  Céline et Le Corbusier. Ils ont vécu la même époque ; la vie de l’écrivain de Voyage au bout de la nuit, né en 1894 et mort en 1961, se superpose à peu près sur celle de ce fameux représentant de l’ architecture moderniste, plus âgé de cinq ans. Évidemment, ce qui n’atteste aucunement qu’ils ont eu des contacts plus ou moins concrets ; il semble en effet qu’ils n’ont pas de points communs à ceci près qu’ils étaient contemporains. Or, par une curieuse coïncidence, Céline et Le Corbusier se trouvait au même endroit et au même moment : à Genève en 1926. L’un était là en tant qu’un Technical Officer de la Section d’hygiène de la Société des Nations depuis 1924 ; l’autre pour inspecter le terrain du nouveau siège de la SDN pour préparer le concours international. En plus, un autre écrivain se trouvait à Genève à cette même époque : Albert Cohen. Celui-ci travaillait à la division diplomatique du Bureau international du Travail, une autre organisation de la SDN. Cet article a pour but de mettre en relief, en partant de cette coïncidence, un fil inaperçu qui relierait surtout Céline et Le Corbusier. Ces deux artistes se rapprochent en effet autour de la question de l’américanisme. Tandis que Céline, qui n’était pas encore écrivain de Voyage au bout de la nuit, concevait vers cette époque la réforme de la médecine sociale, Le Corbusier poursuivait le renouvellement radical de l’architecture et de l’urbanisme. Et, dans leur recherche, la référence commune était justement un américanisme de Machine Age. Nous nous proposerons d’examiner ce rapprochement, surtout en analysant le décor d’un bureau de la Société des Nations décrit dans L’Église de Céline et le projet du Palais des Nations de Le Corbusier.

  ル・コルビュジエの蔵書には少なからぬ文学作品が含まれており、この建築家が文学にも親しんでいたことが分かる。本研究課題では、ル・コルビュジエ財団が所蔵しているこれらの蔵書のなかから文学作品を集中的に調査し、20世紀を代表するこの建築家・都市計画家が文学作品にどのような関心を寄せていたのか、またル・コルビュジエを経由することでこれらの文学作品のどのような読解の可能性が導き出されるのかを検討する。さらにこのような検討を通じて文学と都市という問題系に都市計画というこれまであまり前景化されてこなかったテーマを導入することで新たなアプローチの可能性を探る。

  本研究は、フランスの第三共和政期(1870-1940)を科学としての都市計画が確立され、やがてモダニズムの建築家がこれを発展させる時代と位置づけ、同時代の文学テクストと都市計画との関係を検討するものである。とりわけ本研究では第三共和政の後半期においてモダニズムの都市計画の確立に中心的役割をはたしたル・コルビュジエに注目し、ル・コルビュジエと関係のあった作家(ジロドゥー、サンドラールなど)、 あるいは同時代の都市を描いた作家(セリーヌなど)関連づけながら、黎明期の都市計画と文学テクストとの批評的関係を明らかにすることを目指す。

  エミール・ゾラはとりわけ19世紀後半のパリを描いたことで知られるが、晩年の作品『労 働』(1901)では理想都市建設の物語を語り、これが近代的都市計画の嚆矢とされる建築家 トニー・ガルニエの「工業都市」プラン(1918)に多大な影響を与える。ここでのゾラは、 文学テクストにおいていかに都市を捉えるかという問題を超えて、私たちに都市計画という 実践を強く意識させずにはおかない。本研究はこの事実を出発点とし、「都市と文学」とい う問題系に「都市計画」というテーマを導入することで、都市と文学との関わりに対する新 たなアプローチの可能性を検討する。より具体的には、エミール・ゾラの晩年のテクストを めぐって、1作家が描く都市、作家が構想する都市を分析するに際して「都市計画」という 観点を導入し、2同時代の都市計画との比較対照という方法論を用い、3文学テクストの持 つ批評的潜在性、あるいは創造的可能性を新たな角度から浮き彫りにすることを目指す。
