    This paper is to clarify the required intercultural competence of Japanese business persons working in overseas through the interview survey. The fundamental factors to successfully collaborate with foreign people are (1) cooperative and responsible attitudes in adjusting themselves among the cross-cultural situation and (2) knowledge of each of the countries such as history and culture. Based on these, the tasks are accomplished by using (3) expertise and experience in the required business field and (4) the practical job performance skills, i.e. the ability to develop mutual trust and the ability to think, discuss, and negotiate logically and critically. Through the collaboration process, (5) the language skills are used as the communication tool. Japanese often equate the language skills in English with the intercultural competence. However, the other factors are also crucial. Among then, the college level education has a compelling need for (1) and (4).

    The writer analyzed the qualities for interculturally competent Japanese business persons who work overseas in the previous article. This paper is to verify its validity and make more specific and multifaceted investigation into each of the requirements. The analysis of interviews supports the appropriateness of these requirements. It also shows the proper implementation of each differs depending on their roles, duties, counterparts, etc. In addition, the difference in the views of business operation between Japanese and foreigners causes various misunderstandings and missteps. It is necessary to grasp the facts of cross-cultural situations from two complementary points of view, i.e., macro-cultural features such as countries and ethnic groups, and micro features such as business culture and individual differences. In order to play an active role in the global society, Japanese should show their individualities while making use of their strengths, and contribute locally from a global standpoint.

    This paper aims to clarify the attitudes and behaviors of undergraduate students of a medium-sized university toward distance learning conducted in 2020, based on the academic institutional research (student IR) data collected through a series of surveys in which almost every student participated. The following are the major findings: 1) Students' preference for the "resumption of face-to-face learning" includes all of the campus life features, such as extracurricular activities. 2) The heavy burden of class assignments of distance learning, which many students pointed out, derives not only from the quantity but also from the lack of appropriate feedback. 3) Students find the ability to repeat the course at a convenient time and not having to commute to university are the main advantages of distance learning. The students who are highly autonomous might be able to take advantage of them. 4) As for the class implementation in the post-COVID period, a majority of students prefer to take the face-to-face sessions alongside with the remote classes, depending on the nature of the courses. 5) Significant differences in grades, attitudes and behaviors can be detected between the students who prefer face-to-face sessions and those who prefer remote learning. Being forced to participate in distance learning, whether students like it or not, has provided a good opportunity to reexamine the nature of university education.

    This is a practical report on an educational course aiming for intercultural communicative competence through domestic classroom lectures and activities. Each session is constructed by a combination of a lecture, a related case study and/or a workshop based on Kolb’s experiential learning model. This paper makes a specific and detailed description of the organization of the course and students’ reaction to it. The mean of Likert scale of student satisfaction with the course was significantly higher than that of the overall on-campus courses. Even if it did not contribute much to the direct exchange with foreigners, the students' concern in different cultures was sufficiently improved. The effect of learning has been enhanced by a well-balanced arrangement of academic lectures, practical case studies/story-telling and simulated work experiences.
