implemented projects aimed at improving the livelihoods and well-being of local communities. In addition, Dr. Fujikake established a non-profit organization through which she has contributed to expanding educational opportunities, including the construction of four schools in rural areas. She has also developed and led programs that bring Japanese university students to Paraguay, providing them with opportunities to learn both the theory and practice of international cooperation. Through these wide-ranging activities, Dr. Fujikake has made significant contributions to promoting friendship and mutual understanding between Japan and Paraguay, as well as to advancing international cooperation.

    Professor Dr.Yoko Fujikake of the Institute of Urban Innovation, who also serves as Dean of the College of Urban Sciences, received the Honor al Mérito (Medal of Merit) from Universidad Nihon Gakko in the Republic of Paraguay in recognition of her longstanding contributions to international academic cooperation and to improving the livelihoods of rural women in Paraguay. The award was officially conferred under Universidad Nihon Gakko’s Resolución Nº 27/2026 (Resolution No. 27/2026) and was presented at the university on September 1, 2026. For more than 30 years, Professor Fujikake has conducted fieldwork in Paraguay in the areas of cultural anthropology and gender studies, while also promoting practical international cooperation that brings the outcomes of research and education back to local communities. In particular, through projects* implemented under the Yokohama National University–JICA Grassroots Technical Cooperation Program, aimed at improving the livelihoods and promoting the empowerment of rural women in Paraguay, Professor Fujikake has collaborated with faculty members and experts from Universidad Nihon Gakko, the National University of Asunción, the National University of Caaguazú, and Yokohama National University. Working with rural women in communities including La Colmena and Coronel Oviedo, these initiatives have included activities related to food processing, marketing, business management, and agritourism. The award recognizes the long-term impact of these efforts, which have contributed not only to expanding women’s economic opportunities, but also to their empowerment and to improvements in the well-being of their families.

    The 15th JICA President Award (2019) Professor Yoko Fujikake received the 15th JICA President Award in recognition of her more than 25 years of dedicated contributions to international cooperation. Her commitment began with her service as a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer (JOCV) in rural Paraguay, where she worked with women and children to improve their livelihoods. Since then, she has continued her engagement in international cooperation in various capacities, including as a JICA expert, a technical advisor to the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers, a university professor, and a representative of a nonprofit organization. Her sustained efforts have been particularly recognized for promoting livelihood improvement, income generation, women’s empowerment, and human resource development in rural communities, primarily in Paraguay, while integrating academic research and education with the practice of international cooperation.
