In recent years, public information has been disseminated using Yasashii Nihongo in various situations. On the other hand, changes in the norms and values of the Japanese language due to this movement have caused tensions and conflicts among native Japanese speakers. This paper focuses on such tensions and conflicts, clarifying how the values of “yasashisa (thoughtfulness)” are negotiated. Specifically, the paper analyzes narratives extracted from interviews conducted with Japanese students who engaged in collaborative workshops with international students in beginner-level Japanese. Based on the theory of situational boundary work and employing the concept of distantiation, the analysis elucidates two key aspects: 1) the definition of a boundary and 2) the relationship between boundaries and “yasashisa (thoughtfulness).” The analysis reveals that Yasashii Nihongo causes some sense of discomfort to native Japanese speakers. However, the interviewees’ subjective experience of discomfort varies, showing different types of boundaries elicited by various distantiation forms. Consequently, the meaning of “yasashisa (thoughtfulness)” assumes an entirely different form and, in certain instances, occupies a position of direct opposition. We can conclude from these results that the nature of “yasashisa (thoughtfulness)” in Yasashii Nihongo can significantly vary depending on the distancing practices that establish the boundaries, notwithstanding the uniformity of the language boundaries.

<p>This pragmatic case study examines the development of beliefs about language and language learning in Japanese teacher training. It addresses the challenges within multilingual classroom settings.</p><p>From 2020 to 2022, intercultural workshops were designed and implemented, drawing on the framework of “linguistically responsive teachers” (Lucas & Villegas, 2011). The main focus was on intercultural communication using “Yasashii Nihongo (plain Japanese/easy Japanese)” and nonverbal strategies. The participants were first-year teacher trainees and foreign students.</p><p>The surveys revealed significant shifts in students’ beliefs, particularly regarding the necessity for the correct use of Japanese and the role of students’ native languages in communication. However, a tendency to undervalue native languages also emerged, suggesting a tension between communicative success and sociolinguistic awareness.</p><p>Teacher education programs should carefully consider the integration of sociolinguistic perspectives into students’ native languages. In the long term, these programs should support the development of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) tailored to multilingual educational settings.</p>

Since the early 2010s, many people in Japan have played ARG-like games that blur the boundary between the game world and the real world. One of the most commercially successful examples is SCRAP's Real Escape Game, typically described as a game in which players, acting as “protagonists” of a particular “story,” attempt to escape by solving puzzles. Yet the precise role of “story” or “narrative” in these games remains ambiguous. This article examines how “narrative” functions as a tool of the trade in Real Escape Games, and in particular how high school students conceptualize and employ it when creating their own games. Drawing on Salen and Zimmerman's theoretical framework of games as narrative play, we first clarify the characteristics of “narratives” in Real Escape Games. We then conduct a text-mining analysis of the proposals submitted to the National High School Real Escape Game Creators Championship, in order to investigate how students position and utilize “narratives” in their original designs. The analysis reveals two key findings: (1) students create their games by adopting or appropriating the fixed “story events” of solving puzzles and escaping, and (2) they reinterpret everyday reality from the perspective of a “fictional world,” thereby identifying resources to construct the fictional settings of their games.
